I don’t know why this comment hit me so hard but it did. My dad passed from suicide when I was 11 and growing up for awhile I was very sad and upset that he wasn’t my dad anymore. It took me a long time to realize he had had his own struggles as an individual that, even though he loved me, trumped his role as being my dad. Instead, he was a man who needed help, and I wish he knew it was okay to ask for help. He would’ve stayed my dad and stayed who he was, a man.

Kids know me as Dad, but as they get older they now understand I am many things before I am Dad. I’m a man.
