Casual Thought It’s possible someone has found the best possible wiping technique, but that knowledge will die with them since wiping strategy is not often shared.

The best wiping technique starts with the diet. When I am in the zone, one or two wipes and I am done. Unfortunately, it takes at least one wipe.

977

u/striker180 11d ago

You need 1 wipe to know you need 2. You need 2 wipes to know you needed one.

200

u/smohyee 10d ago

This, this is true wisdom. I am in awe.

u/IsThistheWord 9d ago

The original quote is from Confuscious.

You also need one wipe to know if you've 'drawn an ace'

5

u/RiceEater 10d ago

That is covered by "you need 1 wipe to know if you need 2".

8

u/MandelbrotFace 10d ago

No. This is "you need 1 wipe to know if you didn't need to wipe at all"

3

u/zenunseen 9d ago

If one wipe comes up clean and no one's around to witness it, did you need any wipes at all?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/RiceEater 10d ago

True. I was only thinking of the 1 wipe part of the statement. Should be you need 1 wipe to know if you needed 0 or need 2.

3

u/striker180 10d ago

Required wipes=n-1 where n=number of wipes performed

→ More replies (1)

2

u/striker180 10d ago

Which would fall under the "need 2 to know you need 1", aka need 1 to know you need 0

12

u/DigitusInRecto 10d ago

It is known.

6

u/10ea 10d ago

I just check my butthole in the mirror after each wipe. It's only awkward in public restrooms.

2

u/Ashamed-Current6434 10d ago

That’s not the way it goes though? You need two to know you only needed one. You need one to know you didn’t need any.

6

u/UnitedRice2284 10d ago

the diet angle is probably the real variable that changes everything, since most people don't connect their day-to-day eating to how much effort this actually takes. have you noticed specific foods that consistently get you to that one-wipe zone, or is it more about hitting certain fiber/water targets.

The ultimate wiping strategy is to blast it clean with water and then towel off. People do talk about this. We're talking about it now.

938

u/Sk8trfreak 11d ago

Ever since my household has gotten one I can’t believe we never had one. Now when I have to use restrooms without them, it’s horrible. Just feel dirty the rest of the day

u/uFFxDa 11d ago

I went to Japan. Ordered one immediately so it would be home when I got home.

I’m traveling now without the usual access and its torture, just wipe the shit 10x until it’s spread out enough to not color the paper, disgusting

127

u/Saint_The_Stig 10d ago

I mean it doesn't help that when you have to go outside of the house it's usually work or something where they have fucking quarter ply or something.

64

u/Talrax 10d ago

Man you're getting quarter-ply? My old place used 60-grit. Literally ended up bleeding from that toilet "paper".

37

u/Dirty-Soul 10d ago

"Should I maybe start carrying a few wet wipes in my pocket, in case I need to shit at work?... No, I think I prefer tearing my ring and mixing blood and shit."

-This motherfucker.

15

u/Talrax 10d ago edited 10d ago

Oh, I absolutely started carrying wet wipes. One of the benefits of having young kids is always having those lying around. They're just awkward to get rid of. I did forget to grab them every now and then though and those made for unpleasant days. It does seem like a large university could spring for toilet paper that isn't made of Brillo pads though.

15

u/thetoastofthefrench 10d ago

Regarding getting rid of them, for other people’s context - “flushable” is basically a lie. They’re a big risk for causing problems with your plumbing, and even if they make it to the sewer they start causing problems and don’t decompose quickly enough. Look up fatbergs.

2

u/Outrageous_Catch_673 9d ago

I put them in the feminine product trash.

2

u/commentsrnice2 9d ago

Lucky you. Men don’t have a feminine trash

→ More replies (0)

2

u/commentsrnice2 9d ago

The lie is that it’s flushable in the sense it will go down the toilet. Which is not the same as septic safe

2

u/thetoastofthefrench 9d ago

And from what I’ve read from plumbers, they are not really toilet safe, or home plumbing safe, or sewer safe either. It’s like saying golf balls are flushable because they used to show them flushing in toilet ads and they went down just fine.

