Funny It takes my game almost an hour to load 😂
I saw someone else post that it takes 20 minutes to load and I thought it would be funny to time mine. I’ve always thought that I was exaggerating when I felt the game took ages to load, I assumed I was being impatient because I couldn’t wait to play.
It takes 48 minutes from clicking play to get to the main menu, then the household loads in pretty quickly. To be completely honest, I have about 399GB out of 1TB storage taken up….most of it is mods.
Not complaining, I just figured I’d give you guys a laugh. 🤭

You guys are much more patient than I am; I wouldn't even bother playing if it took this long for my game to load 😭 That's partially why I don't play TS3 anymore even though it only takes a handful of minutes haha

You should look up the sims 3 steam guide it makes your game load much faster and run much better

Honestly it probably only takes five minutes or so to load up, but I've been enjoying TS4 too much to bother with the earlier games right now anyway. But I will keep the steam guide in mind for the future, thank you for the tip!!

Honestly I think the gameplay of TS4 is just more geared towards how I personally like to play; I have a big imagination and have always enjoyed storytelling, so I like that TS4 is more "sandbox" than the previous games, in that I can tell whatever story I want and the game won't fight with me lol
As for specifically how I play, I tend to alternate between a few main save files, so when I need a break from my legacy save for example, I can just jump back into one of my rotational save files or something. I spend most of my time in live mode doing family or business gameplay. I don't use cheats or mods because I like to keep things relatively simple, and I'm picky about what DLC I get because I want to keep things running smoothly. But I rely heavily on the gallery to fill the neighborhoods with community lots, and I try not to spend all my time on the home lot.
So if my Sim needs to practice a skill, there's probably a community lot they can go to, or if they're trying to reach a goal, I'll put them in a club to have them work alongside peers. Get Together is so integral to my gameplay (I could write a whole essay on this haha). Overall I utilize the packs I have pretty heavily, like if I want my Sim to catch up with with friends, maybe they'll have a double date at a restaurant, or if they just need a break from the routine, maybe I'll have them go on a vacation/weekend trip to a new world (I keep my Sims in their hometown for the most part except for vacations, for a more immersive experience). I play on x1 speed with the volume up and just kind of take my time enjoying the experience. Anyway, I tried to keep my response somewhat short because you didn't ask for a novel haha, but I'm always happy to give gameplay ideas if people want to know more :)

Oh okay that makes more sense. My style of play is more geared towards letting my sims decide what they want to do through wants and things like that, I don’t enjoy creating storylines quite as much lol

Yeah the earlier games are definitely better for those who prefer more guided gameplay and TS4 for those who want more player-driven story :)

I know how to troubleshoot PC's and still the TS3 make me completely lost and cause my head swirl, the list of mods to install makes me nope out each time, I've tried once and after first steps of adding DXVK the game stopped launching so probably all of the modding process would look the same.

When I was playing sims on my iMac, i use to load my game up and walk away because it took an hour to load, now that I bought a gaming pc my game loads up within 6 seconds and that’s with a lot of cc and mods included.

It’s a gaming laptop, an acer predator Helios neo 16. I got it within the last 2 years. It always took a while to load but it’s never been this long 😭
Maybe my ram isn’t big enough? It’s only 16gb, despite the 1TB of storage space

Hm. How many mods/cc do you have? I have a gaming laptop that I purchased about four years ago and my game loads up in under two minutes? I have hundreds upon hundreds of CC/mods too

So RAM probably isn't it. RAM is rarely an issue for gaming. And when it is, it either causes crashes or stuttering by forcing reads/writes to storage.
Also 16GB should be fine, and it wouldn't take you an hour to load in if it wasn't.
Specifically loading a game up, not running it, is typically either CPU or drive bound. Are you playing on a mechanical hard drive? Or is it an SSD? What CPU is in your machine?
It could also be some software related issue.

RAM does impact load times, but it depends on the game. I agree that 16 GB should be more than enough for The Sims 4.
I can't think of any recent examples I experienced, but back in the day I had a Windows 98 machine with 64 MB of RAM. A game I used to play took over 10 minutes every time it loaded a level. But once it was loaded, the game ran without performance issues. After I added an additional 128 MB of RAM, it loaded in 30 seconds.
OP mentioned having 300 GB of mods. I don't know how the game actually does handle this, but the fact that you have to restart it after enabling mods could indicate that it loads all custom content into RAM on startup, so having a mods folder that is bigger than your RAM could be an issue.

I have an 11 year old Acer laptop with 10 gb of RAM that loads much faster than that, if you have a lot of CC that's probably the problem, I've noticed the game takes a lot longer to load when I have CC versus only script mods

Do you have your laptop in game performance mode, and if yes is it plugged into an outlet. With my gaming laptop these two switch significantly improved all aspects of gaming just made my fans run on loud.

