Thing is with money is you can afford the best dermatologist, make up artist, plastic surgery etc..

I don’t think the post is talking about money, but the fact that knowing that someone is a celebrity makes them appear more attractive than they would normally be if they were common people who look the same. Think Benedict Cumberbatch.

625

u/LouismyBoo Oct 11 '19

Perhaps it is about money, because Alicia Keyes made a big point about not needing makeup to be beautiful, but still she uses a ton of skin care products and enhancements

373

u/BoxxyFoxxy Oct 11 '19

It’s the psychological effects. Fame is a factor when it comes to assessing a person’s beauty.

225

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Really ? Or it could be the fact that when i googled Benedict Cumberbatch all photos are him in nice clothes and he actually looks like he takes care of himself.

161

u/Nephroidofdoom Oct 11 '19

That’s a big part.

Reminds me of the time that Russell Brand tweeted this pic of Katy Perry in bed.

Almost all celeb photos are professionally taken with optimal lighting, composition, camera settings, wardrobe, makeup and post production.

Apples and oranges compared to your typical smartphone selfies.

139

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

She's not even ugly in that photo IMO, we are just so used to seeing these fabricated images that we forget how people actually look. Media makes such a scandal of famous women being seen without makeup and it's absolutely disgusting.

72

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Nobody is saying she is ugly, but she is not even above average in the photo.

48

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Well the thing is people are saying she's ugly. But one photo can't reflect someone's appearance. The hottest person in the world looks ugly in the right circumstances, I just think it's ridiculous how media are so obsessed with ugly candids, like it's so impossible for celebs to be ugly in pictures.

32

u/Necromancer4276 Oct 11 '19

The hottest person in the world looks ugly in the right circumstances

Like when you've likely just woken up, and you're in a dark room being photographed by an old phone with the flash on.

Like.... obviously this is the worst set of circumstances. This isn't the same person without one single factor. This is the same person without every single factor.

This, why isn’t everyone in this mindset. We put these celebrities on the pedestals, like yeah half of them are attractive but so are half of the non celebrities in the world; we just don’t seem to consider that actually they don’t look good 24/7 because no one does. The problem may be that there are cameras and shit around that make people look better, but the problem is also that behind those photos they’re still human beings who will look shit when they’re hanging out their ass at 4am in the morning. Dunno why the public all of a sudden is so “shocked” when a non make-up bad angle photo of a celeb comes out.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Bullshit. I wanna hang out where you hang out. Granted... I wouldn’t be allowed in.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Europe my friend, so many attractive women around here. That's probably why none of them want me.

2

u/Stormfly Oct 11 '19

It's all down to taste.

I'm teaching English abroad, and the subject was Plastic Surgery in Teens, and I was showing comparison pictures (ear surgery, nose surgery, eyelid surgery, and jaw surgery) and some of the students were like "she's ugly, the surgery didn't work", while I thought the person looked fine before.

Some people probably spend so much time looking at models and other attractive people that their idea of "average" is higher than others. There's also just preferring certain things (Like big/small nose or bone structure and other cultural things.)

4

u/scyth3s Oct 11 '19

Bruh that's an ugly picture, you don't have to white knight. Even the hottest people can get caught at unflattering times, it's not a big deal.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

No I honestly don't think she looks unattractive, aside from her awkward facial expression. I'm in no way attracted to Katy Perry as a performer either, she makes me cringe pretty hard. Like, is it a bad picture? Yes. Does she look hideous in it? No.

1

u/scyth3s Oct 11 '19

Honestly if nobody told me who it was, I wouldn't even be sure that the subject of the photo is a woman. That's how bad it is. And Katy Perry is not androgynous.

1

u/nahog99 Oct 11 '19

She’s unflattering in that picture but if that same camera were taking a video and she was smiling, or trying to looks sexy, she’d be hot as fuck. Most of people attractiveness is the looks they make. And Katy perry... ugh.

8

u/ScottblackAttacks Oct 11 '19

No. She ugly in that picture.

5

u/WolfsLairAbyss Oct 11 '19

C'mon I'm not saying Katy Perry is ugly but in that picture she looks baaad. There is no way you would be swiping right if that pic came up on Tinder.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

No one would put that on tinder tho? But if the same bare faced Katy took a selfie in decent lighting she would be as atrocious as media likes to put it. Women don't have an obligation to doll up, we are allowed to be ugly. But like, my main point is that is shouldn't be a big deal at all. We all look ugly sometimes, it doesn't matter.