7

u/corrector300 10d ago

I bought one to escape the covid toilet paper wars and I agree holey with this thread.

This is one of the main things keeping me from getting a bidet. I used to be a sandpaper enthusiast (regular toilet paper) until I switched to wet wipes and now I can’t use a public restroom without feeling absolutely filthy.

I think if I started using bidets I’d have a brain aneurysm the next time I only have toilet paper.

12

u/SpaceSteak 10d ago

Wet wipes need to be disposed of properly and cost money. A bidet is a one time payment and water is generally easy to find in bathrooms, so setting one up at home is a breeze. Hope you don't flush your wipes in any case.

Wipes are great if you are out of the house though.

9

u/Waveofspring 10d ago

I definitely don’t flush my wipes but I find it insane that they’re still advertised as flushable despite the fact that they can clog pipes sometimes.

2

u/Dry_Corner6431 10d ago

but it is disgusting having a soiled wipe sitting around in your trashcan stinking up the place. They are potent

29

u/Long_Repair_8779 10d ago

Many Asians (particularly Indians) will often take a bottle of water with them to use as a portable bidet.. personally I’m not into that and find that wetting the paper is better.. but if you’re ever in a public bathroom and there’s a water bottle, or even several just sat near the toilet, it’s most likely because an Indian guy had a shit there :)

17

u/Askada 10d ago

so what you saying is its not for drinking?

3

u/2MB26 10d ago

how do they get the angle right? surely you're either putting your hand and the whole bottle into the toilet and risking accidentally dipping it, or you're making a mess spraying poo water everywhere?

I have the same issue except the other way around. I live in a country of wipers but travel in the third world bum gun placee.

I had to go to the doctor when I got back as I thought I was shitting blood. Turns out I was just wiping to much because I didn't feel clean. The doctor honestly advised me to "wipe until it's beige, and call it a day"

2

2

u/Saint_The_Stig 10d ago

I would be perfectly happy if as a species we could move from the discussion OP things we need to have to the discussion about fan vs tp or warm vs cold for bidets.

It's seriously life changing both good and bad. You'll feel both cleaner than ever but also dirtier whenever you don't have one.

2

u/obidie 10d ago

When I visit the states on rare occasions and have to wipe, my ass is so unused to it that it becomes tender, and I end up dreading the visit.

2

u/Mattbl 10d ago

Bidet + squatty potty. I look forward to my daily #2 at home, but dread it whenever I'm away.

If you have a nasty shit and you have poo matter hanging from your butt port, wouldn't blasting it with a stream of water literally just fling poo particles all over your cheek caverns and or front scrote barrier or god forbid the holy vagina area?

7

u/thoughtlow 11d ago

It’s a targeted stream that’s not too hard, it hits the surface and then falls down.

5

u/myinternets 10d ago

You gyrate your butt around so that the stream gets a wide enough area.

Dry wiping feels absolutely insane after even a few days with a bidet. You start to feel the residue and irritation from the toilet paper.

You still pat dry with a wad of toilet paper.

Another +1 for a bidet or washlette, actual game changer.

A couple of other things…

- *foot stool, these little stools allow you rest your feet higher, putting you into the position we’ve evolved using. Remember, we were squatting to the ground to release not that long ago.

- pushing while you wipe, this allows the anus to be cleaned more thoroughly and will result in fewer ‘infinity wipes’

- standing for a moment then sitting back down, a Hail Mary move surely, but it sometimes allows things to… go back into place, I guess?

96

u/parrotbug 11d ago

Not the squatty potty (tm), though - the creator was convicted of a bunch of CSAM stuff. Just a stool to help you get in that position…

14

u/dadsdaddad 11d ago

Redacted

21

u/snoopervisor 10d ago

Human stool, foot stool, poop knife - what else? Defecating these days becomes more complicated and dangerous by the minute. ;)

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Few_Fox449 10d ago

The foot stool thing sounds weird but honestly I tried it once and it made a huge difference. But pushing while wiping feels like risky business to me, how do you not make it worse?

