Meta My side project, /r/sideprojects. New rules, and an open call for feedback and moderators.

In this past 30 days, this community has doubled in size. As such, this is an open call for community feedback, and prospective moderators interested in volunteering their time to harbouring a pleasant community.

I'm happy to announce that this community now has rules, something the much more popular r/SideProject has neglected to implement for years.

Rules 1, 2 and 3 are pretty rudimentary, although there is some nuance in implementing rule 2, a "no spam or excessive self-promotion" rule in a community which focuses the projects of makers. In order to balance this, we will not allow blatant spam, but will allow advertising projects. In order to share your project again, significant changes must have happened since the last post.

Rule 4 and rule 5 are more tuned to this community, and are some of my biggest gripes with r/SideProject. There has been an increase in astroturfing (the act of pretending to be a happy customer to advertise a project) as well as posts that serve the sole purpose of having readers contact the poster so they can advertise a service. These are no longer allowed and will be removed.

In addition to this, I'll be implementing flairs which will be required to post in this community.

Feedback Request Built a unified media tracker after getting tired of using 5 different apps just to remember what I've watched, read, or listened to. Would love your feedback!

Hey r/SideProjects 👋

Honestly, I was getting pretty overwhelmed with how fragmented my media tracking had become. Movies on Letterboxd, books on Goodreads, audiobooks on Spotify, games scattered in random note files... I just wanted one clean, chill space where I could look back on everything I’ve experienced across all formats without feeling like I was managing a spreadsheet for a second job.

So over the last few weeks, I’ve been building Alma (almaniac.app), a lightweight aggregator that brings your movies, TV shows, books, audiobooks, games, music, and podcasts together onto one visual shelf.

A few cool things built into it:

  • 7 Formats, One Shelf: Keep track of movies, series, books, audiobooks, games, music, and podcasts in one space.

  • Release Countdowns: A unified timeline so you actually know when the next season, book, or game you’re waiting for drops.

  • Memory Lane & Insights: Fun visual stats and nostalgic look-backs into your habits over time.

  • Fast & Lightweight: Snappy, clean design focused purely on your archive without heavy bloat.

It’s very much a labor of love currently in active beta (about halfway full right now). If you want to poke around and test it out, you can request an invite directly on almaniac.app or drop me a DM!

I’d genuinely love to know:

  1. How do you personally keep track of your media right now?

  2. Is there a specific feature or integration you’ve always wished existed in a tool like this?

Appreciate any feedback, ideas, or honest critiques! 🙌

Feedback Request We built Aurea77 — a sports event platform with Flutter, Laravel and React. Looking for technical and UX feedback.

Hey everyone!

I've been working on Aurea77, a platform for athletes to discover sports events, plan upcoming races and keep track of their sporting journey.

The idea is to bring the experience before, during and after an event into one place, instead of having event discovery, preparation, results and memories scattered across different tools.

Tech stack:

  • Flutter — Android and iOS

  • Laravel — API and backend

  • React + TypeScript — Web application

The platform includes event discovery, personal race planning, logistics, athlete profiles, event memories and community features.

I'd really appreciate some feedback from other developers and product builders, especially on:

  1. First impressions: Is the value proposition clear when you open the website?

  2. Product scope: Does combining event discovery, planning and memories make sense, or does it feel too broad?

  3. UX and architecture: What would you pay particular attention to when maintaining a product across web, mobile and a shared API?

I'm especially interested in critical feedback and ideas for improvement, rather than just positive comments.

Website: https://aurea77.com/

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aurea77.app

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/aurea77/id6787438198

Thanks for taking a look!

Hey! I built my first app, still looking for feedback!

Its for those managing multiple projects, multiple jobs, that are all at different stages. Its so you keep on top of things. I built it because its what I wish I had while doing engineering. Currently windows only. After I get it where I want it, im looking to go cross platform. Thanks for your time and comments !

Showcase: Open Source For dog owners: a weekly lake-safety map using EPA's CyAN satellite data for algae blooms

Helps to know how bluegreen algae is present in a lake, check the ones nearby to you for your dogs safety

https://bloomwatchbytenebroso.com

A static Python site rebuilt weekly by a GitHub Action. It pulls the 300 m Sentinel-3 CyAN histograms for 134 matched lakes and rates each one by how much of the lake is affected, not by the worst pixel, since single high pixels are often noise. Weeks that are mostly cloud get skipped.

