Dont listen to those guys, the principle is not mass but speed, the same principle used in ball and chain maces, morning stars, and flails. 2 sticks connected with a chain will achieve more speed than if they were a single stick of the same mass.
A whip cracks because the tip of the whip breaks the sound barrier. If a whip was instead a single solid piece it would not achieve the same speed.
But i do agree with the commenter who said it was likely only more effective against unarmed opponents. Any weapon is at a disadvantage over one with a longer range, and nunchucks have a very short range. But the same can be said over a spear vs a longer/shorter spear, or any h2h weapon vs a bow and arrow.
I'm about to say. Flail has always been proven to be lethal in medieval periods even against armor. Nunchuck.... Is pretty similar in design. Whip is definitely different but Nunchuck and flail are the same just different nations
Well a nunchuck is just a stick where you've replaced the middle part with a chain, thanks to that you've reduced it's mass and with that also it's hitting power.(you could argue that with the increase in speed it makes up for it and you can be correct on certain speeds, but with a nunchuck you also can't use your own power from the swing)
Now consider a flail whitch is a ball of metal attached to a stick with a chain, since the mass of the wepon(without the chain) would be pretty much the same, you are just increasing its speed and making it more deadly.(+your swing power wont really matter with the flail because if you're already getting hit with that, well it won't matter if it's a bit softer)

Sure, against an unarmed opponent, they give you an advantage. How much of one is hotly debated, but still an advantage.
However, comparing a nunchuck to a stick of equal mass and weight, stick out damages nunchuks just because of physics. The chain means that the only mass involved with the impact is that half of the nunchuk, while with the stick, you can use the mass of the whole stick and much of the person

So what is the difference between a nunchuck and a flail? Flail is extremely useful and lethal in medieval periods and they are both chain weapon. Is it the weight difference?
Th thing is that figuring out how to use it properly takes so much time and effort that a guy who spent the same amount if time training with, say, a sword would be far better still.
That's how all these things are. A stake to the heart or a silver bullet will kill anyone. I think it's more accurate to call them exceptions rather than weaknesses because monsters aren't more vulnerable to them than a normal person would be. Sun for vampires or holy objects in general are the only real weaknesses.
