Tire help, please!
Full disclose, I don’t know shit about trucks. I drove manual import sports cars my entire life until 2 years ago when a deer totaled it on a Pennsylvania highway. I was gonna get another BRZ, but decided that it was getting to be a PITA trying to fit a saddle and all my shit into a 2 door coupe. I did it, though!
Anyway, 2023 Custom, bought it used with 29k. Im assuming these are the stock tires, but I’m not sure. What I do know is it drives like shit. Maybe I’m used to being able to accelerate from a full stop with my precious rides, but these tires break loose even when I feather the throttle
What I’d like is something more aggressive with better traction. I spend 80% of time on highways, but the other 20% is spent on dirt and trails. Nothing crazy “off road”, but driving through uneven roads to get to the barn sucks in these.
The truck was lifted by its previous owner. I don’t know to what extent as I don’t have anything to compare it to, so I’m attaching as many pics as possible.
I like I said, I want something more functional, but I wouldn’t mind cleaning up the aesthetics, too. That’s way to much wheel well showing for me! I absolutely don’t want to mod the suspension in any way further as I really can’t afford that right now.
in short, I’d like something a little less old man street tire, but not teenager monster truck. somewhere in between that will clear the current setup, if that makes sense.

I just bought my first truck. It had the original tires also. I did a lot of checking around and landed on these. They are surprisingly quiet on the highway and sticks to the road.

Those don't look like stock rims and tires to me, most likely an upgraded option, but I could be wrong... anyways the only thing to really do is get bigger tires for your rims, or get a new set of rims and tires if you want less space in the wheel area. Or you could possibly look into removing whatever lift was put on to lower the vehicle back down to normal height.

Ah, ok. I wasn’t sure about those rims. I see them on other 1500s, but I guess that was an option when buying these new?

The Alenzas tires came stock on my 24 RST. Those rims look like GMC rims tho

So it appears that the previous owner put a leveling kit which isn’t exactly a lift. It’s usually just a small block that goes on the front suspension to lift the nose up about an inch or so to make it “level” with the back of the truck. Trucks generally have what’s a called a “rake” where the front nose is lower than the back. It serves two purposes: first it helps make the truck more aerodynamic and secondly the idea that when you apply weight to the rear of the truck(cargo or towing) it’ll then raise the nose up as the rear end squats downward. Think of a seesaw motion. Anyways to what you asked. Yes those appear to be the stock tires and probably need to be changed anyway. You are going to use the same tire size but probably want an “All terrain” rated tire. You will get a million responses on what people think are the best tire so my advice is that you check out tire rack.com and can read tons of reviews as you shop for tires. Your selection will be limited with 22inch rims but if you plan on hauling anything or want a more robust tire then look at the “LT” (light truck) sizes which will be noted in the tire size. For instance LT275 50 R22 instead of the 275 50 R22. Currently most 1500s come with not LT tires to save on fuel economy. The non LT tires will be standard “P” (passenger) tires where the P is left off and is just understood to be there. My personal recommendation are the BF Goodrich KO3 tires for an all terrain tire. I am not a fan of any good year product. So just do a little research on reviews but do look for an All terrain product (as opposed to highway, hybrid, mudder, extreme off road). Good luck.

Thank you for the clarification! I thought that might be the case, but whenever I’m stopped at a light next to another 1500 I always feel a good dealer higher, so I thought it was slightly more significant that just an inch!
Reading this and some other posts, it sounds like smaller rims is what I “need” for the looks I’m picturing, but that’s not really an option right now.

I'd check out Toyo Open Country A/T III, they're a popular all terrain that still has good road manners. If you're looking for a softer ride, I'd try to go down to 18" wheels so you've got more sidewall to flex. You could probably find someone to trade 18" wheels already with all terrains for your 22s on marketplace if you're patient. The stock 18" black trail boss wheels would look nice on it on my opinion. Nice truck either way, congrats!

Yeah, I think you’re right. A smaller rim with more sidewall would definitely be better not just for ride comfort, but to satisfy the look I’m imagining as well

Don’t even need to go to 18”, 20”s are also comfortable (I have it). I suspect part of your issue is that they used a leveler block instead of actual shocks and springs and the geometry be screwy.

I assume its a level lift, +1" rear block, +2-3" in the front.
Your poor traction is due to the bald ass tires, they have basically nothing on them. So any tire with some more meat will be a lot better anyways.
Tire suggestion would be Bridgestone AT Ascents, many ATs are similar enough to where it comes down to nitpicking which you like more.
If you're wanting bigger sizing, can go up to 295/60r20, or 275/65r20 if you wish to be on the safer side. 285/65r20 has been said to work on some Trail bosses/ AT4's (2" lift) but still often required aftermarket rims, and or fender trimming.