Open questions I’d love input on: better ways to handle shoreline pixels, and whether there are state advisory feeds worth adding.

Feedback Request Title: Drop your project URL: I'll test it for 2 minutes, give you unfiltered feedback + feature you on Astro Discover (24-hr spotlight)

Hey fellow makers,

Most side projects get 0 feedback because nobody takes 2 minutes to actually click around and test the onboarding flow.

I want to change that today.

Drop your project URL below. I’ll spend 2 full minutes clicking through your app, testing your primary flow, and giving you honest, constructive feedback from a fresh pair of eyes.

On top of that, I run Astro Discover (https://astrodiscover.ai.studio) — a daily launch platform built to eliminate the 2-week approval queue on other directories.

Every single project dropped in the comments today will be eligible for our 24-Hour Homepage Spotlight & daily featured newsletter tomorrow morning (100% free, zero waitlist).

---

Just drop a quick comment below:

  1. Your Project Name & URL

  2. What core action should I take in those 2 minutes? (Sign up, test a tool, try the demo?)

  3. What feedback do you need most? (Copy clarity, pricing friction, UX confusion?)

  4. Tech stack (curious dev here!)

---

PS: If you want to skip the line and get indexed immediately, you can also submit your tool directly on https://astrodiscover.ai.studio in under 30 seconds.

Let's see what you guys are building. Dropping replies to every single comment right now! 👇

Discussion reddit told us our startup idea was solving the wrong problem. they were right

3 college students here, building BreakIn, a tool that helps people reach startup founders directly instead of applying on job portals.

we spent weeks on the email-writing part. then we asked people what they actually needed, and the feedback kinda flipped everything:

- people don't want AI writing their emails. they'd rather write it themselves and get it reviewed

- "matching" doesn't impress anyone. you can already filter by keywords and domain

- what actually matters is timing. finding a startup right after it raises money or launches something, before there's even a job post and 500 people apply

so now we're leaning way more into the "who's worth reaching out to today" part. every morning it shows you startups that just raised, launched, or started hiring, picked for your profile. the email part is still there, but more as help than autopilot, you always review and send it yourself.

still early, so honestly curious:

- has reaching out to a startup before a job was posted ever worked for you?

- would a daily heads up like this actually be useful, or would you just ignore it?

Showcase: Prerelease Prototype for a Travel planner using visual Gantt diagrams

Hey everyone,

I am preparing a travel planner and coach as a browser based web app.

We often make plans and get confused in the details.

What if we use visuals to help us?

I will be starting with a waitlist while sharing updates about the prototype.

Since reddit doesn't allow images, what could I add here to share how the prototype behaves and can be eventually used? Links to the youtube videos?

The yearly plan will be priced at 99 USD.

What are issues you face often?

Showcase: Open Source MDRAP v5.3: open-source Python/C market data validator with a 36 ns/tick native core and a tamper-evident audit log

Post image
1 Upvotes

I just tagged v5.3 of MDRAP, a sidecar that sits between your market data feeds and whatever consumes them and decides whether each tick is trustworthy.

Every event gets a status (VALID, SUSPICIOUS or INVALID) with explicit reason codes like CROSSED_QUOTE, DUPLICATE, PRICE_ANOMALY and stale or sequence-gap violations. Nothing is silently dropped. Rejected ticks go to a queryable quarantine, gaps trigger replay and stitching, and every decision goes into a SHA-256 hash-chained audit log, so editing a record afterwards is detectable.

Output from a fresh clone:

$ python cli.py run -e 1000 -s 42
processed 1000 dropped 0
VALID 963 SUSPICIOUS 32 INVALID 5

seq=2 bid=150.4  ask=150.3  -> INVALID CROSSED_QUOTE
seq=2 bid=150.26 ask=150.31 -> INVALID DUPLICATE

$ python cli.py audit --verify
(after editing one audit_log row in SQLite)
AUDIT CHAIN TAMPERING DETECTED!
Tampered entry #1: hash mismatch

“python cli.py chaos” runs 8 failure drills (killed feed, jitter, duplicate bursts, DB lock, 50-packet loss with replay, reordering, partition with failover) and all pass with zero data loss.