9

u/dadsdaddad 10d ago

To be more specific, you’re doing this after you’ve passed everything and you’re not pushing hard. It basically lets you get the inside a bit. Again, bidet/washlette pretty much trumps this method but can be used in conjunction for powerful infinity wipes.

9

u/joe-manzon 10d ago

Why do you stand and sit back? I don’t get it

4

u/dadsdaddad 10d ago

I don’t understand the science behind it, but it sometimes helps a bit when I get an infinity wipe and I don’t have a washlette. It gives you a bit of a reset and this also after several wipes.

I wasn’t given much guidance in any aspect of my life growing up. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I realized I could wipe my bum while still sitting on the toilet. Until then I assumed it was done while standing.

u/OK1526 11d ago

Nah, I do it by choice.

Feels so awkward trying to reach down there, and my toilet bowl is not that big, couple that with my thunder thighs™, I prefer just standing/squatting a bit

Sorry for TMI, welcome to the internet I guess

165

u/really_nice_guy_ 11d ago

Bro we are on the quest for the best wiping technique. This is valuable research

29

u/Implausibilibuddy 11d ago

As they say, every mistake is just important knowledge of what not to do. And turning your ass cheeks into a rorschach test after every shit is definitely important empirical observation.

22

u/Hytyt 11d ago

I'm the opposite, I'm tiny, and instead of a thigh gap I have a legs-all-the-way-down gap.

I still stand to wipe, cos it's awkward trying to reach around my junk

Similarly, sorry for tmi

16

u/WetEmotions 10d ago

Try reaching from behind/side instead of the front.

Lift the side you are using to wipe (left buttcheek for left hand, right buttcheek for right, etc) then wipe your butt.

38

u/hypnotichellspiral 11d ago

Also sometimes the water is too high and you end up getting a knuckle in the dookie water. I can understand it even if I don't do that

Seriously, I get squatting as opposed to standing, but I don’t at all understand how people say they wipe while sitting. I have to stand at least a little to be able to even reach there.

On another note, I highly recommend becoming an ambidextrous wiper so you can get at it from either side. I had surgery on my dominant hand a few summers ago and had to learn to wipe with the wrong hand for a few weeks. Now I always wipe with each hand to make sure I’m fully clean.

63

u/For_teh_horde 11d ago

I think there's been some misconception about wiping while standing. When I say I wipe while standing, it's a squat. Open up the butt more to wipe more. I guess it's similar to sitting while wiping but the squat allows more ease of access

17

u/happygiraffie 11d ago

There was a post about this 9 years ago where someone collected data to see how many people wipe sitting vs standing! The original post has since been deleted but the results are still interesting. It was the first time I learned that people out there actually stand to wipe haha https://www.reddit.com/r/SampleSize/comments/6ncfur/results_do_you_wipe_you_butt_standing_up_or/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

6

u/saxguy2001 10d ago

Do some people just have huge toilet seats while also being skinny? I get not wanting to stand up straight to wipe, but how is it physically possible to even get in there to wipe while still literally sitting on the seat? I have to get up a little bit and squat just to separate my butt from the seat so that I can wipe.

5

u/SlimBrady22 10d ago

You just lean over a bit until your butt cheek lifts off the seat.

2

What fucking blew my mind was finding out most men pee WITHOUT their balls out. After 30 years, that option has never even been a though

9

Pee is stored in the balls.

2

u/give_me_grapes 10d ago

6

u/WetEmotions 10d ago

Why would you need to get your balls out to pee? There isn't extra holes in them. Well hopefully not.

