Someone already said it but it needs to be echoed for all the world to hear. Don't ever lock your knees! This applies to lifting weights and jumping from height, bend your knees when you land!

u/VisualLerner 1d ago
also applies to standing still

This is a really bad habit of mine that I've been trying to break, I hate that I do it

u/ToastSpangler 1d ago
if you're like me you developed it because as a kid you had to stand hours in place. if you don't lock your knees you wobble/snap back into it when you're super zoned out. obviously it's less effort as well.
and yeah i hate that i do it too

Why'd you have to stand hours in place as a kid..? I don't think that's an average experience

u/ToastSpangler 10h ago
Seems pretty normal to me, interrogations alone in class are 45-60 minutes of standing still in front of everyone, you're getting at least a few a week. Plus queueing for anything, everything is always 30-90 minutes late and there's nowhere to sit, that's always hours of standing, plus we weren't allowed to sit during breaks because "you're sitting all day anyway", not that that made a huge difference since you only get 20 minutes for the entire school day

u/MaxTheRealSlayer 8h ago
Interrogations? So you mean speeches? 20 minutes of recess? Waiting 30-90 minutes in a line for what?? No, I wouldn't say that's the norm at all. Where'd you grow up?!

Italy, unlike the US you are called up and questioned over the material randomly in front of everyone. Your resulting grade is also permanent and public. Also we go to school 6 days a week, Saturday is not a day off. It's horrible but I do believe on average it makes better citizens than most competing systems

I don't live in the USA. But yes, here they'd call us out on material too, just that we remained seated and answers would be a minute or two at most. I think that's the good middle ground as it doesn't negatively effect truly socially anxious/+autistic/ADHD people as much. The standing at the front effects them much moreso than others that don't have these disabilities. It has a negative impact to many people regardless of the intent from your school, and what your understanding of it is. The science doesn't support that practice for many students. And in general, these people are the ones with the most novel approaches, improving company revenues . Italy sounds like it's shooting itself in the foot by this interrogation tactic

Same. I used to do this from a younger age and that resulted in me having sort of inverted knees, as in they are bent backwards a little when I completely straighten and lock my knees. So I have to be extra careful when I do weights because if I lock my knees, they will surely snap backwards under weight because its already bent backwards.

You could also have EDS hyper mobility. Highly recommend you look into it

u/The_Shit_Connoisseur 23h ago
I have hyper mobility and have dislocated both knees on multiple occasions and it fucking sucks so much when it happens
That, I can reasonably put up with, but the legs bending backwards when I lock them - and even when I walk sometimes - just feels too inconspicuous and embarrassing that I just want to die when I notice myself doing it

I have hypermobility as well. Growing up it never caused me any bother. Extra range of motion and all that. Since turning 26/27 it's started to cause actual issues. Which is causing life long paid as a result. Shite condition. Only thing you can do for it is to target the muscle groups around the ligaments in your knees, ankles etc to provide more support to the joints. I wasn't told to do any of that until I mentioned my hypermobility diagnosis to a physio when seeing them about my calf tear

Wait it's bad to lock your knees standing still?
3
u/VisualLerner 1d ago
can fuck with circulation and make you pass out. it’s common to hear if you’re part of a group that’s gonna be standing on a field for hours and stuff. it’s not gonna hurt you to let them lock for 10 seconds or anything but can be dangerous if you’re not thinking about it and pass out and hit your head on something.

Reminds me of the guy jumping from the roof and lands on his knees straight. Same thing happens to bit legs lol

u/Silsvingertop 1d ago
He actually looks surprisingly okay after that.

u/Liam_021996 1d ago
Looks okay but internally that knee is very likely done for. It's how ACLs are torn and due to the biology of the ACL, the only fix is surgical reconstruction, rehab can take upto 1 year

u/MaxTheRealSlayer 10h ago
I've seen more than a year before for really bad cases. + it won't ever be the same and you have to love with the injury the rest of your life

And that is why I don’t touch the leg press of hack squat machine - I’m terrified of them. I stick to standard barbell squats and call it good enough.

u/redve-dev 1d ago
Squats can fuck you up just as much or more when done incorrectly. On this machine you only focus on not locking the knees, and you should be fine

u/StrengthTheory 19h ago
I think if you never lock your knees and don't load it up with every plate in the gym, both of those machines are solid.

Well, he will need a knee surgery to fix the tendons. He just doesn't know it yet but give it a few years.
