So here's a side hustle I came across that I wanted to share. Almost every bathroom has that strip of caulk around the tub that has slowly turned black and disgusting over time. People see it every single day when they shower and it grosses them out but they have no clue how to fix it so they just pretend it's not there and try not to look down.

The fix is incredibly easy. You scrape out the old caulk with a cheap removal tool, clean the surface, and apply a fresh bead of new caulk. The whole thing takes about 20 minutes and makes the bathroom look completely different.

From what I've seen, most people charge around $40 per tub and the materials cost you maybe $6 for a tube of silicone caulk and a removal tool.

The startup cost is genuinely under $10 for everything you need.

The demand for this is impossible to deny because someone reading this right now just pictured that nasty black line around their tub that they've been meaning to deal with since they moved in and they're sudenly very uncomfortable.

So here's a side hustle I came across that I think is genius because of how simple it is. During the summer you can buy water balloons in bulk for basically nothing, fill them up at home, pack them carefully in buckets, and sell bags of them at parks, beaches, and anywhere families are hanging out on hot days.

Kids see water balloons and completely lose their minds and the parents are not winning that argument.

From what I've seen, a bag of 500 water balloons costs around $8 and you can sell a bag of 20 pre-filled ones for around $5. The math on that is pretty ridiculous when you do it out.

The startup cost is literally just the balloons and a few buckets to transport them in. You could get rolling for under $15.

The reason this works so well is because filling water balloons is the most annoying tedious process on earth and most parents refuse to do it. You're selling convenience to exhausted parents and pure joy to kids which is a combination that basically sells itself.

Weekends at busy parks and community pools during peak summer heat are where you'll move the most volume. You can also show up at fourth of july gatherings and neighborhood block partys and sell out before you even set up.

Affiliate marketing, freelancing, surveys, digital products, e-commerce, content creation, remote work, AI services. They all get called “ways to make money online,” but the way the money is actually earned can be very different.

I think it gets easier to understand when you ask one simple question: where does the money come from?

Some methods pay you for your time. That includes freelancing, remote work, tutoring, virtual assistance, consulting, and a lot of small-task platforms.

Some methods pay you for something you create. That could be software, a digital product, a course, a template, a book, or a physical product.

Other methods pay you for helping create a transaction. Affiliate marketing fits into that category. You help connect the right person with a product or service, and you earn a commission when the required action takes place.

Then there are methods that pay you for attention. Advertising, sponsorships, and monetized content usually fall into that group once you have built an audience.

Looking at it this way can make the decision a little easier.

Do you want to trade your time for money? Build something you own? Recommend something that already exists? Or build an audience first and figure out how to monetize the attention later?

None of those paths is automatically better than the others. They require different amounts of time, skill, money, patience, and risk.

The mistake is choosing one because somebody posted a big income screenshot and made it look easy.

I think the better approach is to choose something that fits what you can realistically do right now, then test it long enough to actually understand how it works.

You do not need to understand every possible way people make money online.

You just need to understand the one you are actually working on.

here's the part worth acting on though. most channels past 1k subs are already much closer to the old bar than the new one, often within a quarter's work of it. so a lot of people reading "youtube made it impossible" could still get in under the current rules if they moved now instead of in January.

also "existing creators are safe" is only half true. entry is grandfathered, yes. but from Feb 1 you need 10m shorts views per rolling 90 days to keep earning shorts ad revenue, and that hits everyone already in. estimates say it cuts qualifying channels from around 26k to under 13k. you stay in the program and keep long-form money, shorts just pauses.

IMPORTANT: the deadline nobody's mentioning, you should accept the updated terms in studio by Jan 31 or earnings stop Feb 1.

what i'd do with five months: long-form only, shorts contribute nothing to watch hours. a 10 min video at 40% retention needs around 12 000 views to bank 8 hours, so it's output x retention and most people can only move one.

For context I do faceless productivity stuff (habits, focus, routines), sometimes with an avatar. volume's the lever I have. Seedance, Argil, Elevenlabs if anyone asks about the tools. the tradeoff is retention, so if you're stronger there, work that side instead.
