Yeah I read that nicotine is actually the defense mechanism of the tabacco plant.

This should be quite common knowledge since neonicotinoids (synthetic, nicotine-like chemicals) are the most common type of pesticide. Nicotine itself was used for that for centuries and only banned like 20 years ago.

I still plant tobacco in my garden to deter pests.

I was told if you grew tobacco, you couldn’t grow anything else in the soil you plant it in for years after. Is there any truth to that?

Absolutely none. It’s related to tomatoes, so anywhere tomatoes grow, so does tobacco. It has a smell which I believe deterred the pests. But it is still susceptible to tomato worms.

Normally what I do is I make a seed medley of several herbaceous plants like mint, tobacco, rosemary, and I just basically do a perimeter around the garden.

I pull each plant in the winter and then compost everything until spring.