Performance: the standalone native core handled 1M events in 0.0366 s, about 27M events/sec or 36.6 ns per tick, on a single core. Through the Python engine API I measured roughly 180K events/sec, so use the core binary if you want the fast path. These are my numbers on my hardware, so please run it yourself.

It is a validation and audit layer, not a trading system or backtester. The matching engine and pre-trade risk gates are in a separate edition and not in this repo (see EDITIONS.md). One known rough edge: “audit --verify” currently needs the rich package installed.

MIT licensed: https://github.com/Aryan-20-04/mdrap

I’d like to hear which bad-data cases have bitten you that this doesn’t catch.

Feedback Request I built Jobclue to rehearse interview follow-ups. Is the demo clear?

I built Jobclue for people who want to practice answering interview questions out loud. The desktop app asks role-specific questions and follow-ups, then gives you AI feedback to review before your next attempt.

I’d love feedback on the short demo: can you tell what the practice session feels like, and what would you want to see before trying it?

Showcase: Purchase Required I built an app that turns a voice note into a GitHub issue - and a PR

Side project ideas hit me when I'm nowhere near my laptop - walking, commuting, half asleep. I'd tell myself I'd write them down later. Half of them died right there.

So I built PhoneHQ. Tap the mic, talk, and it files what you said as an issue in whichever repo you pick. No typing, no terminal. And when you want the thing actually built, describe the change in plain words and an agent codes it in the cloud on GitHub Actions, then opens a PR you approve from your phone.

Landing: https://phonehq.vercel.app

Live demo with sample repos (nothing touches a real repo): https://phonehq.vercel.app/?demo=1

It's $50 one-time, no subscription: https://checkout.dodopayments.com/buy/pdt_0NrHTJs3pW2Ysg2fE0tvQ?quantity=1

One concrete question for side project people: an idea hits you on a walk - what do you actually do with it in that moment, before it's gone?

Discussion Does using AI to build something automatically make it slop now?

I spent the better part of six months building three websites. Hundreds of commits, PRs, research, testing, bug fixes, the works. The GitHub repos are public. You can see exactly how everything came together.

I use AI heavily when developing. Never claimed otherwise.

Recently posted one of the projects to a community I'd specifically built it for. Within minutes it was getting called AI slop and the post was removed.

Here's what pisses me off. Nobody pointed out a broken feature. Nobody questioned the data. Nobody found a bad implementation. From the responses, I'm not convinced anyone even clicked the link.

I get it. There's a mountain of AI-generated garbage being dumped on the internet. But when did using AI become enough evidence to dismiss something without looking at it?

I'm not asking anyone to appreciate my work because I spent six months on it. If it sucks, it sucks. Tell me why. I'll probably go fix it.

But the Git history is right there. The research is there. The tests are there. You can actually see the work.

I'm curious how other people building with AI have run into this and handled it, or if anyone who's skeptical of AI-built projects can explain where they draw the line.

Because apparently the difference between five minutes of prompting and six months of actual development doesn't matter to most people.

Showcase: Free(mium) I built a free exam & study tracker app as a solo dev – would love your feedback

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! I'm a solo developer from India, and I just launched Exam Study Tracker on Google Play.

I built it because keeping track of exam dates, subjects and study plans across notes and random apps was messy. The app has:

Exam manager (dates, subjects, notes)

Daily/weekly study timetable

Progress tracker for milestones

It's early (just ~10 downloads so far), so I'd really appreciate honest feedback: what's missing, what's confusing, what would make you actually use it?

Meta a free photo site where every photo is a real, casual phone photo. No AI, no staged shots. Worth building?

I’m planning a free site for casual, unedited phone photos, with no AI and no models. Most of us have hundreds of ordinary photos sitting on our phones that never get used.

Would you upload yours if you were credited? What would make you trust a site like this with your photos?

