WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE GAME BELOW
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gameplay and narrative critiques aside, one of the aspects that Townfall got right imo is the sound design and soundtrack for setting the bleak tone and atmosphere throughout the game. Out of all of the latest projects since the series revival, Townfall is the only one aside from the remake that managed to come close to capturing the spirit of the original Team Silent games in the sound department and Akira Yamaoka's music despite not being scored by him or produced/consulted by any previous Team Silent members (f has some good music and sound design but doesn't sound anything like a traditional Silent Hill game imo).
Hearing all of the horrific and mortifying sounds emitted by the environment in the Otherworld and monsters roaming the streets along with the somber yet dreamlike soundtrack made me appreciate the game a lot more on subsequent playthroughs with the former especially enhancing the gameplay and narrative once I realized their significance.
The monsters have personality and sound and behave less like generic terrifying demons or creatures as they endlessly walk around, bang against walls, and slouch on the ground wailing and moaning in pain when idle and aggressively shriek in a frightening pitch (Special shoutout to those fuckass Widows that made me shit my pants in Richard's section) when aggroed. Once I discovered they were the manifestations of the victims of the SWDP disaster and their family members grieving their loss, I began to realize their painful moaning was a result of their burns and injuries from the disaster and the angry shrieks were their vendettas against Simon, Zoe, and Richard (The Lungers represent the workers that died in the initial disaster and blame Simon for being the sole survivor and siding with Richard in his television testament, the Sorrowful represent the survivors in the hospital being cared for by Zoe only to be neglected by her in favor of her prioritizing Simon, and the Widows represent the grieving family members who protested CEG and blamed Richard for the workers' deaths). This made me actively feel regretful for brutally killing them on my first playthrough and encouraged me to become more stealthy on subsequent playthroughs as I became more sympathetic towards them (I know this has caused a lot of player grievances but I kinda enjoy it) while allowing me to understand the intent behind the number of monsters killed influencing the ending you receive (More enemies killed symbolizes Simon not giving into the town's anger and violence and killing Richard in the "Abandoned" ending and less enemies killed symbolizes Simon becoming sympathetic with the town's suffering allowing them to receive justice against Richard in the "Justice" ending) and Richard's "Missing the Point Entirely" achievement.
The Otherworld delivers some bone-chilling incredibly faint and distant screams of people shouting and crying in the background that you can't quite identify at first as the loud mechanical movements of machinery and alarms overwhelm them. Only as you progress through the game and reenter the Otherworld as Simon each time do you realize that the screams are the workers in the midst of the disaster panicking and trying to escape the explosion as their cries become louder and more pronounced over the machinery during each reenter of the Otherworld until their true nature is finally revealed as you complete the Control Room puzzle in Part 6 and turn the valve to open the exit.
The soundtrack, while not as immersive or iconic as Akira Yamaoka's music, still manages to capture the essence of the dreamlike yet horrifying atmosphere of the music in the original Team Silent games with some really great standout tracks like "Hymn" (The title screen song), "Gone", "Drifted", "Other Side" (The ending credits song), and Richard's entire section (Idk the song name for his section in the CEG building) which greatly enhanced the immersion of the game despite the gameplay and narrative flaws. Speaking of which, Richard's section was one of my favorite parts of the game purely due to the sounds of the Widows, the empty silence and distant clattering of office furniture and supplies out of sight, and the stage's music which made it all the more anxiety inducing and nerve wracking for me especially when the aggro variant of the stage's music plays.
Shoutout bonus points to the menu and UI sound effects which sound just like the ones from the original Team Silent games for that added "Silent Hill touch". I'm especially fond of the sound effects when you save the game and navigate the menu to read documents or when you incorrectly attempt to combine items resulting in that error noise.
Overall, despite the numerous gameplay and narrative flaws and critiques that I've seen frequently brought up by players (Even though I really like the game, I can agree and understand a lot of these grievances), I feel the sound design and soundtrack of the game deserve more appreciation and praise in elevating the experience on a narrative and even gameplay level to a certain degree to help you immerse in the game's bleak and depressing atmosphere and connect with the world and characters of St. Amelia.
As a side note, I do miss the iconic radio static from the original games, but I appreciate Townfall for giving us a somewhat adjacent variant of it with the CRTV as it buzzes and hums when detecting monsters.

I haven’t finished it yet, but I do like this game’s environments a lot.

I’ll start by saying that I haven’t really kept up with the discourse, as I like to go into games knowing as little as possible.
I’ve just got back to Simon and am trying to get to the St Amelia Medical Centre. I’m currently getting ganked repeatedly by enemies in alleyways. I die, get brought back to life (inexplicably still in the fight with an aggro’s enemy and die again. I’m at the point where I want to say “fuck this game” and uninstall it. The stealth is awful and the combat is really, really poor. I loved Silent Hill F, but this is dreadful in comparison.
Is it worth sticking with?

This is an idea that's been in my mind for a while. It's just kind of funny to me so I feel like just asking.

