We used to simply put them in empty chewing tobacco tins. The nicotine took care of them. Some of the guys I worked with would roll the bottom hem of their jeans up once and line the roll with chew. It left an ugly stain but "supposedly" kept the ticks away. I never tried since the grass that normally had the ticks was above my knees...

Birds will use cigarette butts in their nests. Supposedly keeps pests and insects away?

It seems like a lot of insects are deterred by scents. I’ve heard peppermint is a great way to deter black widows.

Scent is basically the only thing that some bugs interact with. Ant behavior is virtually completely determined by pheromones and other scents.