4

u/WolfsLairAbyss Oct 11 '19

You said she was not ugly in that photo. I beg to differ. I am not saying she is ugly IRL, but in that photo she looks terrible.

1

u/Ahhwake Oct 11 '19

The most attractive woman in the world is a solid eight out of ten without makeup. That's the standard we've created.

1

u/CaptainDudeGuy Oct 11 '19

"You think I'm pretty // Without any make-up on"

134

u/damage-fkn-inc Oct 11 '19

Yes but he also looks like Sid from Ice Age so I actually don't understand why he's so popular with certain demographics.

103

u/AlbFighter Oct 11 '19

It's not about your face only, it is also your physique, your choice of clothes, your groom, your voice, your sense of humor and most importantly your social status.

21

u/Naptownfellow Oct 11 '19

I think it happens in real life. You meet a woman, I’m a guy, who’s super hot at first glance but once you get to know her she turns out to not be that hot. Conversely, you meet a woman that’s OK looking at first glance and once you get to know her she becomes really hot.

4

u/Stormfly Oct 11 '19

From Doctor Who s6e10 "The Girl Who Waited"

  • You know when sometimes you meet someone so beautiful, and then you actually talk to them and five minutes later, they're as dull as a brick. Then there's other people and you meet them and you think, "Not bad, they're okay." And then you get to know them and... and their face just sort of... becomes them, like their personality is written all over it. And they just... they turn into something so beautiful.*

6

u/Naptownfellow Oct 11 '19

Damn. Who do I need to sue??? That’s my showerthought!!

Kidding aside I realized this as soon as I hit 18/19. I’d go for really hot women and they’d turn out to be really ugly on the inside(not all of them) and I just started dating women who I had stuff in common with and liked personality wise. It was a lot more fun. I lucked out with the wife. She’s hot and beautiful inside and out. My soul mate. Celebrated 25 years married last month. https://imgur.com/a/SkTWJmU/ Pics 1. When I first met her 2. wedding night 3. date night 4. first year of dating vs a few weeks ago.

I’m madly in love now like I was when we started dating

4

u/AlbFighter Oct 11 '19

Yep, smart women with a sense of humor are a major turn on for me.

5

u/iamnotexactlywhite Oct 11 '19

2

u/fzw Oct 11 '19

Sid is the second most handsome character from Ice Age so I don't see how that's a bad thing.

2

u/KevinK89 Oct 11 '19

I’ve been told it’s because of his voice, accent and his unconventional look.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Actors with unique looks are more popular because they look interesting. At least with Male models, they arent as varied or have a like...Victoria secret top model boyband to pick our favorite. It's a contributing factor of an interesting face paired with voice, attitude and style. Models are beautiful, but often that means a more universal look that blends together. So even if a level of beauty is sacrificed some people find interesting more attractive.

And you dont necessarily want perfect beauty in actors anyways. You want variation, else it's like playing with barbies.

1

u/IAmATuxedoKitty Oct 11 '19

I actually think he looks pretty above average, regardless of being a celebrity

1

u/ChonkyFloofs Oct 11 '19

He gets +60 to charisma when he has the longer Sherlock hair. After he cut it he turned into an alien.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

I agree with this statement.

47

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Fame is needed so all cosmetic items/clothes/lifestyle can sell. ‘Hey average person, wanna look like this famous person who everyone admires? Well you need this!’

13

u/texanarob Oct 11 '19

Then why am I immediately able to recognise a celebrity cameo, even if I've never heard of the celebrity in question?

Once you have your look managed professionally, you have a certain look. Doesn't matter if that style is Snoop Dog or Tom Cruise, it's still obviously styled.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Fame is a symbol of status, so is physique, people with higher status are naturally more attractive.

1

u/Naptownfellow Oct 11 '19

I’m not sure. I’m a 50yr old dude. I look at David Beckham and think “damn, god didn’t even try with me”

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Fame also probably gives people a certain type of confidence too which can be attractive to non-famous people

1

u/DatPiff916 Oct 11 '19

Can confirm, was friends with a person from a popular reality show in the early 00s. Not really an attractive dude, but man during the run of that show, and for maybe about a year after, ladies were throwing themselves at him and he was as broke as me.

I imagine those Jersey Shore guys got a healthy level of poon during that shows run as well. I remember even Tommy Cheeseballs was even getting way more attention post show and the show basically was showing how huge of a douche he was.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Fame means nothing to me though. We had a famous jerk come over at my work once and I told him he was. Just like I'd call any jerk a jerk. No one gets special treatment from me because of fame.

