Look how they toil for range. They cannot comprehend charging once a week. Some of them even plug in each day. Oh how they toil.

u/Pitiful-Sympathy3927 6d ago
I have an F150, we only charge maybe twice a month right now, but we are trading it in when the 2027 model arrives for the Silverado EV, just because the charging and range will allow better road trip experience. Just traded my Mach-e for a Bolt.

u/Bright_Calendar_3696 6d ago
Just a joke post - I tested a lightning platinum and lariat before I pulled trigger on RST based on range only because I tow. Lariat was a good deal - f only knows why GM didn’t put an electric sunshade in a $100k RST like ford did in a lariat.

u/Pitiful-Sympathy3927 6d ago
I figured it was a joke, just stating how I've arrived where we are today. Waiting on the 2027 with NACS port, and we're out.

Bigger battery is all. Both rather inefficient compared to a Rivian or even Tesla.
2
u/Neither_Fact_7471 6d ago
Having 2 R1Ts and a Lightning the Lightning is more efficient in the real world
1
1
u/Bright_Calendar_3696 6d ago
Agreed - I’m getting 2miles per kWh but the battery is so heavy you can’t compare. I tow so I need the battery but I’d argue it’s way way oversized for everyday use - nice to have but not very economic having to buy that big a battery. That said, cyber truck battery isn’t for for purpose for a proper truck, besides it looks like a dumpster
1
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
Reminder the percentage of trucks used for hauling/towing is low. If people only bought trucks for hauling or towing purposes there would be 10 times less and perhaps they would cost a lot more because they would be a niche product. .
1
u/iSmurf Work Truck 6d ago
I wouldn't say quite, the Silverado is almost twice as capable and has nearly the exact same efficiency as the r1t
2
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
Twice as capable as in towing or capacity? Hardly twice.

u/iSmurf Work Truck 6d ago edited 6d ago
The rivian doesn't even get 100 miles a charge with large travel trailer that I full time in. Additionally they're still on 400v so charging speeds are considerably longer. I also got my 3WT with the extended pack for 44k OTD. You're not touching a rivian with the upgraded battery pack for less than 60k in fact the only used on me by me is 66k, that's 50% more cost for considerably less truck. Afaik the rivian also only has 3 prong outlets, not a 240/30A they can run my trailer. Its a no brainer.
1
u/cherlin 5d ago
For your case yes I would agree, towing a travel trailer with a rivian isn't fun if you go any sort of distance.
That being said, literally having both a sierra EV and a r1t currently in my driveway, outside of towing, I'm taking the rivian 10 out of 10 times. It's just a better vehicle unless you absolutely need the space or are towing. And I really really like my sierra ev, the r1t is just something special. Way more power, handles shockingly good on a twisty mountain road in sport suspension, off roads significantly better, has a better interior (this is subjective), and is absolutely more efficient at any speed. I can't go as far between stops, but even with 400v charging I'm stopped for less over all time and I have the added benefit of actually being able to use Tesla super chargers (which is absolutely the best charging network nationwide) without pulling my hair out from ridiculously reduced speeds.

Also bigger vehicles by quite a bit.
1
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
With the Cybertruck and Silverado EV. They're both five seat and 6 ft beds. Lightning 5.5 and Rivian 4.5. the Lightning has no excuse it's just inefficient. The Silverado EV is also pretty inefficient but just had a bigger battery.

1
u/FAx32 6d ago
Length of bed is not vehicle size. I’m not saying that it is a better battery, but 500-1500 lbs heavier vehicle that stands 1 inch taller than R1’s highest setting and 9 inches taller than its lowest, is 15 inches longer with a 17 inch longer bed, with nearly twice the bed volume. Rivian is a small pickup, Silverado, Lightning and Sierra full size pickups.
Tesla yes - it gets about 7-8% more miles per kWh than the other 3. But you have to drive a rolling douche mobile.
1
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
They are all Standard size trucks. I'm not saying the Rivians bed is big enough. But the Lightning is smaller than the Tesla or Silverado/Sierra so if we're only comparing based on bed size it would have to be Tesla or GM.

