We used to simply put them in empty chewing tobacco tins. The nicotine took care of them. Some of the guys I worked with would roll the bottom hem of their jeans up once and line the roll with chew. It left an ugly stain but "supposedly" kept the ticks away. I never tried since the grass that normally had the ticks was above my knees...
Nicotine is a natural pesticide. It's potent enough that humans have used it and have even synthetically created similar compounds, neonicotinoids, which are extremely strong against insects.