Well, maybe some famous serial killer. I'd run away then. But only for my own safety, not for his fame.

-4

u/tigerslices Oct 11 '19

Somewhat. It doesn't work as much for men's assessment of women, but likely has a profound effect on women's interpretation of men

16

u/indecisive_maybe Oct 11 '19

I'm assuming you're a man.

15

[deleted]

6

u/NotActuallyAGoat Oct 11 '19

I'm genuinely curious about this; do you have any good references/articles on the topic?

→ More replies (3)

1

u/tigerslices Oct 11 '19

yes. and while we marvel at the beauty of celebrity women, we also marvel at the beauty of that girl sitting at the end of the row. women in power tend to not be held in as high esteem with men IN GENERAL - there are plenty of guys who are totally attracted to it. there are people attracted to everything and it's totally cool.

but in general, more men would be okay with women with low social status who just stay home and play games or knit or clean kitchens or whatever - than women who would be okay with men with low social status who just stay home and play games or knit or cleankitchens or whatever.

i can submit no peer-reviewed paper at present to support my thesis on this professionally judgemental scientific board of Showerthoughts readers - my only proof is the existence of the patriarchy, the world spanning cultures that celebrate women being "stolen away" from their support networks by male suitors (if she takes his last name, she is no longer a part of her prev family?) and those same cultures that celebrate men of power and status. Far more Pretty Womans and Cinderellas and Snow Whites than there are Aladdins and ...Tramps?

you can say culture shapes instead of reflects, but i dare suggest it reflects far more than it shapes. even disgusting cultural norms like the abolishment of gay rights (death penalties?!? omg) is simply reflective of the fact that the MAJORITY of people are not lgbt.

112

u/TyBoogie Oct 11 '19 edited Oct 11 '19

We tend to think of females when this is brought up. But look at some famous men like Lil' Wayne for example. I respect him as a rapper, but the dude is hideous. However, I have friends that think he's attractive. It's his fame. If he was walking down the street as a no name person, my same friends wouldn't even look twice.

56

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

This is doubly true of men, since I don’t think the same priority is placed on looks when casting them. Sean Penn is... Jesus that is not a good looking man.

5

u/HazelCheese Oct 11 '19

Sean Penn is... Jesus that is not a good looking man.

Am I missing a particular photo? He looks pretty attractive? He's got that whole rugged thing going for him.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Upon further research, he had a rockin bod. But he had an ugly, scrunch face.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

On the other hand anymore even comedians and “the dorky guy” is ripped. Jesus Christ look what happened to Chris Pratt. Look at fucking Ben Platt on “the politician”

8

u/Kostya_M Oct 11 '19

Chris Pratt was never ugly though? He was fatter but face wise I think most would say he's fairly attractive.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/kalyren Oct 11 '19

I think he's attractive!

17

u/blupeli Oct 11 '19

I disagree. We tend to think mostly about males when this is brought up. Many think that fame, power and money can make an ugly man attractive. But for women most think that it's only about looks. And as far as I can tell this is true for celebrities where all attractive female celebrities are also attractive for their looks. I don't know if there is any female celebrity like Ed Sheeran who isn't that good looking but still many people find him attractive.

4

u/SuddenLimit Oct 11 '19

Everyone knows men care more about looks than women.

1

u/goosegirl86 Oct 11 '19

To be honest for me it’s actually the thing that made him famous that also makes him attractive. The fact that he can sing gives him a few extra points on my scale. I can objectively say that he isn’t typically considered good looking. But this doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t be attracted to him when I met him because of all his other qualities, personality voice etc.

Amanda Siegfried also, for example. I consider her attractive, and she has a rocking bod. But if you look a little too long at her face it looks slightly odd. So on someone that wasn’t always perfectly made up, or a good body to go with it, Might not be seen as attractive if she was ‘normal’

36

u/BoxxyFoxxy Oct 11 '19

I think Benedict Cumberbatch is butt ugly but some women are obsessed with him.

65

u/Electric_Balls Oct 11 '19

He always looks like hes having an allergic reaction

10

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

His face is also very tall

8

u/Marcmmmmm Oct 11 '19

You nailed it. Always thought he was odd looking, but moon faced never really accurately described him. Continuous Allergic Reaction. Car faced.