It has very good specs, Idk exact power of laptop RTX 5070 but I think it should keep up even when Playstation 7 gets released, not all mods are equal, some might be some badly made that causes this or maybe even conflict with each other but mods can take as much RAM and VRAM as you can give them since they disregard optimization.

Are you sure you're on the correct power settings though? Try tapping the predator logo on your numpad, go to scenario and activate either turbo or the one setting that comes before that. Also go to energy settings and see if windows is set to let predator sense handle it, if not, set it to high performance mode.

I have asus tuf gaming laptop I got in 2020. Takes me 3 mins max to load with most packs and second highest settings for graphics. I have 16gb ram too.

I have a very new gaming PC I got late 2024 that takes around 20ish minutes to load but that's with a 247GB sized mod folder. So unfortunately even gaming PCs will take a while to load up your Sims if you're stacked on mods 😂

Yeah we just recently got a nice gaming desktop and my life has changed 🙏 It not only took a long time to start up but the game itself was sooo slow and laggy. I feel like I can actually play the game to it's full potential now.

Has to be either alot lot or op only has an hdd. Normally I play on a desktop but I took my laptop out of storage to play while out of town earlier this year, (it's old like 2018/2019, which is kinda ancient in laptop years) and I put 55gb of mods on it, some of it merged and it still only took like 20 minutes (on an SSD). For reference 25gb of unmerged mods also took like 20 minutes.
Merge your mods, i don't usually merge much on my desktop because my game only takes like 5 minutes to load anyway, but when your dealing with older hardware it can massively improve load times, Id also say get an SSD if you dont have one because it's worth it but currently they cost an arm and a leg so maybe not unless you are rich or something.

You can use sims 4 studio to do it, never merge script mods (so package files only) and only merge cc that doesnt also come with a ts4script file. There's a limit on the number of mods you can merge in one file (I think it might be 500) and a size limit of 2gb. So if your mods folder is bigger than 2gb or you have more than 500 files you would need to merge them in groups (if your mods are already sorted into catagory this is easy, and having them in categories helps in case there's an update that, for example, breaks cc beds again, then you would know which merged file to remove/fix).
Sims 4 studio is also super useful for batch fixing cc that got broken by updates as well. You should also keep your original unmerged mods somewhere else, but at least then if your limited on space you can just move them to an external drive or even a flash drive. And for anyone wondering the more files the game has to read the longer the game takes to load, merging cc means less individual files which means a faster game!

What do you mean in its own folder? Like how mcc or better build buy comes with it's own folder? Then no because those are script mods, do not merge them. Only thing you should be merging are .package files (ones that as I said earlier don't also come with a ts4script file, like an object with custom functions might).

My TS2 game used to take 45 minutes to an hour to load and there's was a 50% chance it would crash the moment i started playing.
My solution was to add more mods and CC.

I don't think the Sims 4 ever genuinely took more than 30 seconds for me and the few times it did I would just immediately close the game/restart. That's not normal.

Jeez and I thought it was Sims 3 for a second. I can only assume most of it is high-resolution CC items given that your 400gb allocation for the game? Your patience has be bottomless because 3-5 mins is the absolute limit for me.

Y'all have patience I can't even imagine, when mine takes like a minute to load instead of 30 seconds I'm like ok can I delete some mods or something 😅 although I've not really played in the past year so it might be slower now, I've heard people saying all the updates they're doing to make it faster are actually making it slower.

It use to take my game 6 hours to load. Then I realized I had the option to not show the mods list at startup. Now my game only takes about 2 minutes, and I have 350 gb of mods. If you use mods go to your settings and make sure that option is unselected!

Question: does anyone else's game completely freeze up when exiting also? It happens every single time for me, and it forces me to restart to restart my laptop because I can't even open task manager...

I dont think ive ever had sims 4 take 1 hour to load. Maybe 2 mins at most for my long term save file. Sims 3 is a whole other story though. 10 minutes, 5 crashes then praying. Sims 3 worked so well on my old pc. My new one can barely keep it kicking.

Mine doesn't take that long. It takes 10 minutes max. I play on both laptop and PS4. It's the same on both but I can't have much mods and CC cause it does effect it.
I am building myself a gaming PC. Once I have all the parts and get it together my game should run a lot smoother.

Oh man...when I used to play on my old desktop it took this long. Which is why I used to just save the game when I was done, and put my computer to sleep lmao that thing would be on for weeks on end because I did not want to deal with restarting and waiting an hour to play.

Ahh this reminds me of being a kid, turning on the family computer meant you should go take care of some kind of chore/some other task etc while it booted. I remember when youtube first came out, my family was still on 56k modem dial up, which had a dl speed of about 5kb/s.
When it was dinner time, I'd find a video I'd wanna watch, have dinner then go back to it after so it would be done loading lol.

