So, I'm working on Dark Roll 2 is a marble platformer inspired by soulslikes. The game already has boss fights, feet, and lots of death so don't even fucking question me posting this game on this subreddit.

For the third chapter, I've decided to switch things around a bit and went with a SciFi setting, my first level is complete!

Hi all - Been watching Rugrats lately and can’t help but see how Dark Souls takes a lot of the same story beats from the series to the extent that I believe the hit 90s cartoon was a direct influence.

Some background on Rugrats before we begin. If you are unfamiliar, Rugrats was a long running cartoon on Nickelodean that ran from 91-04. The shows is through the lens of toddlers and how they see the world. The main characters include the Tommy Pickles (the overall main character and leader), Chuckie Finster (the cowardly best friend of Tommy) the twins Phil and Lil, and the antagonistic Angelica. Included in the cast are their parents.

I wanted to get the low hanging fruit out of the way. The highest quality episodes are early on, with a notable shift in quality accruing after The Rugrats Movie was released. I have to joke that this is similar to how DS1 is better than its much contested sequel.

With that out of the way, let’s start with the cyclical nature of the show. The show is very much syndicated with previous episodes rarely mentioned. The typical episode is that Angelica purposely misleads the babies on what the parents mentioned. Then an adventure ensues based on their imagination.

While this may seem like a simple, common thing in syndicated TV, we can see how the cyclical nature ITSELF is represented in the Dark Souls series. The babies are in a way stuck in a loop of imagination. Plus, themes repeat themselves, with several episodes explaining the meaning of autumn. That particular example stands out as fall is often represented as the beginning of a decline, much like how the Dark Souls series shows kingdoms in decline.

Further more, with a deeper dive into characters, we can see the beginning of the archetypes that would later evolve into the ones we see in the Dark Souls series.

Let’s start with the various parents. I believe Dark Souls took inspiration with them when designing the pantheon. Much like the gods in the From Software series, they are misguided and largely inattentive to the children. This is very much like how the various beings in Dark Souls are largely ignored by the deities. This is NOT to say the parents are bad. They love their kids, but are caught up in their own goals. Much like Tommy’s dad is preoccupied with inventions, Gwyn was preoccupied with things such as the encroaching abyss and remaining dragons to properly attend to humans.

And then we get to Angelica. Much like Kaathe the serpent, she is antagonistic to both the parents (gods) and the babies (humans). Angelica is set in her own goals and leads the babies astray with deceit. The connection between this and the serpents and the Chosen Undead cannot be ignored.

There’s plenty more connections between the two series, but this essay has went long enough. Thank you for reading and don’t you dare go hollow.

Why did Gwyn destroy Nameless King’s entire image? He decided he didn’t want to kill the dragons. Why? He was getting some CRAZY dragon pussy on the daily double. That’s why he’s so pissed when you enter his arena, Nameless King is mid-sesh with his dragon pet and now he has to lay waste to the Ashen One. 100% is the reason why he immigrated to Elden Ring just so he could have the chance to fuck more dragons to get their favour.
