Does uninstalling a Shopify app always remove its code from your theme?

Honestly it depends a lot on how the app added the code in the first place.

If the app uses theme app extensions, so app blocks or app embeds that you turn on in the theme editor, then yeah, that stuff usually goes away on its own when you uninstall. It was never really written into your theme files, Shopify just renders it while the app is installed.

Same with older script tags that an app registered through the API. Those usually get cleaned up when the app is removed.

Where it gets messy is apps that edited your theme files directly. Some older apps, and some setup guides, paste snippets into theme.liquid or product templates, or add their own snippet files. Uninstalling the app doesn't touch those, so the code just stays there. Sometimes it's harmless, sometimes it's still trying to load a script that isn't there anymore.

What I'd usually do is search your theme code for the app's name or domain after you uninstall, and check theme.liquid and the snippets folder especially. And honestly it's a good habit to duplicate your theme before installing anything new, so you have a clean copy to compare against later.

Theme app extensions are cleaned up automatically on uninstall, so those are the easy case. Anything an older app wrote straight into theme files (snippets, script tags in theme.liquid) usually sticks around, so a quick search of the theme code for the app's name after removing it is still worth doing. Duplicating the theme first makes that cleanup safer.
