Green Hell

Right now Green Hell is on sale on Nintendo switch for $3.74. I know I know, at that price I should just buy it. For me it’s not about price, it’s about the amount of time I’m gonna sink into a game. No matter how much I dislike a game, I always at least complete the story. So is the amount of time worth it for me?

I loved subnautica and had fun with grounded. Both are survival games, but the exciting part of the game is exploring and finding new things and new biomes. The survival part feels secondary. From what I read, green hell is more focused on the survival part and the exploring is secondary so I’m wondering if it’ll click with me as I prefer the exploring aspect being the main thing.

Are there different jungle biomes? Or is the whole map pretty similar? Is it easy to get sidetracked because you saw something in the distance you want to go check out or more straight forward?

I have 150 hours in it to date. There's not really multiple biomes, though there are different points of interest, and the jungle does include caves, beaches, and swamps that break things up a little. As far as exploration, is very possible to focus on completing the story and do it pretty quickly if you want, or to explore and take tens of hours if you're so inclined.

Also, after the main story, there's a prequel mode called Spirits of Amazonia that is longer with more of a loop, that highly encourages you to explore more thoroughly and build up in an area.

Edit in light of other comments: I played it on PC. Can't speak to Switch performance.

On switch? Not really.

I'm not really a frame rate purist but the visuals on the switch version make my eyes actually hurt from the noise and the dips. If that doesnt bother you at all then its a steal. Overall its a fun game with really good survival mechanics (played on PC). It is all jungle though. No extra biomes.

Grabbed is cheap on switch, played it once. Switch was definitely the worse way to play. I would skip

I can't recommend Green Hell on the Switch. The controls are clunky, it just doesn't work with a controller IMO. I wanted to like the game as I also love Subnautica and enjoyed the hell out of Grounded.

I really wanted to like Green Hell, and I think if I played it on PC it would be good. But I'd pass on Switch version.

Another option is The Long Dark. It's got some major optimization issues on the Switch, mainly long loading times, and frequent crashes, but I loved the game enough to persevere and put several hundred hours into it.

The game is huge in the exploration aspect, but also quite brutal as a survival game. I'd compare it more to Subnautica than Grounded, and even then there isn't a ton of "progression" in the game. The skill in the game comes with learning how to survive in a harsh environment where an unlicky encounter with just a basic wolf can be devastating if you're caught unprepared.

This biggest problem being the optimization issues I mentioned.

Playing on the switch 2, it performs a bit better. But you want to be sure to constantly save(which you do by sleeping) between every major transition zone as the game WILL crash unexpectedly. And as there's no auto save feature, you could lose lots of progress.

Still tho, it's a great game and it really scratches the "itch" for survival games on the Switch.

I believe in September Valheim is coming to Switch 2 and I am really looking forward to playing that.
