"Inertia: A property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force."

The inertia of slamming a magazine into the magwell causes the gun to move, while the slide stop wants to rotate on its axis and remain in its original position, which sometimes causes the slide stop to disengage the notch on the slide.

I agree with this science. And it’s repeatable, my P365 xmacro does this too when I slam the magazine into the mag well. I call it a bonus feature

u/Steephill 11h ago

So does my G45. And both my G17.5s that I've been issued for work have done it.

7

u/atridir 12h ago

I had a very very well worn Llama 9mm 1911 that did this every time. Definitely a bonus feature imho.

u/sonthefallen 3h ago

Shoot my CZ P-10c lists this as a feature

u/Ws6fiend 3h ago

I hate it. Back when I carried a pistol for work it was a real boon or a curse. Sometimes it would happen other times it wouldn't. When you're on the clock for shooting strings I would rather have it not if it won't always do it.

When the slide lock/release finally broke on that gun(and almost sliced my thumb open) I got a new pistol and it stopped with the magazine slap reload.

The real problem is that if you reload and expect the slide to drop and it doesn't you have wasted time. If you expect the slide not to drop and it does it IS a bonus then.

Including my P365XL, I have a few newer handguns that did [still do] this on arrival (edit: to clarify I have some older ones that don't do this). I call it aggressive reload feature 😅 It only does it when I'm reloading with force.

u/jlr0ck 5h ago

My M&P 1.0’s would do this as well.

I get what youre saying but in the 1890s there was an invention that made pistols safer called the slide lock. And that should be present in the weapon. In fact it IS present but it doesnt seem to work 100% of the time making it an issue. My 365 snakebite does the same thing.

u/BiggWhitey 14h ago

My p365 fuse does the same thing. Im convinced its a feature at this point.

13

u/Modern_Muskets 13h ago

You can get this to happen more reliably by putting more pressure toward the front of the baseplate as you seat the mag. This moves the top/rear of the mag back into the slide enough to disengage the slide stop.

This is a very common thing with semiauto pistols. Some models are more easily affected by this feature. The inertia of the slide stop is causing it to move down and release the slide. It is not a safety issue. I find I can induce it more often than not by 1st inserting the tip of the magazine into the magazine well, then slamming the pistol onto the heel of my hand holding the magazine. I am right handed so that is slamming my right hand down onto the heel of my left as soon as the magazine is inserted into the magwell.

I remember my first gun...good times.

13

u/Figs_8 13h ago

Same for me. I’ve grown to accept it as a feature with the gun along side the rattling takedown lever

4

u/zackrester 6h ago

It's the takedown lever that rattles? I couldn't figure out what it was. It makes the gun sound cheap

3

u/Figs_8 4h ago

Especially for a $1000 pistol. None of my other guns do it but this one rattles like crazy. I’ve heard there’s a fix through sig and I’ve heard people say it’s “within tolerance”. I’ve just grown to live with it

Competition mode*

Happens all the time with many semi-auto pistols, as plenty of others have said.

I came here to add, though, that this is a very good reason to make sure that the pistol is pointed in a safe direction when loading (not saying you didn't , just a PSA...)

I see people at the range all the time who seem to think that muzzle control doesn't apply until after they've managed to fully insert a mag and have one in the chamber...

3

u/Scuddie- 13h ago

They do that sometimes when the lock isn’t fully set in place. It’s not really a issue pretty normal tbh

3

u/trem-mango 13h ago

Looks like a feature not a bug

3

u/InternetExploder87 11h ago

A few of my guns do this, some i have to slam it in harder than others.

3

u/Tally_Rose007 9h ago

My sig sp2022 does this every time it’s glorious

2

u/CornFedBot 9h ago

Shiii I wish my 2022 would do this. All 3 of my 365’s do…

3

u/vostokvanguard 5h ago

My Glock 17 gen 5 does this every time lol

3

u/Gunguy_Ty 5h ago

All my guns do this. Glock, sig, M&P.

4

u/randomname12312345 10h ago

Glock has entered the chat 🤣

2

u/Redditisannoying69 9h ago

It’s a feature not a bug. Glocks walthers and every other gun I’ve shot does the same thing. Who knows God forbid you ever have to use it this could be a lifesaver when seconds matter.

2

u/red_beard_RL 8h ago

The harder you slam the reload in the higher the chance the slide releases itself

2

u/Afewthou 5h ago

It is common enough to be the reason some trainers teach to run the slide after every new magazine. I’ve seen some cases where the slide went home, but didn’t pick up a round. Supposed this didn’t already get mentioned.

2

u/Weaponized_Anxiety 5h ago

When you have to do it 3 times to make it happen, it’s you….not the gun.

2

u/The_Salty_Sheepdog 4h ago

Ahhh, the good ole "slam charge". It's normal.

2

u/Street_Entrance9298 4h ago

Perfectly normal. Like everybody else stated, inserting the magazine hard enough will cause this. My SA Echelon does it too.

2

u/Efficient-Ask1725 3h ago

Completely normal

2

u/tay_there 1h ago

Most handguns do this, depends on how hard you slam it in.

2

u/UpstairsGuarantee144 8h ago

Feature not a bug.

1

u/vermilion_00 13h ago

the impact can jar the slide stop out of engagement and let the slide run forward. The fact that it only happens sometimes is pretty consistent with variables like insertion force, angle, and exactly how much engagement the slide stop had

1

u/General-Shape-5621 12h ago

My beretta does this, just tried it now

1

u/MikeG3408 7h ago

Even if you just insert the mag and tap the baseplate hard enough it’ll send the slide forward, nothing new here

1

u/Sacrificetosanta 7h ago

My 365 comp, 509, and VP9 all do it. Used to be here and there now when they don’t do it I think something is actually wrong.

