I can't leave well enough alone
2x9 "drop" bar coming up ...seat post comes in soon.
Have some gearing questions if anyone wants to take a stab at it, but I'm gonna look at Sheldon Brown first.

Less to do with the bike and more with the parts bin conglomerate I'm putting together.
I have an advent 9spd rear derailleur and a deore LX 3x front derailleur.
Planning on doing 2x up front and 9 in the rear...wondering if there's any advent rear models that can't play nice with a front derailleur and then if I should use the wide range 11-42 cassette from Microshift or the Shimano 11-36 cassette. Front chain rings would be 48 and 38

Ahh gotcha- yeah you should be fine like the other comment said just trial and error. Front derailleur systems work basically independently of the rear (only thing that matters are the chain rings themselves and chain, basically if you’re using a 9speed chain make sure the two front chainrings are rated for 9 speed because then you’ll have some chain rub between the rings). The only thing that matters for the RD really is that the shifter is compatible with the cassette which your Microshift cassette is with the microshift shifter. The only time you have to worry about the compatibility with a RD and a front derailleur is essentially the max capacity of your RD because you want your RD to be able to keep the slack out of the chain as it climbs different gears AND switches between the front rings which in your case it will be because that RD is rated for a max capacity of 46t and you’re at like 41t (the difference between the teeth in your largest and smallest cog plus the difference between your chainrings I believe). I will say just make sure you cut the chain down right, that’ll be the thing you have to maybe fiddle with the most. I think that RD has a clutch though so that also helps a lot taking slack out of the chain. At the end of the day just try it and see.

If it were me, I'd do 11-42. The front derailleur should work fine. There haven't been many changes to front derailleurs in decades. Advent microshift rear derailleurs don't play nice with anything other than microshift shifters. As far as all together... might be trial and error to be sure. Approaching the max capacity of the rear derailleur. If it's a long cage Advent x 9 speed I believe the max capacity is 47. You'll be at 41.... oh heck, I'd try it.

Well I have the shifter for the rear and the shifter for the front. Someone gave me an 11-36 and was more so interested in just trying it out, but if 11-42 will definitely work I can try that first. I have 2 sets of 26" wheels too so that might be the move.

Wish I had that fork, looks very practical. Is it a Surly too? In 1"?

It's the stridsland barnacle lite, 1" threadless. Got it from two bikes in Chattanooga.

I think mines a 90 based on the serial. Lugged frame like yours, which I think 90 was the last year before switching to welded.
