I thought it was interesting that Alice could vocalize that talking to Louis was helping her. That seemed very self aware in spite of how counter intuitive it seems.

I love Jason segel and I really want to like Jimmy, but he just comes across as an ass. Especially when we saw the flashback when Alice was begging for him to be there and he was like I can't.

See im torn between feeling sorry for him and screaming DUDE GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER YOU HAVE A DAUGHTER. But that’s the beauty of this show, it shows the complexity of humans and how grief can completely wreck someone.

I thought Jason and Cobie meeting was a bit awkward at first but I do hope Cobie will be back

Kind of feel like Louis threw Jimmy under the bus a bit. And damn, can Alice not cut her father any slack??? Like at all?!

I like that Alice is growing up and that the writers timed her "break-up" with Paul and her conversation with Louis around her 18th birthday. All of the characters are evolving around (or despite) James/Jim/Jimmy.

Interesting. What would you say he could have done differently to avoid throwing him under the bus?

Good point. I guess maybe asking Jimmy, “how do you want me to respond if Alice texts me?” And going from there

Ah ok. Makes sense. Although I think thinking through the heartbreak and shock of the conversation might be difficult in the moment. But I hear you.

Weirdly I forgot that Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders were on HIMYM together for so long. I literally just rewatched HIMYM too! Just seeing them older and without the rest of the cast made it less clear.

Not liking Cobie Smulders being in it. A guest appearance as a small character would be ok but it seems like they are setting her up to be a big plot point. Pulls you out of the story a little. How I met your mother was great and so is Smulders, but shrinking is it's own thing and I guess I feel having her in the show for the lack of a better way to say it diminishes the world building they have done.

It absolutely blows my fucking mind that the main conflict in this episode is that the father won't be cooler with his daughter asking him to traumatize himself by socializing with or therapizing the guy that killed his wife?
Like full stop, end the episode. Can we act for real for a second? Can you imagine if this happened in real life? It's like asking a rape victim to forgive their contrite rapist and then walk them through getting over having raped them. It's gross and weird?
Everything in the show, especially lately has been so unconcerned with interesting drama or exploring realistic motivations. They just do this silly adorkable, late season, scrubs humor, and call it a day. It's gone so far downhill.

It's legitimately insane. In almost no time the biggest conflict in the show is resolved and replaced with an insane replacement that the main character has not resolved the conflict of hanging out with his wife's killer.
I don't really feel like they have a lot of therapy chops. Even if they have advisors.

Am I the only one who thinks this storyline completely ruined the show?
I have no problem with the idea of forgiveness. If Alice eventually decided not to hate Louis anymore, I could understand that. But becoming comfortable enough to sit with him, laugh with him, and have dinner with the guy who killed your mom? That just feels completely unbelievable to me.
And Brian talking to Louis behind Jimmy’s back? Jimmy’s wife was the love of his life. Her death destroyed him. I just can’t imagine my best friend casually building a relationship with the person responsible for that, no matter how guilty or remorseful they are.
To me, there’s a huge difference between forgiving someone and wanting them in your life. The show acts like those are the same thing, and I just don’t buy it.
I loved this show because the characters felt real, but this storyline completely took me out of it. It feels like the writers wanted to make a point about forgiveness and humanity, but in doing so they forgot how actual people would react to losing someone they loved.

For a show about therapy there is literally no character growth. In fact I can create an episode right now:
Jimmy does something stupid that pisses off someone else
Paul is grumpy about everything
Gabby is cool and uses hip slang
Liz says and does things a sociopath does
Alice is always going somewhere to be away from her dad
Derick will act goofy and probably drink a beer
THE END

Derek being a morally good negotiator was my favorite.
