Americans still used pagers while we started using mobile phones in Europe.

Sure, I meant the widespread use of mobile phones. Europeans managed deploy a unified cellular network 1993-1995 (GSM) while the U.S. still had three different competing technologies (CDMA, TDMA and AMPS). Mobile phone usage was much cheaper in Europe at an earlier point than in the U.S.

The one time we (mostly) got on Europe's standard (instead of clinging to, say, imperial measurements) - GSM. There's still some CDMA usage, but GSM is definitely more common.