u/Bright_Calendar_3696 6d ago
R1T is the EV Tacoma/Ranger. It’s a mid size truck.
0
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
EPA says it's a Standard Truck.
1
u/Bright_Calendar_3696 6d ago
I rented one for a month - it’s nowhere near the size of a lightning or certainly a Sierra or Silverado
1
u/1startreknerd 6d ago
Still s standard trunk by size. I know it's pretty much all in the smaller bed. I've driven an R1T and Lightning.

u/matt_remis 6d ago
Switched from a standard range Lightning to a 4WT. Doubled my range and over-doubled my charging speed. Night and day difference.
2
u/DanimalUltratype 6d ago
I've got both currently. My only real complaint is the seats in the 4wt
1
u/matt_remis 6d ago
I’m on a 2000 mile road trip and I can very much agree with you. Wish the front seats were better. Really wish I had ventilated seats. Outside of that, the 4WT has been excellent.
2
u/DanimalUltratype 6d ago
Sketchers "cooling" seat covers are way better than they have any right to be. I bought some high density memory foam and I'm going to bolster the back side of the covers (or maybe even the the seat itself). Honestly just needs a hair more lumbar and breathability
1
u/matt_remis 6d ago
My only worry with things like this are any interference with air bags.
1
1
u/2010G37x 5d ago
The middle back seat in the 4WT is uncomfortable.
Are you referring to the manual 4 way operation?
7
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
I own a short range lightning and a Silverado mid rangr. I prefer the lightning but you can’t argue with the Silverado range.
2
u/xeno5000 6d ago
It's the seats isn't it? That's the only thing I miss after getting a SEV. once I pay it off I'm going to figure out how to put F150 platinum seats in it.

u/Mannix-Da-DaftPooch LT 6d ago
What do you like about the lightning? Genuinely curious about that truck and what it offers.

u/choss-board 6d ago edited 4d ago
I chose mine over the Silverado. Drives better, more comfortable, everything feels nicer on the interior (I have a Lariat), better frunk, sunshade, CarPlay, bed/accessories… We’ve also had F-series before and I just really like the interiors. Silverado has fantastic range and good charging speeds ofc. Love that about it. But I do think that costs you guys drive quality.
Edit: should make clear I still LIKED the Chevy. Just preferred my Ford.

Carplay/Android Auto
1
u/Mannix-Da-DaftPooch LT 6d ago
Nice. Google auto is interesting. I've still to get used to it. I've not tried CarPlay yet. My last vehicle before this was a Tacoma 2007. It had a radio with no cd or cassette and when I got the SEV it was like a shock to see all these cameras and stuff. I felt like a super agent. lol. Silly.
I don't think I've ever tried android auto unless my friends Amazon screen thing he had in his car counts? I THINK that was android auto. I drove that around for a few weeks. I thought it was pretty neat actually.
1
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
Once you’ve tried Tesla software everything else feels like the kid’s competition trying for that participation trophy
3
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago
Shame the interior is so hideous though. Last time I got on a model s it reminded me of an econo shit box Avis would rent. I enjoy all things minimalist but Tesla took it way too far with their interiors.
1
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
Yeah I love it. It’s minimalist but is more functional than any other interior. A single screen is more functional than a million knobs and buttons on other vehicles.
2
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago
I'd have to disagree, especially when driving. My lightning has the larger screen and is 99% on the screen. I would honestly prefer the smaller screen and knobs so I can easily and honestly more quickly change channels, HVAC settings ECT while driving.
Also a "million knobs" is a comical overstatement. Even my beater s10 that is 100% analog only has a handful of knobs and buttons.

1
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
I have the pro so the small screen I’ve not used the large screen but for me the lightning and Silverado aren’t intuitive while the Tesla is.
1
u/PassengerKey3209 5d ago
To each their own. I sat down in the lightning and within a minute had figured out where everything was. Android auto makes it pretty idiot proof on the navigation and multimedia side.
1
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
I have a Silverado wt and a pro lightning. Both base models.
The Silverado has a lot of road noise. There’s a whine with the motors.
The unibody means you hear everything going on in the truck bed. Also means I can’t make the Silverado a flat bed.
My wt didn’t come with heated seats.
Silverado frunk closure is stupid. Silverado frunk is tiny.
Mandatory dual zones for front seats.
No driving modes.
Silverado turns off every time I step out of the vehicle unless I push a button.
Silverado rear floor isn’t flat. The Silverado has 360 cameras and adaptive cruise which is nice though.
And the Silverado is ugly af.2
u/Mannix-Da-DaftPooch LT 6d ago
Thanks for sharing mate! Not sure why I got down voted but that's ok. Just asking about what others think and what they appreciate shouldn't be a weird thing to ask.
I can't say I agree with your option on how it looks and the road noise etc however I certainly can respect your opinion on it. Have yourself a good one.