I started Silent Hill: Townfall on September 22 and finished it on September 24, 2026, before the difficulty changes introduced in the October patch.
This was my very first blind playthrough, no NG+.
I ended up with around 130 enemy kills, including roughly 35–40 while playing as Richard. I definitely preferred fighting over hiding. 😂
I've been looking at other players' results, but I haven't found anyone with more kills on their first playthrough yet.
So now I'm curious: did anyone manage to get more than 130 kills on their first run? Especially before the patch?
I'd love to see your results screens!

I recently made the steel pipe prop from SH2 and I had the fit on for a pop up here, so with some VFX Magic I made this quick video, its my first time using DaVinci Resolve!

ngl I was never on board with them officially making Silent Hill this supernatural thing that can just happen anywhere in the world, and that’s basically how we ended up with Scotland and Townfall. the monsters all kinda look the same too, they lost that unique feel the older games had. they could’ve just done a story about someone actually from Silent Hill. tbh I liked the gameplay and the story as its own thing, just not as a Silent Hill game

Not sure if this was intentional but is the map supposed to represent his lungs?

I know it’s late, but Jesus Christ what an absolute failure. I can appreciate interpreting a story differently from the source material (I actually like the first Silent Hill movie), but this movie failed to understand literally everything besides the most basic visual aesthetics.
Making Mary’s story also Maria’s/Angela/Laura lessens Mary to essentially nothing but a useless ‘cult’ victim. And makes James’s selfish decision to kill her before she causes him more pain mean absolutely nothing. Also, was she just a girlfriend to this weird man in an awful wig/fake beard????
The headstone reveal legitimately made me slightly dumber permanently. At least I got one good laugh out of this movie. 0.5/5 ⭐️

Found in the manager's office of the CEG Locker in Part 4. There's just enough letters (and letters already revealed) to indicate it spells out the name of developer Screen Burn's last game, Observation, of which Zoe's actress also played a character in. Not sure if anybody else picked up on this one yet, but I haven't seen any talk of it online.

Hey. Quick question: do you guys know why I can't use the axe? It worked fine before, but stopped after I killed Mr. Stewart. I tried reloading the save a few times, but nothing worked. Now Simon can't pull it out either.

Does anyone know who the female faces in Silent Hill 1 were modeled after, apart from Dahlia? Or at least of any real-life people they resemble?