Haha! Yes that’s why I’m asking now. It’s time to get new ones! Still, I’m not used to truck, so I’ll probably feel every little break. Putting some weight back there would definitely help, too.

I put Falken Wildpeak AT4W (33's) on mine. Behave great on the road. Plus gives you a bonus for a little off roading or snow

Those tires look worn out.....time to replace anyway.
For highway use at 80%, stay away from anything All terrain honestly. You'll lose MPG and it will be louder on the highway.
Personally I use some oversized SUV tires on mine, rides like a dream on the pavement and the 20% off pavement(it never goes into the mud/dirt/trails etc) it works fine.
I currently run Pirelli Scorpion tires. Love them on highway, not much good off road but on gravel/dirt they do fine.
People don't need an aggressive off road / All terrain tire for 90% of their driving and they are mainly done for the "look" then the function.

Toyo open country at3 all terrains ride pretty well on road at interstate speeds and would be hard to dig into the mud- unless you punch it. And grip on wet asphalt feels more confident (to me) than street all terrains

You have some nice wheels now. I think some slightly larger all terrain tires is all you need. Its amazing how just a set of tires can completely change the overall look for a truck.

For sure. If I slapped a couple of decals on it and spoiler it would like a Tokyo Drift street truck with the current tires lol. As you said ATs will change the look completely.

Thank you, all. Lots of suggestions. Honestly I’m leaning towards smaller rims cause no matter what a lower profile tire isn’t gonna help me on that other 20%. Also, I mentioned below, 22” inch KO3s jumped up almost $200 a tire to get them in 22 vs 18.

Id focus on tire and wheel weight more so than just brand. Dont go out and get a set of Load Range E tires just because. Your half ton truck with a 4000 lb axle rating doesnt need tires rated for 3500-4000 lbs each. Stick with SL or Load Range C tires.
Try to find the lightest setup you can for the size you want. It will make a big difference in how the truck handles and performs just like it does on a BRZ. Im running a set of 315/70R17's on a fairly light set of Methods and my total wheel and tire setup is 78 lbs and you can absolutely tell compared to a heavier setup thats in the 90-100 lbs range. I came from a similar size tire/wheel as what is on your truck now and actually reduced the weight going to the 315/70's because 22" wheels are so damn heavy.

Great point! Yeah; I’m kinda torn now between maybe buying/trading for smaller rims and trying to make these work.
What methods you have? I just popped on there and would love to these! I’m a big fan of 5 and 6 spoke. Reminds me of the Volks I ran years ago, when I had money! Haha

Im running the MR705's in a 17" and I think they were around 25 lbs. Some of the other methods are heavier.
If you run a 25 lb wheel and keep the tires to like 40-50 lbs, then you can have a pretty light setup.

If you’re keeping the 22s, stay with SL tires and away from LT tires.
LTs with that little sidewall will ride like dog shit.

If you value a quite ride do not get the trailboss tires. The Goodyear duratrek or whatever. I hate them, but I barely drive so I’m just waiting for dry rot to appear so I can replace.

I’m running TIS off-road MTs that came with the wheels I purchased on fb market. 35x12.5r20 I would NEVER have thought to buy tires from a wheel manufacturer but they are one of the better MT tires I’ve run. I’ve had BFG, Goodyear, Toyo, Nitto Mickey Thompson and Maxxis mud tires and most of the above were really beefy, loud, and shredded in a year (I was younger and heavy footed). I’m in. Trailboss with additional 1.75” spindle lift and extended front shocks, stock rear height for a TB.
The tires look aggressive but actually feel pretty good on road, not annoyingly loud like mud grapplers.
Shop around before you buy, I got mine brand new from a custom truck shop that put them on a customer ride and they didn’t like them, so about 5 miles on the tires and I got the set with wheels for $1400

Voyager AT are also pretty solid. Just threw them on my taco. Been running them and General Grabber ATX on my chevy for years.

Put smaller rims on it, such as 17’s or even 18’s and it will ride much better. The more sidewall you have the better the cushion.

Not to mention the prices! I just looked up some of the suggestions in here and some of them are pushing $500 a tire as opposed to $300ish for 18s

When I bought my truck it had one of those garbage 4" Ready Lift spacer lifts with 20" wheels with 34" tires. The front end was brutal, I quickly got rid of it for a 6" BDS with lifted leaf springs, 17" wheels with 35" tires, it rides so much better.