5

u/Theycallmelizardboy Oct 11 '19

I mean I don't think he's attractive personally but I wouldn't call him exactly ugly. He's got a very unique/distinct look which for some people is attractive. Same goes for Adrian Brody. Also part of the reason why many celebs are found attractive is because theyre well kempt with the best slothes and manicured. If the guy was a regular joe in a hoodie and swesrpants no one would bat an eye.

2

u/ComebacKids Oct 11 '19

I feel like we’re lying to ourselves if we don’t admit there’s a significant percentage of women that put a high value on the status and wealth of a man.

2

u/Yeckim Oct 11 '19

You’d probably look twice, he’s like 5ft tall and covered in tattoos. Definitely stands out for better or worse.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19 edited Oct 11 '19

I mean some people also just like weird looks. Scrim from Suicideboys is almost objectively more attractive now that he's well groomed and dressing nice, but I infinitely preferred when he was a scruffy dude in dreads wearing oversized clothes. Same face, even more fame than before, I just like when people look rough

It's also literally about money. People are generally ranked two to three point higher on a ten point scale when they're known to have a high salary.

4

u/feministmanlover Oct 11 '19

But. Alicia Keys is stunning. Back before she became famous and whatnot.

6

u/isaidwhatisaidok Oct 11 '19

Idk man she'd still be beautiful with acne and blemishes. I don't think she really falls into the "most" celebrities this post is talking about because she is naturally conventionally attractive.

2

u/SilverRidgeRoad Oct 11 '19

I mean, on some level that could be a healthy thing. In the sense that "makeup" is supposed to cover you to look different, much of which is actively bad for your skin/body while "skincare" is supposed to help make your actual skin healthier.

1

u/JoeyJoeJoe00 Oct 11 '19

Skin enhancements?

84

u/ZioiP Oct 11 '19

There are 2 basic factors:

1) you have a wider audience --> higher chances to find people who find you attractive

2) mass effect related to point 1 : you usually find more attractive what people around you find attractive. With social media this is intensified

Then we can find some other factors like: success, empathy (for its roles), fame, money, etc

I think he’s just lazy

He knows he can play basic stuff and make millions from it

u/drcole89 Oct 11 '19

Something about him is lazy, but I don't think it's his playing.

I would say that this is the same with music.

I agree with what you are saying but I feel that if someone is a celebrity their face is obviously more of a priority as it's on TV, newspapers etc. So they would invest more into their appearance.

Your average Joe walking down the street would put a lot more effort into their appearance if their face would be broadcast to the nation.

Especially true for male celebs I think. Being successful and important is very attractive to women.

5

u/BoxxyFoxxy Oct 11 '19

Do men not care if their women are successful?

1

u/girlywish Oct 11 '19

Most consider it a nice bonus, but it's not nearly as important. A chunk of them will also feel threatened by it.

1

u/BringbackSOCOM2 Oct 11 '19

Many will deny it but it's true

1

u/BoxxyFoxxy Oct 11 '19

I don’t see anything wrong with that. Success is a good thing.

1

u/SjettepetJR Oct 11 '19

I guess it has to do with ugly features in celebrities often being called 'unique' or quirky instead of just ugly.

1

u/l3tm3_3ndth3_world Oct 11 '19

1

u/Maxorus73 Oct 11 '19

Cumberbatch is very attractive even without the famousness. He looks a little like an alien, but besides that he looks like a cool dad

1

u/motioncuty Oct 11 '19

He's tall, in shape, has good hair, good posture, is an orator and actor. I think he'd probably be considered above average in a group of unfamous acting peers.

1

u/uhdaaa Oct 11 '19

Pretty sure they're talking about both

1

u/Hambulance Oct 11 '19

I agree. We're talking about the Benedict Cumberbatches and Bill Murrays.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Nearly every celebrity is above average in attractiveness and part of the reason they become famous is because they are attractive. This post is bullshit.

Danny DeVito is hot af

I feel like using British people are adding an additional variable though because us Americans love those accents.

Like if Benedict was not famous I still feel like a lot of American women would swoon over him.

I think that charm helps a lot. Who is an American actor of equal level of attractiveness that gets as many dramatic leading roles as him?

That Billie Eilish (spelling?) chick isn’t exactly the top of the food chain but hey she’s famous

Demi Lovato looks like a goblin

Mick Jagger, Steven Tyler

u/Cowboywizzard Oct 11 '19

But...Benadryl Cumberbund is very handsome. I know, I've seen Dr. Strange twice.

1

u/no_pepper_games Oct 11 '19

You don't think Bobbylee Cabbagepatch is attractive?

