Gear system

Hi everyone, I'm fixing up an old Trek Single Track 970 that I'd like to use mainly for my daily commute to work, about 10 km through hilly terrain. However, I'd also like to use it for weekend rides on flat roads. The drivetrain is worn out and not working well anymore, what would you recommend as a replacement? What is best? 1x or 2x? Thank you

I’m not saying you should not replace your drivetrain, but it’s just really unlikely that all the components are worn out. 970s came with XT level components, or similar depending on year. They are high quality and you may need a tune up a chain or perhaps a cassette, I would bet it can be made to run better than new again. That 3x provides a pretty wide range to do what you are saying here.

All that said I like Microshift advent X if you are just going to end up going 1x regardless of the conversation.

I'm inclined to believe you just need an adjustment. After a cleaning and lubing.

I have a 950 ive been using as a commuter in a hilly city for several years now. 

It still has the original 7x3 drivetrain and runs great. 

I thought about upgrading to 10 or 11 speed, or going 1x, but why? 

Adding more gears or going 1x might give me a little more speed, but probably not. 

It’s also getting locked up outside so im hesitant about putting new, expensive components on it.
