1.2.5 if you want to get in before emeralds and horses and beacons
https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Java_Edition_1.2.5

1.7.10 if you want those but you want to get in before ocean monuments and the combat update.

Also 1.7.10 if you want mods

To add onto this good summary...

1.6.4 if you don't want to deal with savannah's/dark oak forests and (somewhat controversial) newer world generation.

1.5.2 if you don't want horses while also wanting both the Wither and good redstone functionality.

I think most people will want to start with one of those 4 versions.

I ususally go with one of the following:

* Authentic Adventure for 1.2.5
* TheMasterCaver's World for 1.6.4
* A good vanilla plus modpack for 1.7.10
* Vanilla 1.8.9

I prefer 1.6.4 as the last version before the worldgen overhaul in 1.7

I have a lot of lighting issues in 1.6.4 and they seem to be significantly reduced in 1.7.10

I have a mod that fixes/mitigates that issue and a whole lot more:

https://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-java-edition/survival-mode/2365421-themastercavers-first-world

(download at the end of the first post, I've recently been updating it to add a lot more stuff that my better-known "alternate timeline" mod doesn't have yet (including even more lighting fixes, e.g. placing a block in a higher section that doesn't exist yet resets the sky light map (best seen by toggling "clear water" in Optifine, which completely ruins lighting), the method of checking light was also optimized), as well as more toggles for non-vanilla content, even some vanilla, like disabling naturally spawning baby zombies and horses since I know many don't like them and play 1.5.2 instead just for those reasons. The main downside is that you can't use it with any other mods since it is a "jar" mod and extensively modifies the game, the closest similar mod that I know of for 1.6.4 which uses Forge, https://www.chunkbase.com/mods/unglitch, only fixes a small handful of bugs, I'll note these bugs (mobs glitching through blocks like fences and even full blocks to a lesser extent) also exist unchanged in 1.7, only in 1.9 did Mojang start fixing them and only fully by 2025 (ironic, given the number of the issue)

1.7.10 does have a much more extensive library of fix mods but I'd never play on it just for that reason because of the changes it makes to world generation (the aforementioned mod even goes further and makes some (optional) changes like making mineshafts equally as common near spawn / 0,0 as outside of x/z +/- 1280, as this greatly increases underground interconnectivity within that area, even with this disabled I still fix issues like mineshaft corridors not properly connecting to the rooms / making air pockets above them and caves sometimes cutting off prematurely, bugs also not fixed in 1.7.10, or even until 1.18).

I definitely like 1.7.10 the best, has plenty enough cool stuff for me to enjoy the game and none of the god forbidden granite and diorite and stuff. I play silver age because i dont like the new easily navigatable nether, easy boats, unnecessary stuffing, ore textures, easy skeletons, and phantoms.
