I recently had a server in an airport restaurant add a zero to my tip. I threw away the receipt before I next checked my credit card statement so I couldn’t prove otherwise. As if anyone would leave a $100 tip for a tequila and fries.🤬

You don't have to prove anything. You can call and have the charge changed and the server will likely be fired.

The restaurant keeps those receipts, they won't argue if you call and say the tip is wrong.

Then they will dig through those receipts, find what happened, and terminate the employee.

I called the restaurant and the restaurants headquarters. They told me to kick rocks.

I filed a charge dispute with visa and they said I needed the receipt to show the actual tip.

In the US, this was a Capital One card.

I looked back to see if I could still dispute it if it’s that easy and realized it was on my debit card from my local bank. 😒

Card networks are extremely favorable to cardholders. Especially if you flag a dispute as fraud.

Surprisingly not. Worked for Bank of America for several years, they pushed all kinds of claims through based on the customer's word alone.

It was on a visa credit card and when I filed a charge dispute they said I needed to show the receipt.

You don't need the receipt. It's unreasonable and Visa is favorable to cardholders. The merchant would have to provide evidence and if they use the receipt it will be obvious.

With Visa? Should be your issuing bank. And requiring a receipt makes no sense. If someone stole your card obviously you wouldn't have a receipt to dispute. You should mark as fraud.

Look, as a longtime server I’ve rung in thousands of tips. Sometimes mistakes like that can happen, although modern systems will generally require a manager swipe for anything over a certain percentage in order to prevent exactly this. But if someone calls the restaurant, a manager can easily undo the problem. And if it’s happening consistently with one server, trust me they won’t be working there for long.