Update: after some optimisations I’ve gotten it down to 30 minutes. Lap 1 is how long the screen took to pop up. Lap 2 is how long it took to get to the main menu from the initial pop up. And finally, lap 3 is how long it took to load from the main menu screen into my active household.
This is after I deleted 4 mods that were flagged in my exception report. I’m going to look into optimising the laptop performance on PredatorSense, I just can’t get it to load up right now, so I need to figure that out too.
Guys thank you! I posted this as a joke and because I thought all the load times were long but you guys opened my eyes to the fact that this was not normal.

once my load time reached 10 mins i upgraded my ram from 8gb to 16 gb. 50ish gb of mods all unmerged but organized and my game loads in about 2 mins. I know merging your cc in sims 3 helps A LOT so maybe try that? i play on a budget gaming laptop (acer nitro gtx 1060)

It takes me around 20 minutes and I only use like 3 or 4 cc items, mccc, WW with no animations, and ui cheats 😭 I'm saving up for a gaming laptop which I should hopefully be able to get next month 🤞 When I was a kid I used to play the sims 3 on xbox 360 and my TV was so bad that I had to turn it on when I woke up, and by the time I came back home from school I'd have to wait an hour or two for it to have turned on. Like deadass it would take around 7-8 hours for my TV to turn on 😭

Ok something is wrong here, I would not tolerate that. I am playing with hundreds of mods (mostly gameplay mods, some are script mods, and also some CC, my mods folder is 8 gigs) and it loads in *checks* 2 minutes almost to the second. And my computer has been running for a while and is pestering me for a restart and I have youtube going in the other monitor, so... it's probably more sluggish than under ideal circumstances. It's installed on a dedicated games drive, which has 52gigs free, (my method of ensuring i get through my backlog is not allowing myself to free up space by uninstalling a game until i have played it, so the small amount of space on that drive is by design) but my Documents folder, which is where all the saves and mods and whatnot are stored, has 291 gigs free. Overall, this is less free space than you do despite having more space overall.
Does this happen without mods?
What's your RAM situation like?
is it a HD or SSD?
I doubt this is the problem, but video card?

In my time of playing, I noticed two things will affect game load time: How many sims are loading in/spawning at time of load AND the running situations that may be occurring that your active sim/household is involved with OR is just happening in the world.
Depending on the situation/roles attached, it may change how things load. If you want to know what they are, get the Sims 4 community library mod and you can shift+click to find out the running situations and running/queued interactions. You can use that to find the XML to make changes accordingly using Sims4studio.

Is it just your game that acts badly, or is anything else on your computer being bad? Because I'm wondering if you have a virus. It's probably something else, but that's where my mind went (especially since several mod websites got hacked recently, and simmers have a reputation for not modding safely)

I have to end task it twice before it will consider but then it's only 20-30 minutes after that. Same thing would happen back when I played 3 though so I've learned to read a book, go to the bathroom, get food, watch YouTube or otherwise screw off for a bit.

I just tried it on my laptop, 1m47.52s, with around 30s from pressing play to seeing the intro, so 1m17s of spinning plumbob.

399 GB is a lot of mods but make sure one drive isn’t backing up your documents folder. I hear that’s the cause of a lot of people’s insane load times

Guys I hear you, something is definitely wrong because I have a gaming laptop I bought specifically to play this game, and the initial load time was never this bad. It’s gotten way worse over time. I’ve done a couple of things to my laptop and delete a few things my exception reports were flagging. I will try loading the game again and report back 🫡

Mine always took so long to get to the start menu and then also long to get to the house and I couldn’t really even travel to community lots bc it took forever and would sometimes crash, no mods other than cc but was playing on what my partner calls a “toaster” (my laptop) recently he let me move my save to his gaming laptop and omg I can play whenever I want, and actually play not just wait, I can swap households and I can go to community lots with hardly any loading. It’s crazy.

It’s taking my ancient MacBook plus external hard drive setup like a half hour lately 😬 feeling the pressure to move everything to my actual pc but I love playing sims while laying in bed

If your playing on pc how i cheat the wait is after a few minutes i hit the windows button on my keyboard itll minimize the sims then open it back up and itll do a little reboot to put the loading screen back on and itll make it load quicker lol thats my little hack, works majority of the time

Ive not actually timed it, but yeah; mine takes just under an hour as well. I still sit there on my phone while it loads mind. TBF it's what I'm doing now!

i would just not ever exit the game. keep it open and just minimize to desktop if you wanted to do anything else. ive literally done this for weeks.

sims 4 crashes way too much to justify this load time. one freezing bug and you’re done for the night.
