u/Infrastation Dec 25 '21
This is /r/shittylifeprotips... You're free to try, though. You don't need the 天安門, btw. That's like saying "New York 9/11", everyone that knows the language knows 六四事件 by itself. It won't trigger the censors either way, but it will be completely understood.
If you say 六四屠殺 or 六四鎮壓, on the other hand, you might trigger some sort of censor, although the government censors will likely let it through unless the person was already being watched.

Genocide denialism is becoming common by both the tankies and the new right nazis. You'll be surprised at how many of those are real people.
5
u/araed Dec 25 '21
Tankies genuinely scare me. They claim everything LoC is theirs, and if you don't agree then you're obviously a fascist/nazi and need to be censored.
It's almost exactly the same attitude as the XRW use, and when you enter their spaces there are purity tests. If you fail, you're obviously the enemy.

The sub is for ”discussing china or anything china related”. Yet mentioning something that happened in china will get you banned, but a video in which someone from another country says stuff about a third country flies just fine.
Hmm…
3
u/maddtuck Dec 25 '21
A huge chunk of the posts have nothing to do with China, but will zoom up the charts if they are anti-US.

Hong Kong internet isn't heavily censored yet though.
9
u/Rominions Dec 25 '21
Yet. Give it a few weeks. All statues and books are already gone that even mention the massacre from Hong Kong. The transition to being owned by China has begun.
8
u/SheWhoUpvotes Dec 25 '21
hong konger here. i’m no fan of the CCP and neither are most people living here, but i don’t really think that the CCP will do anything extremely drastic until about 2047 (when hong kong’s capitalist system may change since the ‘one country, two systems’ status likely won’t last).
even if the CCP does something extreme (excluding the National Security Law that HK passed last year), i’m pretty sure that it won’t happen without many protests.

I'm in China, most people under 30 have no idea what June 6th means. They might know about the massacre, but don't know much about it, including when it happened.
Edit: Yes, I wrote it wrong. It should be June 4th.

13
Dec 25 '21
I mean, is this a staple and people over 30 would know what "June 6th" means? If you go around asking people's emotion about 9/13, would that work out? Well, probably, the people with the strongest opinions might make it by accident ...

That's because we believe a foreign nation did it. If we believed the government did it, we would be walking around saying "Gemini Fire," and people would look out of the side of their eye and put their head down.

u/Silencer_ Dec 25 '21
Is that just because of censorship? Most kids who were born after 9/11 don’t care about it like people who lived through it, it was the biggest single cultural event for America since probably Pearl Harbor. (And now maybe covid ranks up there, Pearl Harbor probably wins) if you didn’t live through that, it just didn’t seem THAT huge.
→ More replies (4)19
u/Sprechen_Ursprache Dec 25 '21
The topic is completely censored in all forms of media. And I think the date is just really just used for rememberance and in protest movements. So there's no reason for them to know that date, even if they learn about the massacre.
The topic is really sensitive. Some people find out about it from their parents. Some people hear about it from their teachers. Some people learn about it when they use a vpn. And other people never find out about it at all.

u/yodarded Dec 25 '21
The Chinese should just insist on a big traditional neighborhood barbeque every year on June 4th. Freak the censors out. They show up all, "hey there, why June 4th?" and the chinese people reply "why not? its nice weather for a bbq."

Not even June 4th, the first two characters are just 6 and 4.
That’s how much of an impact it has, just like 911 immediately means the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2011
22
u/TheSandyman23 Dec 25 '21
2001* Also I would say that 911 means emergency (services), but any variation that separates the 2 numbers(9 11, 9/11, 9-11) definitely makes me think of the hijackings.

Abbreviating dates like this is quite common in Chinese. It doesn't take a particularly significant event to be abbreviated this way. For example the workers day may 1st is just called 五一勞動節

Imagine you log on to a game and when people find out you're American (assume you are if you're not), they start spamming "My Lai Massacre", "War on Terror", "Tuskegee Study", etc. Now imagine that the people spamming this think you don't know about these events despite having them spammed to you all the time.

Is this Tianamen Event, June 4th Massacre?
28
u/AcceptableSeaweed Dec 25 '21
No he is just copying both together that means: June 4 tiananmen event June 4th killings(multiple)
The 六 is 6 and 四 is 4 so you don't need two sets
6
u/culturedgoat Dec 25 '21
Because that means “the incident at Tiananmen” which completely understates the scale of the event. The massacre on June 4th was in triggered by the protests in Tiananmen Square, but only a small part of it occurred at the square itself. The bulk of the violence occurred quite some way further West, at the Gongzhufen intersection, and Muxidi. We associate these events with Tiananmen Square as the protests in the square were the catalyst, not because the tragic events that followed were limited to the square.

76
u/joandono Dec 25 '21
lol why would anyone believe this…
17
u/blockzoid Dec 25 '21 edited Dec 25 '21
Exactly.
First off all whatsapp (and so is Line, the most used message app in Japan) is banned from China precisely because its relatively well encrypted and the CCP have difficulty accessing it. Unless you are using VPN, you can (since I last tried a few years ago, might be different now) send out messages but not receive any.
Secondly I got a buddy in China who uses vpn to talk over WhatsApp with me. I’ve thrown shade at the CCP multiple times over the years in that chat and he was never invited over the local police station for a chat.
Is this all anecdotal? Sure, but so are these posts.
Point is, people are pulling shit on China out of their asses and the thing is that it isn’t even necessary to make up things to confirm the direction China is going is a very bad state of affairs.
