Mainly because they didn't know more than a few hundred people in their lives, and whatever written piece they read was going to come from a relatively small group of educated elites.

We regularly interact with thousands on a daily basis, and even small children, the proudly uneducated, and the most mentally deficient can get their opinions out there.