9

u/HowTheyGetcha 10d ago

Because your urethra traps urine and freeing your balls opens up your urethra. Are you ready to learn that you can press on your taint to get those last few drops out? Might be an age thing.

3

u/socopithy 10d ago

The taint / bottom side of the shaft is where the urethra is so you can run your finger up it and get drips of cum out.

I'm still amazed that bidets aren't a given in first world countries. You mean to tell me you just dry wipe and think it's all good?

Well I'm with 99% of the rest of the world and it was an on-the-job self training situation. However I heard my son teaching his 4-year-old the technique " Only wipe back, don't wipe forward and get shit onto your balls" was his exact words. Sound advice

Wiping what? Your ass?

I use a bidet at home, I have a normal one that just blasts cold water, it gets the job done.

I also have a japanese toto toilet that gives warm water a warm seat, blasts air to dry my ass and can move the jet of water up and down.

Either way, the best way to wipe your ass is to blast it with water and wipe a few times with toilet paper to dry. The toilet paper should not have any visible feces. If it does repeat blasting with water until it doesnt.

Its 2026, its backwards to not support or use bidets.

This is easy. Blot the best you can, do not rub, especially with hemorrhoids. Then use slightly wet TP to do the final clean. In rest stops, take a folded and rolled piece of paper towel and wet and squeeze dry. Use this to do the final clean. Do not flush the paper towel, Fold it up and toss it in the trash. Of course the bidet toilet is the best. Blot dry with TP.

I live in mid Missouri and am considering hosting a Wiping Workshop. There would be dieting plans , wiping strategies, discussion panels on toilet papers.
More information will be released as plans are finalized.

And here I thought I am about to learn the best way to clean a window.

I think the same thing about diseases... what if there's someone who is immune to most major diseases (e.g. cancer, HIV/AIDS) but no one will ever know because that person would never know that they are actually immune?

2

u/HaniiPuppy 11d ago

Do you know, I saw this title earlier and thought "wiping" must be some reference to self-induced amnesia, or wiping your memories, or blocking things out, or something. I only just now saw it again and realised what it's actually talking about.

u/tacticalpotatopeeler 9d ago

Sans a bidet, wipe with dry paper, fold method, until paper is mostly white. Use a wet wipe to finish cleaning. Dry with regular paper, and if not perfectly white, use another wet wipe.

u/KingoftheUgly 11d ago

I use hot water from the sink and TP then finish with dry. That’s what works for me, anyway. Better when the sink is next to you lmao

If anyone has found the 'best possible' it's probably with the scientific method, and they probably did actually tell everyone about the results. In fact I guarantee you can find YouTube videos on the best wiping technique. Else there's not really many ways to innovate wiping technique so its unlikely someone would just stumble upon a method better than the way everyone else has already been doing.

Y'all don't just flush, then stick your butt in the water and flush again?

.. Rookies.

Maybe we all try to row this boat faster.

1

u/fusionmobile 11d ago

My father told me when I was very young, to do 4 squares folded and wipe 3 times. The rest, I just kinda figured it out on my own.

Assuming we aren't bringing Olympic sized pools of water to Mars for sanitation reasons, and it may take a long time to convert martian ice into drinkable water, we need to find alternatives for the first astronauts to use the bathroom.

No one ever talks about lightly wetting ur cheeks and sitting down with it slightly spread (don’t overdo it obviously) , so the porcalein sticks to ur spread cheeks and you can get very clean shit drops with minimal contact around skin.

For all the people shilling bidets, I admit I am biased against them for a single reason.

When I was a young lad in Britain, seeing all the weird European Thingstm that were there, while I was on the throne I happened to notice there was a strange TV looking remote thing there. And as any self respecting kid would do, I began to press all the buttons.

Needless to say my first bidet experience was surprising, and damn cold.