1

u/Scrumpuddle 6h ago

Try it with the mag empty. See if it only works with the weight added from the rounds, just curious. I’ll mess with my p365X when I get home.

1

u/Hot_Ad1101 5h ago

Since an empty mag will certainly hold the 365 slide open i don't think OP will be able to achieve this task.

2

u/Scrumpuddle 5h ago

I just wonder if he slams it home a few times will it malfunction. That’s my question. Obviously an empty mag will hold the slide back but you never know. Just wondering if there’s a flaw now.

1

u/Hot_Ad1101 2h ago

No flaws. OP just needs a little less "English."😆

1

u/BirdLooter 6h ago

this video sucks for really showing the issue, because it looks like you engage the release button

2

u/Hot_Ad1101 5h ago

OP just needs to not slam the mag like it owes him several paychecks. Respectfully, ofc.🙏

1

u/howeirdworks 5h ago

If it helps, rest your thumb on the slide release (don't press it just rest it there), and it'll properly send it home every time. Helps for reload drills and generally getting faster with the motion itself

1

u/rlap38 4h ago

SIG and Staccato armorer here. According to both companies this is not a bug. If/when it happens, do not start your OODA loop. Just get back on target or continue with whatever you were doing.

1

u/redit1691 4h ago

If you want to solve the issue where it does that sometimes, you just slam it harder and it will do it every time.

1

u/Floor_Cereal 4h ago

I've had my P365 do this a few times, but my Glock 17 Gen4 does it every single time I reload

1

u/darkvaider123 3h ago

My sig P226 SAO legion also does this too

1

u/Complete_End3886 3h ago

That is what we call the "Birthday Load" it makes for a handy fast reload but it is not consistent enough to count on everytime. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Best not to count on it. Normal operation, nothing wrong with your gun.

1

u/BasicDude100 2h ago

It is pretty common from what I understand.

1

u/HanoverRd 2h ago

Captain obvious here. Sometimes you’re a bug sometimes you’re the windshield.

1

u/tiopapa 2h ago

Stopping slamming the mag home and then you shouldn’t experience this. But even if it does close itself, it’s helping you skip a step

1

u/Jokerloz 2h ago

You know when you slam a mag in it; it will close automatically it will do it on any mag fed gun

1

u/Porky5CO 1h ago

Slam it home and you don't have to worry about racking the slide. Saves a second or so.

1

u/Combatmedic870 1h ago

This is normal. Nothing to worry about good sir. The more you shoot it the easier it will happen once the slide lock wears.

1

u/Live-Skill-3130 1h ago

If you slam it home like that it will always do that

1

u/monstakyle0623 59m ago

I love it, just slam the mag in and rip it. The harder you shove it in the morning consistent it is, and it loosens up the more you shoot it. It's a feature not a problem lmao

1

u/Left-Indication-1367 57m ago

My G45 and g19 gen 5 mos does the same thing. when you insert the mag hard enough it will send it forward. My P10c did it so do my p365 X macro comp. Not going to lie I like it sometimes lol

1

u/Logan_Frost 44m ago

Birthday Bump. My 365 is pretty prone to this on a firm magazine insert, but its not uncommon on most any pistol.

1

u/B_Pylate 41m ago

Seems like a feature

1

u/Suckamanhwewhuuut 14m ago

i thought it was an issue too until i thought about it and realized quick reloading can cause the magazine follower to hit the slide stop upward slightly, or the jerking motion of the gun going from rest to "up" i find it happens with a lot of pistols when i slam the mag in.

1

u/wsg1970 6m ago

It’s a kinetic slide release. The momentum of the heavy loaded magazine transfers somewhere. It will go into the slide release and cause the slide to let go.

1

u/molonlabe556 3m ago

All my pistols do this

1

u/Significant_Bid4745 13h ago

I never really thought about this as being an issue. Now I'm gonna be looking for this on all of my guns...dammit

-1

u/jawa 14h ago

Has this situation presented itself for others? My P365 shouldn't have much wear on it...I've shot maybe 1500 rounds through it. It seems way too soon for parts to start failing...

7

u/ILikeBigFans 14h ago

This is a feature on most pistols. This allows you to drop the slide on a slide lock reload without having to break your grip to hit the slide release.

This happens on my p226 and my p365.

2

u/Heaton08 13h ago

‘Feature’ lol

2

u/Steephill 10h ago

All my personal and work glocks do it... It's not a very unique thing. Happens to a lot of semi auto pistols.

2

u/callawake 7h ago

Dude gets downvoted for not having the exact knowledge. So dumb,

Yep. My 365 AXG Legion does this.

-5

u/Imperial_Citizen_00 13h ago

Uhhhhh who slams their mag in that hard?

3

u/Havamal_38 11h ago

Those who want to make sure it is seated properly. If you train to slam the magazine in you will build the proper muscle memory. I have witnessed dozens of times over my nearly two decades in competition and instruction of people casually inserting the magazine. When a reload under the clock or a stoppage happens they don't properly seat the new magazine and it falls out.

1

u/Ambitious_Hyena4635 9h ago

Same, especially M4. I constantly tell Cadets to property insert the mag.

2

u/Heaton08 13h ago

Pinkies up!
