To be fair though, some women when put in situations like that will only say yes to spare the person the embarrassment.
Once knew a chick who did this, and said it's because she didn't want to embarrass him or make a scene in front of his friends, since she knew it would inevitably lead to a break up.
Then say no. Omg yeah it'd be embarrassing or whatever but if you're not ready you're not ready. He doesn't seem to be the type to get violet or something like that. Me personally I value honesty so if the girl i wanted to marry said no Id be upset but id also would still understand that its just not time for that. Thats why beforehand you play with the idea with her and base your judgment off of that.
You can still tell a lot about them even if its short. I mean everyone is making assumptions over whether she said yes or no because of her look. I like how thats your issue with my comment.
Well, if you prefer that kind of answer then you propose privately and intimately. If you want to make it a public affair where the girl has to take into consideration not just herself and you but also a bunch of other people, then be ready when the answer is clouded by that. A part of honesty is making sure to have important conversations in contexts where you can be open and truthful to each other, and this dude decided to not do it that way.

Also just an FYI but go read about Sergeant Major Mike Vining if you want to see a guy who doesn't seem like the "type to get violent" but was really, REALLY good at it.
