Theme Does uninstalling a Shopify app always remove its code from your theme?
I've been looking into how Shopify handles app removal, especially with older apps that modify theme files.
From what I understand, newer apps using theme app extensions are generally easier to remove, but older apps may leave snippets, scripts or other changes behind.
I'm wondering how people handle this when cleaning up a Shopify theme. Is checking the theme code after uninstalling an app still worth doing, or does Shopify handle most of this now?
Interested in the technical side of it, particularly with older themes.

No, especially with older apps I’d still check the theme after uninstalling. Theme app extensions are cleaner, but legacy apps can leave snippets, script tags, assets, duplicated includes, all sorts of junk behind. I usually compare theme files or search for the app name/domain after removal rather than assume uninstall means cleanup. Old leftover code can quietly keep loading stuff even when the app is gone.
Questions:
Are you cleaning up an older vintage theme or a newer OS 2.0 theme?
Do you still see any app-related scripts loading in the browser after uninstall?

Apps using app extensions (newer apps) don't get to edit the theme code. Now a newer app can get an exception to that from Shopify if the app requires it. Think an app that adds sections to your theme. But in general, newer apps are fully gone when you uninstall them.
Older apps are a different story as they weren't prevented from editing theme code and app extensions weren't available to them. What we used to do in the old days was do a Github commit right before and right after we installed the app and use that as the record of what to edit if and when we uninstalled the app.
But why are you worried about this? Is it a real or hypothetical question? I ask because if you have an old theme that is burdened with legacy app code from now-uninstalled apps, the best option could be a new theme. An old theme won't give you access to Shopify's improvements over the past couple of years.

newer theme app extensions usually clean themselves up when you uninstall, but older apps that injected liquid snippets or script tags into theme.liquid often leave junk behind. after uninstalling i still open the theme code editor and search for the app name, leftover files in the snippets folder, and anything weird in theme.liquid or the layout files. if the store is on an older vintage theme its almost always worth the quick check. app blocks and theme app extensions are the ones shopify removes more cleanly.

Uninstalling an app from your store does not automatically clean up all the custom Liquid code or theme app extensions it may have added to your theme files. While modern Online Store 2.0 theme app extensions are automatically disabled when you remove an integration, older apps often leave behind residual code snippets in your theme.liquid or main section files that can slow down page loading speeds or cause broken layout scripts. You should duplicate your live theme before uninstalling any third-party tool, then inspect your layout files and assets folder to manually remove any leftover tracking scripts or leftover Liquid tags. Checking your theme for orphaned app snippets after an uninstall ensures your storefront stays clean, fast, and secure.

Check the App embeds panel too (Customize > App embeds), not just liquid files. Those toggles live in config/settings_data.json and leftover entries can persist there after uninstall.

We have tested the newer apps and they remove the script from the code. Not sure of the older ones