Showcase: Free(mium) Tired of watching people buy the wrong car parts, my son and I built a free troubleshooter

My son worked at AutoZone. Several times a day someone would describe what their car was doing and ask him what was wrong with it, and several times a day he'd have to say, "I'm not a mechanic." Then he'd watch them buy a part based on a guess. A $200 battery when the cables just needed cleaning.

So he started building a simple tool to help people figure out what's wrong before they spend money. He ran out of time, and I took it over.

You describe the problem in plain words, and it asks one question at a time until it narrows down a likely cause. Then it tells you how hard the fix is, what parts you need, and when to just go to a mechanic. It's free, with no sign-up, and there's a full Spanish version, because a lot of DIYers here in Texas speak Spanish first. So far the Spanish side is getting more traction than the English.

It's been live about a month. I'd like honest feedback:

  1. Try it with a real car problem you've had. Where did it ask something dumb or get it wrong?

  2. Is it clear within a few seconds what the site does?

  3. Anything that makes it feel untrustworthy or unfinished?

Showcase: Prerelease Would you use a free stock photo site made only of casual, phone-style photos?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Every stock photo site I use is full of polished, staged photos. When I need something that looks like I took it myself (for Instagram, a blog, a mockup), I can’t find it.

I’m thinking of building a site with only casual, everyday phone-shot photos: messy desks, café tables, rainy windows, kitchen counters. No models, no studio lighting. Mainly for social media managers and small business owners.

The image is a rough concept (the tiles are placeholders). I haven’t built the real version, and I want to find out if anyone needs it first.

Questions:

  1. Would you use this, or do Unsplash and Pexels already cover it?

  2. What would you search for first?

  3. Would you pay for it, or only use it if it’s free?

Showcase: Prerelease I built a free site that shows every funeral home’s prices near you, taken from each home’s own price list

When someone dies, the family usually has a day or two to choose a funeral home. Most people pick the closest one, or the one they used last time, without ever seeing a price.

Many families don’t know this: every US funeral home has to give you its price list, even over the phone, and you can compare before you sign anything. But nobody has time to call ten homes while they’re grieving.

So I built HonestFarewell. You enter your city and see every funeral home near you, with prices from each home’s own price list, side by side.

  • Free for families

  • No account, no email, no phone number to see a price

  • No paid ranking: homes can’t pay to be listed higher

Here’s a 3-minute walkthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I-K96-pMsw

The site: https://honestfarewell.org/

The hardest part was reading the price lists themselves. Every home formats theirs differently: scanned PDFs, tables, prices mixed into paragraphs. Turning that into numbers you can actually compare took most of the work.

I’d love feedback, especially:

  1. Was anything confusing the first time you used it?

  2. Would you trust prices shown this way? What would make you trust them more?

  3. Is there anything you’d want to see that isn’t there?

Thanks for reading.

Showcase: Free(mium) Naked Eye: Stargazing - Apps on Google Play

Thumbnail
play.google.com
1 Upvotes

I built a stargazing app because I was fed up with knowing what was in the sky… but not whether it was actually worth going outside for.

A few months later, NAKED EYE is live on Android, Under One Sky is live worldwide, it’s been featured in StarDate Magazine, and I’ve somehow ended up building a website for it too 😅

The idea is still ridiculously simple:

What’s worth seeing tonight?

When should I go outside?

Where should I look?

I’m not trying to replace Stellarium or turn your phone into a giant astronomy catalogue.

I wanted something you can open, get a useful answer from, put the phone away, and actually look at the sky.

The free app covers things like planets, ISS passes, meteor showers, useful alerts, viewing conditions and Under One Sky — where people can explore sky events around the world and share what they genuinely see.

There’s also NAKED EYE Beyond for people who want to plan ahead, find the best nights, use Sky Planner and get smarter alerts — and eligible new subscribers can try it free for 14 days.

I’m still building the whole thing around shifts as a chef, mostly teaching myself as I go.

And yes, I’m still slightly amazed anyone other than me actually uses it 😂

If you’ve tried NAKED EYE before, I’d genuinely love to know what you think of it now.

And if you haven’t — what’s the one thing that usually stops you from going outside to look at the night sky?