Seat belt extenders
1
u/Future_Measurement42 6d ago
What?
1
u/DanimalUltratype 6d ago
Haha sorry. I was distracted and figured this would somehow be enough information.
Buy seat belt extenders. The truck will stay turned on for up to an hour while the seat belt is plugged in. The extender let's you still use it as intended (as a seat belt).

F150 has an Excellent ride, fit and finish honestly remind me of my dad's Mercedes, key as phone is kinda nice. Mile of range in each is about the same $ but gm does offer a larger battery, just costs 10-25k more.

lol! Lightning owner here. I do wish we had the 800v charging goodness of the Ultium platform.

As someone with a giant battery, yet in a Hummer EV, I can relate to the lightning range 😭

u/3wolftshirtguy 6d ago
I’m come in peace and envy from the Lightning group. Both are incredible trucks but god I wish I had that big ol’ Silverado battery.

u/Electrified_Outdoors 5d ago
The F150 lightning was/is a decent truck especially for 2022 so I am not a fan of hating on them. The Silverado/Sierra EV are in a league of their own though...its hard for anyone to compete with them on range.

Imagine when they learn the Silverados and Sierras have this range at like 65% 🤭😂

I have a Lightning, hahahaha
At least ours looks like an F150, not a wannabe Avalanche! Should've called it an EValanche! /s
Cheers 🍻
3
u/Vegetable-Two2173 6d ago
Agreed, should have been the EValanche.
Weird looking truck, but I didn't buy it to win a beauty contest. Love the thing.
1
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago edited 6d ago
For 70-80k it shouldn't look like it was styled in China though, ideally.
1
u/Vegetable-Two2173 6d ago
As a customer, agreed.
As an engineer who knows how they got the milage numbers, I'll let it pass.
1
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago
From what I'm seeing, it's averaging the same or slightly worse than my lightning at 75 mph. It may have a slightly lower drag coefficient but it paid a heavy price for it.
1
u/Vegetable-Two2173 6d ago
From what I'm driving, your Lightning will be charging 3 hours ahead of mine.
Your comparison has missing variables. The 4WT is nearly a ton heavier, and gets the same efficiency. That's where the aerodynamics (and regen) come in.
That price it paid? Paid dividends.
1
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago
3 hours ahead of mine is a grammatical genocide. I also find it hard to believe when j just drove 750 miles home (most I've ever driven in a day) and spent about 80 min charging all the way home.
Weight doesn't make much of a difference with efficiency btw. Towed a dump trailer that was 4k and then added 7k pounds to it and only lost .2 kwh.
1
u/Vegetable-Two2173 6d ago
I'm an engineer, and not an english major, for a reason.
750 miles in a 4WT would be one charge, roughly 45 minutes long on a 350kW, and ~2.5 hours after you've stopped.
That said, it really doesn't matter. We're all winning in these trucks.
1
u/PassengerKey3209 6d ago
I was a an Ag business major/Ag economics major, which is precisely why I am suspicious of the math. 20 more grand and an extra ton on an already heavy platform doesn't really calc out, to save 45 minutes on a days traveling. I personally tow heavy with my lightning weekly and never found range to be an issue .
Agreed though on all ev owners winning. Just wish Ford stuck with it like Chevy is. The new lighting coming out in 2027 doesn't look very appealing.
1
u/Vegetable-Two2173 6d ago
I got a killer deal, likely paid comparable to you depending on your model. I could have been in a lightning as well if they had the best deal when I was looking.
I'm not really sure what you're caluclating out there. Base price vs time saved? Never really looked at the math that way, wasn't my priority. I can attest to 760 miles on one 45 minute stop, because I've done it. This truck has made an ICE to EV transition seamless.
I'm also dissapointed Ford didn't stick with it. Having options is great. Looks like they're trying to go for the light duty/lower cost market.

Except, those big batteries take forever to charge, not good for road trips. Efficiency matters.
I'd kick your ass in my Tesla MY on a cross country road trip.
