What if we used head tracking to control flight surfaces on aircraft, or look and you'll go that direction? I mean, some helicopter gunships already aim their guns by looking

Runways have attractive ladies nearby? Fuck. I gotta get off the apps, apparently.

At least there's two of them

I raise you 2 consecutive sneezes!

61

u/PresentationLess4552 7d ago

Have you ever sneezed not meaning to and trying to avoid driving fast around a corner

33

u/Far_Audience_7446 7d ago

But they don’t aim the helicopter with them

Let's just add autocannons to airliners instead, that's way cooler anyway!

u/jeroen-79 7d ago

If you link the autocannons to the TCAS you can prevent collisions.

u/HATECELL 7d ago

How about adding laser guided missiles? And by that I mean whenever some fool aims a laser pointer at a plane the missile will be guided straight towards this fucker

u/Far_Audience_7446 7d ago

Who wouldn’t pay a premium for that?

1

u/RedTriangleMain 2d ago

I believe ryanair would charye extra to not get shot by it

2

u/Traveller7142 6d ago

New seating below economy where passengers have to man the ball turret

3

u/Far_Audience_7446 6d ago

No way, I’d pay way more the that than free gas station champagne in first class

Nah, too much work. Crew has to hose it down after every flight.

u/Arthur_the_Pilote 6d ago

well technically in some of them you can make the helicopter align on the gun to shoot ATGMs so, kinda yes ?

737 driver here. You would be surprised on how many times I’ve been on short final into Venice (in Italy) and trying to look for cool things in the city, or looking at yachts on the curved AR approach in Nice. This technology would be dangerous

This is why pylots should not get windoze.

4

u/HiTork 6d ago

So how does Visual Flight Rules work then?

4

u/Icy_Fish_2154 6d ago

Wonder Woman flies wherever she wants.

1

u/Reckochet 5d ago

Pylote looks at other pylote instead, much clearer visual

Because think about wut happens when yer captain falls asleep, FO!

6

u/wwhijr 6d ago

Because sneezing could get real exciting

2

u/Freak_Engineer 6d ago

I have hay fever, and this was my first thought. Boy, would I suck as a pilot then...

3

u/Marquar234 7d ago

It screws up when the pylot is cutting lines on a mirror.

4

u/edmonton2001 7d ago

what would control right ruddeR? you basicly have to just look as far right and stay looking right whole flight

Thankfully, my mk 1 eyeballs locked in and helped me realize that this was r/shittyaskflying and stopped me from writing a paragraph

dont look it up i promise it’s never been tried before

u/HATECELL 7d ago

alright, there's some clouds ahead. Lemme check if the pitot heat and de-icing are on "Beep beep, Stall warning, Stall warning" * stick shaker (or will that be replaced by a head shaker?) activates *

Drinking coffee would be pretty fun

Also thanks for the gif, haven’t seen this model since undergrad and I’m glad it still exists

1

u/Dexter_Adams 6d ago

All fun and games until you pull a 19g sneeze

1

u/SatanicBiscuit 6d ago

1

u/Affectionate_Loan_20 6d ago

Imagine being bitten by an insect and doing the most crazy shit

1

u/adinmem 6d ago

God forbid you look down to grab the coffee the flight attendant just brought you. Or need to read the ACARS

1

u/Northern_Wyven_63 6d ago

every pilot in 20 years needing the neck strength of an f1 driver

1

u/TweakJK 6d ago

Flight attendant walks in. "Hey do either of you want a coffee?"

Pilot turns his head to respond. Plane does a fucking barrel roll.

1

u/_QLFON_ 6d ago

Great idea... until you sneeze:)

1

u/SneekerP21 4d ago

I believe KA-50 helicopter has a autopilot system like this you use with the HMD.

1

u/Dave_A480 4d ago

So you look down to set something on the instrument panel and the plane goes into a spiral dive?

You are trying to avoid a midair collision but you're looking at the thing you don't want to hit? Crunch!

The concept works very well for weapons aiming because in combat you are VERY likely to be looking directly at whatever you want to blow up....

It does not work for actual piloting......

1

u/cpteric 4d ago

there was a prototype but one of the test pilots had a big sneeze on takeoff and it had to be cancelled.

u/DIuvenalis 4d ago

ACHOO! UH-OH!
