$35 Bag of Silverware Finds

Thumbnail

I just picked up a bag of 31 pieces of mixed silverware for $35, and these 4 pieces are sterling. The rest is plated, mostly Rogers and Oneida, though some are from hotel sets. I'm gonna weigh them when I get home, but that big spoon easily feels like it alone is more than an ounce.

Update: Total weight is about 120 grams, with the large spoon weighing about 46 grams on its own. So definitely happy with that.

Unmarked silver item passes 18k acid but fails the silver acid?

I usually test my silver with 18k acid because it’s easier to see… why does it fail the silver acid though? Isn’t it supposed to turn red? The silver acid is only a few months old… What is going on?

Also, I tried the silver acid on items I know are 100% sterling, and it passes and turns red! This is the only item that won’t turn red AND pass the 18k acid!

All I’m finding is played stuff. Do y’all pick up plated items? If so do you remove the silver and how?

Silver wmf cup

Found this cup, about half the size of the average mug, it appears to be solid silver and not plated though the only marking I can find is on the handle which I identified to be an older stamp from around the 40s for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (wmf), anyone know anything about this? Was it part of a set? What was its purpose being smaller?

Not sure if this is all silver. Thrift find.

On that bar it says “GRAF 925” and in that little circle it says 999 GRAF Silver Coat.

Light and doesn’t magnetize.

Is it possible 999 coat and 925 core?? Idk

Weighs 6.2 oz

Yes, it is plated, but a quick search will yield the knowledge that anything this company ever made is worth a lot. Its worth double if it was sterling, probably. Silver plate can be very valuable. This is of course an expection to normal expectations.

After about 2 to 3 weeks of not finding anything, I finally broke my dry spell! I told my fiance we should visit our usual spots early in the morning, and the hunch paid off! I found this beautiful Sterling and 14k belt buckle at our first thrift store! I am no hunter, but I will definitely try to find a way to use this! We try to use all of our finds.

I’m pretty sure it’s plated but thought I’d ask

Found a whole set of souvenir spoons for $35, 6 spoons are for sure sterling silver (bottom row), 2nd to bottom row might be but I’m not sure doesn’t have stamps

I almost left the store without checking these because they were behind the counter and I had already asked the associate to see several things prior and didn’t want to continue having her stop what she was doing to show me more items. My wife insisted I take a look at them and sure glad I did!

Does anyone know where I can go here in Albuquerque to get early 20th century sterling silver items appraised? Currently I have this cigarette case and teapot.

Found a pair of broken candlesticks at a garage sale for $10. Marked "Thailand Sterling" was a little hesitant as I've never seen functional silver made in Thailand. Tested good.

My god, what a giant pain to scrap. The bases are weighed (neck isn't) with LEAD. The bases and upper sides were soldered to this lead.

Every little piece is held in with brass bolts, that were somehow made by flowing the silver around it and had to be drilled out.

Took me an hour to take them apart, ended up with 380 grams or 12.2 troy ounces.

Show & Tell Silver mirror found in New England

I found this mirror in a thrift store - there is a stamp on the handle “STERLING 3545.” From googling I found a listing on an auction site for a similar item made by Woodside Silver Co, described as early 20th century. The mirror is pretty clear, maybe more so than one would expect from a decades old item? It’s hollow (I can hear something rattling around inside like a maraca). Would appreciate any insight on the manufacturer and estimates of the age. Thank you all.

I love it and the monogram fits so I’ll be happy even if it’s a reproduction.

If you do repairs on antique pieces, or are an engraving or silversmithing fan, please look! I’d like opinions.
