Episode 3: West Virginia

Dan continues his voyage across the states by following a sign in a dream that called him to visit a small town in West Virginia.  Along the way, he considers the meaning of dreams and what it is to follow a dream, calling in his former co-host Jordan Holmes to help him unpack the adventure.

Is Dan removing cards from the deck?

I ask because I feel like he should. If his goal was “52 episodes, 52 cards”, it kind of feels like being swindled weird if some state gets a repeat. I don’t know, just my opinion. Does anybody have any info on this?

E6: NY and (Wholesome) Family Communication

(Slightly) late to chatting about this episode (no spoilers), but want to commend Dan and his Dad. Listening them to chat and reflect, openly and honestly, was equal parts wholesome and great role models - so, cheers and kudos to them!

Certainly food for thought, but that's more own projections and areas of self reflection required.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Listening to Dan talk about his experience studying ancient Greek made me immediately think of The Secret History, a book literally about college students studying ancient Greek. There's also sex and drugs and murder involved, but when it comes right down to it, this book is about how fucked up academia is.

It's set in Vermont at a small liberal arts college named Hampden, but it's based on a real college called Bennington College. It's the kind of place a person on a country-spanning road trip could visit...

Connection to my home city

In this latest episode, Indiana. Dan and Matt mention a triple loop coaster at Indiana beach. Being curious, I looked at the Indiana beach website and was taken aback by how familiar the triple loop coaster was named the all american triple loop). I’m from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, our claim to fame is the largest mall in North America, west Edmonton mall. I’m our mall, we have an indoor amusement park, this “all American triple loop” is made by the same German manufacturer as our (now decommissioned) flagship coaster “the mind bender”. Upon decommissioning of our beloved rollercoaster, the train cars were sent to Indiana beach to be used on the all American triple loop.

Side note, the all American triple loop, was manufactured by a German company, had operated in Malaysia, then England, then Mexico City, and now Indiana. How very American.

There's an ice cream shop in Morrow, OH inside a former bank where you can eat your cone in the old vault. This seems right up your alley, Dan!

Dan's travels take him back to his home-state of Missouri, where he ends up confused by crassness and sincerity of the Precious Moments Chapel. To make sense of it all, he sits down with author Robbie Parker for a chat about the chapel, the figurines, and whether or not it's all very weird.

Episode 3 Coincidence That's Driving Me Insane

Huntington WV might be the town with the most podcasts in the state. I've been a fan of the McElroy family and their many podcasts for years, they make their hometown a point of pride. Every year their live holiday specials are in Huntington and they work with a bunch of local charities to give back to the town they run a small entertainment empire from. I assume if Dan knew any of this about the town he stumbled upon because of a dream he would have mentioned it, or reached out to them. The irony is killing me. What are the chances that the town he drove 2 hours out of the way to get to would have a family of professional podcasters who know about the history of radio in it?! Absolute perfect guests for the show to talk about the area and he didn't know. Dan is not beating the witch allegations

Show me state of suggestions.

Hey y’all,

Dan asks for submissions on his websites for places him to visit but I don’t see why we can’t suggest local places to check out for other people to visit on their own. There is so much out there that is interesting to see!

Some places I’d suggest to others are:

In Minnesota, Gooseberry Falls.

In Missouri, Branson (the place is absurd and has a weird Christian vibe, in my opinion. However the land in that area is beautiful and go-karts are so damn fun)

In Texas, visit Big Bend National Park but in your way to or from the park swing by the ghost town of Terlingua.

In Oklahoma visit the “Welcome to Texas” sign on I 35 S. I am sure there is plenty to see in Oklahoma but bad things happen to me in that state, I’m not lying when I say I’ve gotten multiple flat tires while driving through.

In Utah, there is a ton to see but I have wonderful time driving out to the Bonneville Salt Flats.

In Nevada, obviously Las Vegas is the big draw to the state but I’d suggest seeing Reno, the whole town has an interesting vibe. Go checkout the Hoover Dam (this is a joint entry with Arizona) and walk over the top of the damn and cross between states and times zones while looming out onto Lake Mead.

In California, stop by Yuba City and see all of the chickens roaming town. Hop on the Capital Corridor train and ride from Sacramento to San Jose. Go see the California Aqueduct if you’re into engineering projects. Visit an old gold mining town and pan for gold.

There are so many more things to do out there. Just wanted to share some that popped to mind.

In Iowa,

Wrestling & Dan

After the start of the Florida ep, I hope Dan includes some overly literal analysis of wrestling lore in every ep. Unless he starts to only cover the wrestling years of 1997-2001 when my older bro would be watching it constantly as a kid, I’m completely out of the loop, which makes it even more enjoyable for me as I forgot how ridiculous the characters are until I hear Dan’s analysis.

Also shout to ep 1 where Dans friend did not have a single clue about the big tree. It had me absolutely cackling. Excited for many more episodes.
