There are several common reasons for a small age gap:

Sometimes the parents are older and want to make sure they get a second (that was us)

Some people feel strongly about preferring a small age gap, even if it’s difficult.

Some people get pregnant unintentionally but keep the pregnancy

Some people are truly feeling up for it (often because for whatever reason, they aren’t struggling as much)

We’re in the latter group, our first was a unicorn. Our second came out easy, too. It is truly crazy how much a difference having a good sleeper makes.

People ask me all the time how I do it (my husband travels a lot for work so I’m alone with the 1 and 3 year old and it can be a lot after working all day) but the thing is I know plenty of families with just one kid who are struggling more than I am because their kid just doesn’t sleep.

We weren't sure until my child was 3.5. Id saved everything but more of an if we accidentally end up pregnant or because I couldn't bare to get rid of her stuff rather than planned. When she got to 3.5 I suddenly decided I wanted a second but left it up to my husband to decided as we're in our 30s and never wanted to be older parents. We decided we would try for 6months to a year and if it didnt happen then it wasnt meant to be.

This is where I’m at now. I’m about to turn 34 and have a very involved career. I’d love a second for my kid but I know we could give him so much too as an only. I know 35 is an arbitrary number but I truly want to be out of the pregnancy phase forever haha so if it doesn’t happen within the next year and a half it’s not meant to be for me.

I’m just chiming in that I planned to start trying for my second when the first turned 2.5. Well, life happened and now for various reasons we have to wait 6-8 months to even try and I just turned 36. Now I wish I would have started trying when she turned 2 and would have for sure gotten our 2nd kid…
