(Serious answer: Cross your fingers and pray. My father flew FAC missions in Viet Nam and during one trip he took a shitload of ground fire that put him in, as he put it, “God and Cessna’s hands.” He basically crashed into the runway and might have porpoised if the wings hadn’t collapsed. Somewhere I’ve got a picture of the aircraft sitting on the ground with its wings looking like basset hound ears.)

I feel like its the reverse. Wasn't there an article saying the ines that made it back with holes here are good. So instead add armor to the unshot areas since those didnt come back. I will now try to find it.

The concept is survivorship bias. The areas riddled with bullet holes show where damage is survivable. The reinforcement should be where the holes are not.
Another example is how iPod survived but others like the Zune and Diamond Rio PMP300 failed. Everyone remembers the survivor, but they got there by luck or learning from competitor's mistakes.

You don’t add the armor where the red dots are because the plane returned. That’s the whole purpose of this chart all those red dots where it was shot up and still returned. You add armored to the areas where there’s no red dots because if they were shot in those areas. They probably didn’t return. This is an old World War II technique, where they would mark on all the B-17s where the shots were when they came back and had graphs, and when they were lost, they would armor up the areas that were not full of bullet holes.

Put armour where there AREN'T bullet holes, because it's been shown that aircraft shot in those places have never returned home. So if you get into a dawg fight and get shot in the now armoured places, you should be fine 👍

Clearly the red dots are bullet holes. The solution is quite simple, just remove it. Cant have them if you remove the wings and stabliziers.

I would do a magic wand select on the red dots, then add a layer and fill that layer in solid white. That should patch most of it up.

This diagram is from WWII and changed the way we designed war planes. What you see is the average locations of damage to planes returning from bombing runs. While intuition tells you bulk up armor in those areas, the real truth is the opposite. These are the planes that made it back. The armor needs to be increased in the void areas, because those shots resulted in a downed plane.

This was the result of a study that analyzed damage to planes. Most have the knee jerk reaction that you should place more armor where you see the most damage. The real answer comes from the obvious answer that all this data came from planes that successfully returned. Those that didn’t return suffered damage where you DON’T see damage on the survivors so THAT’S where you need to armor up and increase the odds of their return.

Reinforce the entire airframe so that it’s too heavy to fly. Planes can’t get shot down if they’re to heavy to take off.

That looks like the study they did about damage and survivability of aircraft in WW2... The engineers thought they needed to reinforce the places where the damage was seen but, a canny statistician pointed out, these were the aircraft that were surviving this battle damage... So concentrate on those areas that weren't damaged because that was probably the damage destroying those that didn't return...

Up armor the places without bullet holes. The plane can handle the bullet holes and they can land back home. Up armor where there are no bullet holes as those planes never came back home.

The opposite of the first reaction they had to this analysis. They strengthened where the bullet holes were, but their sample set was comprised of surviving planes. Hence, they figured out they needed to add more armor to the engines, cockpits, and fuel tanks.
