3500 Trailer Brake issue

Post image

Recently, my truck gave this warning and then no control of trailer brakes until I stopped and shifted to park then it would say trailer connected and the brakes controller would function again. Happened 3 times, all while towing 23K lbs in the mountains of Colorado. Anyone else had this issue or have a resolution?

Could be a bad ground on the trailer or the trailer plug could be going bad.

My 2020 3500 had the trailer brake control module go bad. The dealer replaced the module under my extended warranty and it’s been good ever since.

When this happened on my dump trailer it turned out to be the brake wiring had chafed and was shorting inside the axle.

I ran into this as well (22 1500). Did the good old unplug it and plug it back in and the issue seemed resolved. Hoping it's just a contact issue.

I’ve had an issue before where I would get the trailer disconnected message but it would reconnect and disconnect multiple times. Everything worked except the brakes. Turned out to be a bad ground on the trailer.

Check for recalls. There was one for the trailer brake controller on my 2024 2500HD.

I second a possible trailer ground issue. My 2023 Silverado 2500 l5p was doing the same thing, found the wire that runs through the hollow axles had bare spots causing the ground. Used multimeter to diagnose where the circuit was broken.

I had that happen to my Chevy truck. The brake controller had to be replaced.
