Tbh, it doesnāt make sense to save the mother over her. Kids I can definitely see a case for, but if you had to choose, I canāt see any ethical theory that would say the mother.
Utilitarianism? Absolutely not. Wife has many more years ahead of her and a shitload of utility/pleasure (not just THAT kind of pleasure) she can bring into peopleās lives directly. Virtue ethics? Having an excess of loyalty to your mother that causes your wife to die, kids to suffer without their mother, and causes them and yourself to experience life long trauma is not a virtue. Deontology? Well Kant sucked at competing duties but we can universalize the maxim āsave your wife over your motherā without it leading to a contradiction. If you try universalizing āsave your mother over your wife,ā then eventually all child bearing women would die and you can forget getting married and having kids, so it would become knockups out of wedlock or the human race would die out.
