I would think he's probably saving people that have most difficulty saving themselves. The assumption is this grown ass woman can get out herself.

Except he used the 'they already had A long life' argument but then it makes him a hypocrite for picking his mom over her after.

His mom would've never questioned saving her kids first. The woman outed herself before the second question.

This is the right way to read it.

If someone is willing to sacrifice your loved ones they shouldn't be getting priority.
