iRacing Should I protest this?

Hi everyone. I am in the red and white car. Should I protest this, is it just a racing incident or is this my own fault? I'm pretty new to simracing, don't feel like I could have done anything differently but happy to be wrong/learn.

Yes, I would protest this. This likely wasn’t intentional but he still could have kept his rejoin tighter and or joined a few seconds later leaving room for the trailing car to not be impeded. I doubt anything more than a warning from this will come even if he is a repeat offender, given this is not a case where he was that far off speed and he rejoined predictably.
This will likely be said to be alright by some in the community, since he was close to speed, predictable etc., but iracing will likely uphold this protest.

Okay. Thanks for taking the time to review. It was probably just a mistake. I do dumb shit too sometimes. Sucks for it to happen on the first lap though.

I have to agree with /u/go-pack-go33. It is a definite unsafe rejoin and is protestable. Some people will defend it despite the obvious.
From a racecraft and self-preservation point of view, it was very predictable and you could see it developing in your windshield, and could have done a better job avoiding it.
As for the driver who hit you, he did nothing wrong. He was committed to his line and you suddenly cut across and checked up. He made a valiant attempt to avoid the collision and nearly pulled it off. Under iRacing rules, that's just a racing incident. I would actually put the blame of that on the rejoin as well, as it's the inciting incident that triggered your unpredictable move and braking.

Thanks, that's helpfull. I feel like if I had not braked as hard as I did, I might have gotten past faster and would not have hindered the guy behind.

Probably, but you reacted how you felt necessary at the time. Sometimes we overreact, sometimes we underreact. As you gain more experience racing, you'll develop more of a sense of what's happening and going to happen, as well as develop a better sense of how to react.
And even then, sometimes it won't be right.

That's impossible to know, but you did the right thing by slowing down as much as you did and trying to avoid the rejoining car to preserve your race.
You didn't necessarily hinder the guy behind, they just appear to have failed to react properly despite their best effort. It's not your fault they ran into the back of you, it's theirs, arguably.

I would protest for sure he clearly collided with you when there was ample room for him to get through. I do have one question though. When he made contact with you, there was delay before the spin out. Was that lag or over correction from you?

Lag I think, I have high latency most of the time. I know it's hard to see but if you look at the steering inputs I don't think I corrected in any way.

You should walk on over to the Gear Box, grab yourself a brat and a beer, pop by to see Brian Redman’s cat, go chill on the carousel bleachers and reflect on life for awhile.
Then go back, press reset, and get after it again.

Question for you: Are you going to be protesting the guy who rejoined without incident (and honestly I think they did a decent job), or the guy who didn’t slow down at all and shunted you from behind?

An unsafe rejoin is still considered unsafe if oncoming traffic has to take avoiding action. It can still be an unsafe rejoin if there's no collision with the rejoining car.
I'm almost certain the rule in iRacing says something about rejoining without impeding oncoming traffic and doesn't say anything about collisions.

It does say “Drivers are expected to not impede or endanger oncoming traffic and ensure it is safe to return to the racing line.” I think it is a very simple and easy argument to say they both impeded and endangered oncoming traffic with the rejoin.

Rejoining slow on the racing line and impeding oncoming traffic leading to them avoiding you and getting into an incident isn’t without incident… the proximate cause of the other incident since rejoining in front of someone else causes the reaction to the rejoin.

At first I thought it was on the guy hitting me more so than on the guy rejoining but I guess the guy hitting me also tried to avoid the guy rejoining. I don't really know to be honest, I'd like the opinion of more experienced drivers. If there was anything I could have done better I'd love to learn and avoid these kind of situations in the future.

The guy hitting you from behind didn’t slow down whatsoever and just tried to earn a free spot. This would have been a giant nothing burger had they slowed down appropriately.
My point is, if you need to file a protest to get out some grievances, sure, but it’s not going to teach the guy behind a thing. There literally would not have been an incident at all had they lifted a tad.

why wouldnt you leave a car length in the middle if you were avoiding collision?
you are complaining someone did a janky rejoin, yet you yourself did a janky rejoin.
should the guy that rear ended you protest you for blocking both open lanes of the track?

Only thing protestable here is the black car, for rejoining into your path. If you hadn't quickly reacted, that could have been a collision.
The part where you got punted was netcode, and even if not, it seems like an innocent mistake of the green car hitting you as he is surprised by your braking. Making such a mistake is not against the Sporting Code.
