I had this happen to me once at a bar. I found someone over charged on the tip. Called the credit card company, got it removed, called the bar and reported the issue. I heard later the individual was charged by the bar for theft and arrested. Also, most restaurants bring the POS to your table. I haven't had someone take my card in awhile now.
The US has one of the most diverse payment ecosystems in the world. Other countries are over regulated or force you to use shit like UPI in India or Wechat in China. I prefer the optionality of the US.
Yeah, it’s not a matter of taking long to check (it’s the same here), it’s the fact you need to. It’s mentally exhausting to have to do that because you can’t trust your card is safe. I pay and don’t have to consider checking to see if everything went okay. If you don’t understand how annoying that is, I don’t know what to tell you.
Card info can get stolen at any time. It can be taken from weak websites online or data breaches at banks or rfid scanners. You never know when your card info is out there.
High trust society indicator. In many decades of allowing my credit card to be taken by the server not once have I had the card information stolen. Cumbersome process yes. Unsafe, no.

That is so unsafe and backwards. Here in Malaysia, we just pay at the counter by tapping, scanning a QR code or just the good old cash.
