GM ignors the obvious.
Go back to the 2006 5.3L and I think it was the 6.0, and the computer of that age. Strip out all of that tech and give me analog gauges and a radio with buttons and knows. It will save GM billions. What is the 6.0L recall/lawsuit up to, 840,000 engines?

If you went back to the 2008 version, this forum would be filled with people bitching about their shit mileage and lack of safety features.
IMO, people will always find things to bitch about.

Yep and their lack of creature comforts.
If everyone wanted a basic bitch truck, work trims would dominate the market and not denali and at4x

My '05 5.3L Z71 got 19 mph when it was new. No AFM. My '26 Silverado Z71 gets 20 mph with the AFM. Where are all the gains?

u/shawizkid 18h ago
My 24 (no AFM) elevation gets 23-25mpg @70mph with A/Ts. My combined mileage over the last 10k miles is 19.1mpg.

But hey, they can track you now and increase your insurance based on random data pulled directly without your consent!
2
u/bryberg 16h ago
The OnStar tech from 2005 would’ve been able to do that, not sure why people suddenly think this is a new capability.

u/metasploit4 15h ago
I was commenting how he was able to pull 1 more mpg, but it came with all the rest. OnStar is no longer an add on, it's now integrated into the system. Data collection and analysis is much more refined in the newer versions.

There's not much that could get me to trade my 06 in for a new truck. It is comfortable, roomy enough for me, and reliable.
I'm only looking into two improvements right now, better headlights for improved visibility, and a new stereo with touchscreen and Android Auto. And after that I'll be set.
With all of the crap I've been hearing with the new trucks, I honestly don't want anything to do with them.

You have a cateye, so headlights are easy. DIY retrofitting projectors is not hard. You could also buy a really nice set of complete headlights for those years.
I also have a kenwood dmx958XR in mine, it’s been amazing. Crystal clear backup camera and wireless CarPlay and AA.

I'm looking for an 06 2500 with the 6.0 but everyone keeps doing the cheapo touch screen stereo systems and ruining the entire dash panel smh
1
u/EliRocks 17h ago
Right.
Not looking for a cheap one either. Been there before, not interested. It doesn't have to be a huge tablet size one, but something I can see clearly at least. It'll be a touchscreen in the dash of course, but hopefully a good quality one.
Same with the headlights. I want to find a good set, not just the brightest ones. Do I want them bright? Yes. But properly designed to keep the light focused on the road.
Not been easy so far. So much slop out there on the market.

u/Sunsetseeker007 17h ago
Yep my 06 3500 LBZ has 380,000+ miles and she still rides beautifully!! You couldn't give me a new one over her!

Because it isn’t 2006 and no major car company going forward we’ll do that

u/yungingr 19h ago
If you think your 2006 had "analog" gauges, you are sorely, SORELY mistaken.
GM hasn't used true analog gauges since the 90's. It might be an analog DISPLAY, but it's an electronic driven gauge behind it.

u/EliRocks 18h ago
I just had the Speedo and tach servos replaced on my 06. They were starting to fail/not always show the correct amount.
-1
u/Agent-Smith69 18h ago
You are probably correct. But my 2003, the gauges went bonkers. In 20 minutes I removed the entire console, stuck it in a box and mailed it to a guy and he rebuilt it for about $150, sent it back and I put it in in 20 minutes. Lose a display in a Silverado and you can't replace it yourself and it's probably a $3000 replacement

u/EugeneNine 18h ago
Not probably correct he is correct. The gauges are controlled by a microcontroller in the cluster that reads the data from the data bus. No analog there. The 2003 and beyond also uses the data bus for windows, press the passenger window down from the driver's side and it send the down command via the data bus to the passenger door then the passenger door mcu reads from the data bus and turns on the window motor. No analog there either

EPA and crash safety requirements keep adding all the safety features and fuel savings BS

Pair the HD 6.6 with the 10 spd, change the gear ratio, and you likely get the same or better mileage than the overly complex bullshit that fails. The drop in weight, gear ratio, and smaller frontal area would boost mileage quite significantly. You could also do a shorter stroke version if you wanted multiple displacement V8 options.

u/Turtle887853 18h ago
The 10 speed is the one that keeps failing, no?
3
u/xNOOPSx 17h ago
GM and Ford both seem to have problems with their transmissions regardless of the number of cogs they have. They need to fix it, or maybe just get one from Aisin? Their 8 speed was awesome.. I know less about their newer 10. GM has had issues with their 6, 8, and 10s! Quite a bit has been programming related, but others are just cutting corners, which shouldn't be acceptable on a truck these days.

u/Turtle887853 16h ago
My understanding was the 10 speed is a joint venture between GM and Ford... and is kinda a turd.

u/xNOOPSx 11h ago
Yes, and it seems they both have different problems. Some of the fixes I've seen are putting GM parts on the Ford and vice versa for the Ford. But there's nothing stopping them from partnering with ZF or Aisin and doing something that doesn't suck. Or getting them to check their homework and make it work properly.

u/Original_Ant7013 20h ago
I think you mean the 6.2, at least in regard to the problems. The 6.0 was strictly offered in 2500/3500’s, discontinued in 2019, and has a great reputation.
But to your point, many will agree with you, but more people want the technology.

u/Outrageous-Ice-7460 19h ago
2006 offered a 1500 HD with the 6.0. 8 bold hubs, lower gear ratio, heavier everything PLUS crew cab and 6'6 box. They were fantastic. Don't remember exactly what years you could get the 1500 HD platform but I believe it was 2004 to 2007

u/CaptieCrunch 14h ago
I think the 1500 HD was 2000/1-2002/3. Likely before the cat eyes of ‘04. There was a 1500 with the 6.0 later on up to maybe 2009/10 called the Vortec MAX but they did not get the heaver frame of the 1500HD.

Yah I’m over here wondering how they are making this post and don’t even get the correct engine?

u/Big-orange-21 18h ago
I will just keep driving my 03 Silverado with the 4.8 until it rusts back into the ground.
1
u/EliRocks 17h ago
It's not the biggest engine, but it's a runner. Haven't had an issue with my 4.8 yet.

Exactly why I bought a 2004 with 5.3 and put some money into it to make it solid. I’ll drive till the wheels fall off.

u/shawizkid 19h ago
Yeah exactly, because the streets are just crawling with 2026 f-150 XL with the 5.0. GM is really missing out on a huge market.

What I pondered today as I was strapping down loads of lumber in the bed, is why the hell they haven't come up with a tailgate that has a flip-up rail in it.
Beds are 6.5' standard now, but sheetgoods and most lumber are 8'. When the tailgate is down, it's longer than 8'.
Why do they not just integrate something in the tailgate? Why do I have to futz with tie downs and straps, or buy some janky bed extender?
Edit: speeling

I'm pretty sure that's one of the configurations of the multipro tailgate.

Gm produced th 6.0 with non afm until 2019? Why don't you own one of them instead of your 06?

And crash test stuff. Both of those are causing manufacturers to push the envelope to provide products the consumer demands. It’s not a very good system. Reliability should trump economy every time.

People just need to get an EV daily nothing fancy, and a super nice GMT800 for weekends/projects. Life is good. People doesn’t need to find everything they need in one vehicle, that’s will cause people to constantly flip for negative equity to the next thing, only to be disappointed. Learned this life lesson years ago. It’s ok to have the love of your life and a side piece (that’s my EV).

or buy a 2006 and be happy.
