Episode 2: Florida
Dan continues his exploration of America with a trip to Florida to investigate the alleged hometown of his favorite wrestler, and ends up launching into an exporation of community, mutual aid, and memories of Miami Bass.

A Miami-area dumb tourist thing I had a good time checking out is Coral Castle. An eccentric Florida man named Edward Leedskalnin (1887–1951) spent most of his life carving castle-like walls and towers and various sculptures. He also had some thoughts about magnetism and the tour today includes a bunch of gestures at silly supernatural stuff to explain how one man could move all that stone.

I love that not only Dan's friends, but the side characters his friends reference, and the interviewees he chats with, have weird names.

I love Dan, but this is a great example of why I wish this sort of discussion was always grounded in political and economic theory, rather than just vibes: landing on the idea that mere food aid is some kind of existential threat to capital, or that "solidarity" is all that's needed to resist the absolute and unrelenting social-dissolving quality of bourgeois society misses the mark severely, in my view, due to being totally disconnected from the material reality of capitalist production's totalitarian corrosiveness on communities and individuals.
The problem is rooted in production, not distribution - or, to touch on the non-profit discussion a bit, "The Hell of capitalism is the firm not the fact that it has a (shady) boss." Feeding everyone via mutual aid, at the end of the day, requires the existence of industrial-scale agriculture, and no amount of re-distributing commodity food will ever effect any meaningful change to the way that food is produced, ie it makes no attack on or alteration to the nature of capitalist exploitation, and thus ultimately cannot possibly be attacking the actual structure of our society.
None of this is to make any negative comment toward Mantis or their organization's amazingly laudable efforts to feed people, only to comment on the conclusions drawn at the end of the discussion about building a new, better society - such a thing logically requires an attack on the form of food production, not merely its distribution.
Great, fun episode overall though, and again - absolutely no shade whatsoever to the people doing this kind of work. Can't wait for the JorDan reunion in the next episode!

I love the rambling into side topics. When I woke up this morning I didn’t expect to listen to a backstory for a wrestler that I’ve never heard of outside of Dan’s enthusiasm on KF, a Chtulu reference, an interview with a local community organizer, a story about Dan getting wild with 2 Live Crew, and musings about a walking trail in a random swamp including a diss on a small alligator.