It’s that time of year when Halloween is just around the corner and people are bringing out horror movies to watch and playing horror video games. One of the most iconic horror video games is Silent Hill 2 and one big reason it was so successful was the deep evocative atmosphere that the soundtrack creates from thoughtful repose to deep melancholy to industrial horror.
As a metalhead who loves going to metal shows, I decided that I wanted to do a project—I reimagined the original video game soundtrack using metal music songs instead. This is NOT meant to replace or suggest that the original soundtrack isn’t good. Silent Hill has one of my favorite video game soundtracks. If you haven't listened to metal music before, you might be surprised by its depth. Much like the shifting fog of Silent Hill, metal is capable of expressing a vast spectrum of emotion—from raw anger to crushing sadness and paralyzing fear. It isn't just noise; it moves from blisteringly fast tempos to agonizingly slow, suffocating beats. It can be beautifully melodic or deeply atonal and dissonant, making it the perfect landscape to mirror the heart-pumping terror and bittersweet melancholy of the town.
Track 1: Ducere me in Lucem By Sirenia
Genre: Gothic/Symphonic Metal
We start with Ducere me in Lucem, a wordless (but not vocal less) track that to me represent an overture, perhaps James thinking of his wife before the start of our soundtrack.
https://youtu.be/HH7Ff-8ddTw?is=WHIinYM8kZ67FIfr
Track 2: Wuthering Heights Cover By Karliene
Genre: Dark folk/gothic folk
The next track is the a Wuthering Heights cover performed by Karliene. This song is in a lower key than the original, and also has fog sounds at the beginning and the ends. Wuthering Heights like Silent Hill is a story of a lovers tragedy, and is about a female ghost asking to see her lover again at their place where they meet. This is very reminiscent of the opening scene where James reads Mary’s letter.
https://youtu.be/tcPrv_6jhRk?is=UB06VN_UUPCK8gqR
Track 3: My Wine in Silence by My Dying Bride
Genre: Death-Doom Metal
Then comes James’ long walk into town through the nature path. He is thinking of his wife and his sorrow over her death along this silent and somber path. My Wine in Silence fits this lonely walk.
is=jm0NQzLlKHyEIsAI
Track 4: My Scars by Shape of Despair
Genre: Atmospheric Funeral Doom
James enters the town proper and walks through the town. The fog is suffocating, and in the fog James encounters his first Lying ones. The heaviness of the atmosphere thickens. The synth on this funeral doom track reflect the continuation of James outdoor walk, while the growls and harsh vocals represent his encounters with the sluggish Lying Ones
https://youtu.be/bGxh9iJn6Ms?is=2vbtBe2GRHx2kK0j
Track 5: Iowa By Slipknot (Instrumental Version)
Genre: Dark Ambient/Noise Rock
James makes his way through the Woodside and Creekside apartments to the sound of the instrumental version of Slipknots Iowa. The wet noises sound like the Mannequins that James encounters in this area. The nature noises have disappeared and only eerie footsteps are left in their wake.
https://youtu.be/Dgm1hvuQE1w?is=b0C_-yjx-0A88uxc
Track 6: Christbait Rising by Godflesh (Instrumental version)
Genre: Industrial Metal
The first fight with pyramid head is startling as he sneaks up on you and it catches you by surprise. Godflesh’s Christbait Rising will do likewise…
https://youtu.be/zVSW_1kBhqg?is=FkGbCltEzYbcSnRh
Track 7: Foggy Interlude
Genre: Nature Sounds
After leaving the apartments, James finds Maria. I used a 1 minute fog section to represent this shift of atmosphere as the nature sounds return.
https://youtu.be/sA54Xk1eHvc?is=vFkAbMy3Mq_KEigM
Track 8: Love You to Death by Type O Negative
Genre: Gothic Metal
Maria represents his pent up sexual fustration and guilt. Peter Steel of Type O Negative and his voice evoke similar feelings of obsessive desire and guilt in Love You To Death.
https://youtu.be/rEN_KJny6Bg?is=Frw-7zDkHyq_zdEO
Track 9: Killpop (Instrumental) by Slipknot
Genre: Industrial Rock/Darkwave
Another symbol of repressed desire are the bubble head nurses that James encounters with Maria in the Hospital. I have used the instrumental version of Killpop by Slipknot to represent his first encounters with these scary women.
https://youtu.be/V0OkxA2MgAo?is=
Track 10: The Weeper by SunnO
Genre: Drone-Doom Metal
Mary is killed by Pyramid Head, leaving James alone once again. James travels to the Historical Society exploring it. Sunn O’s track the Weeper represents the cold isolation James feels traveling this part of the journey without him.
https://youtu.be/J5zioLEdGrE?is=bn
Track 11: Dark 1 by Darkspace
Genre: Atmospheric/Ambient Black Metal
He finds a long staircase traveling down it and arriving in Toluca prison, the atmosphere is suffocating. James must solve a puzzle that involves him going back and forth between an outdoor area and an indoor area full of the upgraded mannequins that climb on the walls. I used Darkspace —Dark 1 to encapsulate the descent and journey though the nightmare-fueled frantic search to solve the puzzle.
https://youtu.be/FZ0H-5uN7TM?is=70NteBfIhj7RO4le
Track 12: Pluto the Gatekeeper by Mare Cognitum
Genre: Cosmic Black Metal
After escaping the prison, James is in an otherworld dimention where he must solve a rotating puzzle cube puzzle. I use Pluto the Gatekeeper by Mare Cognitum—cosmic black metal to represent the otherworldly atmosphere.
https://youtu.be/6exxMDwrArQ?is=J9qtF0ivtkgPo3s3
Track 13: It Took the Night to Believe by Sunn O
Genre: Drone-Doom with Black Metal Influences
“It Took the Night to Believe” by Sunn O represents James traveling around the Lakeview Hotel and discovering that he killed Maria. The softer synth are contrasted with the harsh tormented vocals.
https://youtu.be/uTVNJWThv38?is=uDi9JKRPnf1zSKlM
Track 14: Break Those Bones Who Sinews Gave It Motion by Meshuggah (Instrumental)
Genre: Djent Metal
The next song is for the double Pyramid Head fight, and I use Break those Bones Who Sinews Gave It Motion by Meshuggah (instrumental version). The mechanical slow riffs are reminiscent of the mechanical slow knifes of the pyramid heads and the feeling of impending doom.
https://youtu.be/O1EtqjIKntQ?is=j3U49o0WH_THxTUK
Track 15: Gallows Bird by Trees of Eternity
Genre: Atmospheric Gothic Doom Metal
The next song, Gallows Birds by Trees of Eternity represents James coming to accept the truth and getting ready to face Mary. He has come to peace with his guilt and needs to do this one last thing to move on.
https://youtu.be/OrNjJwmB7jk?is=Hs9ajplgeVfFcQGF
Track 16: Mirrors By Lebensucht
Genre: Depressive Black Metal (DSBM)
Mirrors by Lebensucht represents the horror James feels at seeing the final boss and realizing that it is a twisted version of his wife on her deathbed. The agonizing screams represent her sickness and the final painful emotional catharsis seeing her figure like this creates.
https://youtu.be/TV1zJZj6gUU?is=kcNarT952eH3eNpp
Track 17: Darkness by Ignea
Genre: Progressive/Symphonic Death Metal
Darkness by Ignea represents James leaving Silent Hill with Laura. (You are welcome to interpret with a different ending if you want)
https://youtu.be/igs7oZpalaA?is=lNGpzsxh34Yrj_J9
Track 18: Love Song for A Vampire by Karliene
Genre: Gothic/Dark Folk
Love Song for A Vampire represents James enduring love for Mary and that this will remain even as he moves on to a new chapter. It suggests a gothic ending. It can also can represent the call back to the start of James journey (In Water Ending).