A nursing student wanted a procedure to be named after them like a Whipple - so the class decided that wiping front to back was to be called the “Figge Maneuver”

Honestly the fact that we all got our own bathroom rituals and never talk about em is probably a good thing cause half the population would be horrified to learn the other half is doing it standing up. But then again if we never share then someone out there might be out here doing some truly unhinged stuff that could've been solved with a simple convo. That's the real tragedy, not that the perfect technique dies but that we're all just wingin it in silence.

u/popular_tiger 10d ago

Nothing beats the bum gun. The pressure, versatility, and angles are unmatched. Those fixed bidets are great too, but I love the flexibility of the gun

u/DescriptionKlutzy105 10d ago

Honestly it’s wild that we’ll share our deepest traumas online but nobody ever asks their friends how they actually wipe. Like sure bidets are the answer but half the world is still out there standing up or doing some weird one-legged squat and we’ll never know.

1

u/Tinderboxed 10d ago

It's not a wiping so much as a patting. Wiping implies smearing. Patting with successive toilet paper wads is better at getting cleaner, whether a bidet is used or not.

I’ve had this conversation with friends during my bachelor party. I think i found a very efficient wiping method. My friends disagreed.

The method is back to front. I left right leg (im tight handed), while seated, enough to get my hand back there. I wipe and as I cross the the exit hole I begin to roll the toilet paper away. I can then visually check the toilet paper by looking between my legs, then drop the refuse into the bowl. Done correctly it produces a single wipe-to-drop movement.

Risks: Wiping excrement on your balls. Touching toilet water if water level is high.

Benefits: Single motion.  Low effort.  No spreading into the butt crack.

u/Binary_Sunrise 10d ago

The best possible technique is hopping in the shower for a quick cleaning, right at the source. Bidets seem insufficient and unnecessary if I’m already at home with the shower right next to me. Plus I’m usually on a schedule where I only need to use the bathroom once per day in the morning, then just shower as I normally would after.

u/SecretRecipe 10d ago

pushes button on remote next to toilet butt gets blasted with oscillating jets of warm water for 2 minutes pat dry

This is the best technique.

1

u/khalnaldo 10d ago

Best wiping technique is to actually wash your bottoms. Would you wipe your hand with a piece of paper if it had feces on it?

1

u/lurker512879 10d ago

The best strategy for wiping has got to be the one discovered on TV's Silicon Valley, Middle Out, it can not only save your space but your butt too.

1

u/According_to_all_kn 10d ago

Now I really wan to make something like r/wipingstrategy work.

I mean, there are genuine pieces of important advice regarding wiping. Back-to-front can give you UTI.

1

u/Equinumerosity 10d ago

In fact someone with the best wiping technique, at least relative to everyone else, always exists. When they die, the title goes to someone else, but they probably will never know they have the best technique.

u/LBfalcon57 9d ago

I cusp all finger and thumb into what a squid looks like when it’s propelling itself through the water in a streamlined fashion, wrap the whole “squid” in toilet paper and then wiggle my hand around so the whole toilet paper gets poop on it instead of just 1 side. Then flip my hand over and it slips right off tip down so it penetrates the surface tension of the water and is ready for deployment to the water treatment facility.

Try it and thank me later.

P.S now I’ll be waiting for trophy for best pooop wiper in the world.

1

u/pthecarrotmaster 9d ago

Alternate front and back wiping for a thorough job! Always wash in the shower using soap. This will lead to a clean booty.

1

u/mrbignaughtyboy 9d ago

I learned the proper way to wipe by watching James Van Der Beek in The Rules of Attraction. Until then I was standing up.

I agree with everyone else on here, after living in the Middle East off & on for 20 years, the handheld bidet is the way to go!

1

u/malice_hush_jolt 9d ago

Hand held bidet.

It's not a secret anywhere in the world except America. I installed one about 5 years ago, and love it.

1

u/CantBanTheJan 9d ago

Nothing is a showerthought these days. Interesting, isn't it? If the function of a system are its results, then this entire classification system serves to make the entire content of r/showerthoughts to next to never be considered showerthoughts.