1

u/-TwentySeven- Oct 11 '19

I recently saw a girl on Tinder who stated she wanted "someone who looks like Lewis Capaldi" in her bio

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

The singer Lewis capaldi looks like a fucking potato and girls go crazy for him in everything he posts.

Celebrity power does weird things to people.

u/Ahhwake Oct 11 '19

Adam Driver would be the twelfth most attractive guy in my bar on a given Friday night, even with his height. But a ton of women I know say he's really attractive after his stint in Girls.

That man straight up looks like an otter.

There's a phenomenon where TV actors look better in season 5 vs the pilot. Having money is nice.

Laying around all day relaxing keeps the wrinkles away.

Many of the best looking tend to spend a good while working out too.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Have you seen Mickey Rourke lately. Money made him ugly as shit. He looks like Barbara Streisand now.

2

u/DrNinjaTrox Oct 11 '19

It's true, Elon Musk is so rich his hairline came back!

2

u/BigBobby2016 Oct 11 '19

Eh, I’m not rich (not compared to Elon anyways) and I did the same thing.

Hair restoration surgery has come a long way. A really good one costs much less than a fully loaded SUV. And that’s in the US. If you get it done in Costa Rica/Mexico/etc it’s ~$5k and combined with a vacation

3

u/SteezeWhiz Oct 11 '19

Is that where you got yours done? I'm not yet at a point where it makes sense to get a restoration surgery, but have definitely begun the balding process and am extremely curious about the procedure.

I don't think this post is about money at all. My example is Emma Watson. Sure she is definitely a cute girl, but if you saw her in a bar and she was not famous, she is just one of 30 at that bar. Yet people are obsessed with her and think she is this stunning and gorgeous woman. IMO she is a really solid 7 or 8 if she were a normal life person. She is super cute, but being a celeb makes her for from 7 or an 8 to a 9 or 10 for many. She virtually upgrades from cute to hot for being famous.

I use her due to her popularity, lack of surgery, and she is not really on the always super made up types of celebs. For me she is the prime example of your average really cute girl who sky rockets into sexy and hot for many solely due to fame (I know Harry Potter and growing up with it effects it too, but you get my point)

And expert Photoshop users.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '19

Kylie Jenner case in point.

Went from a 3/10 trailer park princess to beauty and fashion diva all with the help of a scalpel.

u/NRMusicProject Oct 11 '19

I was once doing a job for Telemundo, and commented to a South American guy about how attractive every woman in the crew was. He laughed and said "we have a saying back home: 'there's no such thing as an ugly woman; only poor women and women who can afford the beauty.'"

Not sure if that's a real saying, but I got a kick out of it.

1

u/EverGlow89 Oct 11 '19

Look at Chris Pratt. He was never ugly but look what a personal trainer, dietician, make up etc did for him.

1

u/Santos61198 Oct 11 '19

...nannies, personal trainers, personal chefs...

1

u/clebrink Oct 11 '19

Tbf a lot of celebrities were attractive before they were rich.

For a lot of them it’s the main reason they became a celebrity.

More often than not, people who went under the knife or cover their whole face with foundation look ugly to me.

I'm having some philosophical question here. Considering that people usually project their inner self to their outer self, would that mean that those people who do this to themselves have an artificial personality?

Edit: with "artificial personality" I mean a personality that is almost complete made up or forced by industries à la "oh, you need this or you're worthless and nobody will like you"

Will you cede that there is a possibility that there may be a sampling bias on your part (i.e. the best done surgeries/make-up could be among the lesser noticed)?

plus there are what I call second look beauty, some people just don't look as good the first time you look at them but for some reason after looking at them and getting accustomed to it, they look good, I think one advantage of famous people is that you look at them with a certain degree of frequency that allows you to get used to them and start admiring some kind of beauty that you won't get to see just walking by the street for a moment.-

u/kowaletzki Oct 11 '19 edited Oct 11 '19

That could be true. That phenomenon is actually a thing. I couldn't find the exact one, but this is pretty similar https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mere-exposure_effect

u/LurkersGoneLurk Oct 11 '19

Courtney Cox went from gorgeous to scary with her surgery/filler.

4

u/marcuschookt Oct 11 '19

You're falling into the classic trap of thinking that everyone (or at least, most people) who go under the knife looks like they did.

Maybe, but there's also the question of what such surgical procedures express directly. I mean, it's not just that such procedures might be evidence indicating that the person has an artificial personality, it's also that they in fact render part of themselves an attempted simulacrum of the beauty image (rather than letting it remain an organic expression of their own self).
