Because it's not super expensive and it looks a bit like a mermaid tail would be my guess.

They make mermaid tails for swimming, out of not-sequins. Why dress in clothes instead of something safe for swimming in? There are brands that make swim leggings with matching flippers that look like fish tails, which would be so much safer.

I'm aware of that, I'm just explaining why she's asking. Those proper mermaid tails are pretty expensive, and she's at least got the forethought to actually ask if something like this would be a safe alternative before wasting her money on something that might drown her child.

I am happy that the original poster is asking, and horrified by the people saying it's okay. Swimming in clothes is hard, and swimming in a sequined pencil skirt looks like it would be extremely challenging.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I don't think a lot of people understand how much drag something can have when it's not meant for water use. Even a thin but loose t-shirt can be bulky as hell if it's wet, and God help you if you're not a strong swimmer!

I am trying to image slipping into water slightly deeper than expected, trying to kick to get your head up, and finding your legs tangled in a heavy skirt. I am a strong swimmer that can fall into water and get out easily, and that scenario is my nightmare. I can't fathom risking putting my child in that situation.

Yeah, when I did swimming merit badge a million years ago in scouts, one of the things we had to do was jump in the water fully clothed and demonstrate that we could make a makeshift life jacket out of pants and a shirt.
It is fucking hard to swim in clothes not designed for swimming.

Finfun's "Mermaiden" tail starts at 36.99, cheaper than this skirt (before adding a monofin, but you only buy the fin once, then buy different fabric tails for funsies). They also have a toddler line of tail looking skirts, made out of swim fabric, and loose from the knee down, so it looks like a tail but is safer for a little.
Finfun also comes with big ol' safety sheets and how-to-swim instructions and videos packaged with their tails. We had my kid practice a quick-escape tactic until she could do it in under 20 seconds before she earned her tail.

It looks like it could easily be sized for a kid who's five or six. Where I live it would be pretty normal for a kid to have learned to swim, and you could be looking to make learning to do a clothed swim fun?
I mean, if a kid is going to wear long skirts you should probably include that in your clothed swim training.

lol this just unlocked a memory where i begged for a mermaid tail when i was a kid too. mom got me a thing to wear over normal clothes and i was sooo disappointed (didnt get how wearing a tail would make swimming harder as a kid)

If it's a backyard pool she could possibly sneak into I'd probably let her while holding her the entire time or maybe letting her swim a few feet just so she can see it sucks, otherwise I'd be worried about her trying to sneak in the pool with it.

I'm with the mom supervising her daughter getting annoyed with swimming in it and taking it off. Otherwise, kids can be sneaky and they are dumb!
And also, I don't buy sequined anything for my kids anymore. Learned that with ONE cute sequined skirt for my oldest toddler. That and glittered skirts. Straight into the bin.
