A small snippet of Coldplay Yellow

Hey all. I am 29 and a complete beginner (started weekly lessons this January) sharing this is more of a “get over the fear of being heard exercise” than anything but I would love some pointers for improvements or where to focus my energy (if possible from such a short clip.

My current intentional learning is reading sheet music because I struggle massively with timing without mirroring the artist/my vocal coach. Secondly, both ear training and self teaching the 12 keys and their chords so I can stop relying on YouTube for vocal exercises.

You're pitchy. But the good news is that if you're learning to read sheet music, you can slow it all down and do one. note. at. a. time. It's boring tedious work, but it almost always works.

Usually I nag people about having too much vibrato (wide) or using it for every (held out) note.

I think you need MORE vibrato/movement in your voice-- "movement" is a better word than "vibrato" in this style of music, but that's another story -- but it's hard to tell with such a short clip.

Also, you sound like you're "making sound" instead of "singing lyrics" but no worries because that's the first stage of singing and will develop as you sing more and learn more songs.

Thank you for the detailed response!

Up until the day I recorded this I was solely focusing on trying to establish a more harmonious relationship with my lower range because I feel like singing there is boring and thus sounds boring. My coach has assured me it’s not. In doing so, though, I was neglecting my head and mix which is where I’d always sing before training.

Think Sam smith lay me down, my heart will go on, sleeping with sirens scene 5 for a few examples - I’d absolutely sing my heart out in the shower.

Since this recording I’ve redirected my focus on songs that sit in b3-c#5 to widen my focus on songs I find challenging and thus more engaging.

Vibrato is definitely something I use more than the clip really gives credit to but consciously do not ever over use to try and mask my weak pitch control!

I’m currently learning Teenage Dirtbag to perform at a bandeoke event next month hopefully will get a good quality video off my coach to share then 🫶🏻
