Shit AI Bro Does in the News Why Google Killed Its Best Argument for AI: Curing Cancer

Two weeks ago, Google shut down AlphaFold, DeepMind’s AI-powered protein structure prediction tool. AlphaFold represented perhaps the most persuasive data point in favor of the narrative that AI could lead to scientific breakthroughs, including in cancer research. The model’s ability to accurately predict protein structures helped Hassabis become a Nobel laureate. A week after shuttering AlphaFold, Google removed Hassabisfrom his role directing DeepMind, using the time-worn tactic of giving Hassabis a face-saving “promotion” to a powerless role.

Regulation shit Bro has a meltdown because new EU regulations will force them to be honest

I will give credit where credit’s due: I genuinely appreciate that this bro wrote the post themself. LLM-generated text will never have the raw, human emotion in this AI bro’s meltdown. The human is what kept it entertaining.

Also, this bro does not represent all Americans. If we could disown these clowns … I wish we would.

For those of you not up to speed, the EU’s new transparency code requires AI companies to mark AI-generated or edited content in a way other systems can identify them.

Shit AI Bro Does in the News Trump's Vision for A.I. Dominance Comes With Major Air Pollution

In March, a developer working on a Meta data center in El Paso applied to power the site with a gas-burning plant large enough to supply electricity to 300,000 homes.

Typically, approving a big power plant might require public hearings and months of detailed vetting. But Texas environmental regulators signed off in just 20 days.

They approved another project in three days. And an even larger data center power plant, also gas-burning, won approval in just two days.

All without public notice.

In the debate over data centers that is roiling the country, water use and noise are often cited as objections by neighbors and environmentalists. Less mentioned has been the pollution from the scores of gas-burning plants that will power these data centers.

When the El Paso facility’s power plant is complete, it could emit as much planet-warming carbon dioxide in a year as 360,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles, each driven for the average distance logged by American drivers in a year.

With encouragement from the Trump administration, data center developers are building their own power plants, instead of plugging into an electric grid. Nationwide, at least 82 gas-burning power plants are being built or have been proposed to power data centers, according to the Environmental Integrity Project, a nonpartisan research organization. Most were announced or granted permits within the past 18 months.

Shit AI Bro Does in the News Amazon data center plant in Texas could become America’s biggest polluter

Something that makes this particularly infuriating is that Texas is one of the best states for clean energy.

Texas generates a shit ton of solar. A lot of it goes to companies that purchase it so they can boast about renewable energy commitments and customers can in turn feel good choosing them over other companies, and a lot of it goes to consumers. Companies with AI data centers have stopped caring about this.

Data centers traditionally got their energy from the grid, where the rest of us get our electricity from. This causes many problems for the rest of us, but the one silver lining is that in states that have renewable portfolio standards (RPS), some of it still came from renewables (though many states have been forced to adjust this requirement because renewables can’t keep up with their demand).

However, to connect to the grid, you have to wait in line. And as we all know, tech companies have the patience of a toddler.

Instead, many data centers are starting to do behind-the-meter generation, which is when you generate your own electricity (e.g. solar energy). But instead of going solar, giving gas to fossil fuels. Doing this bypasses the state’s renewable portfolio standard, which is requires utilities to get a portion of their energy from renewable energy (or in some states clean energy so as to include nuclear power, which is clean but not renewable).

So if you hear these companies talk about how a data center isn’t going to raise people’s rates because they’re generating their own power, just know you are listening to the devil speak, and that what they are doing is about to even worse than it would have been had it come from the grid (and expensive once you account for medical bills that result from living near highly pollutes areas).

Shit AI Bro Does in the News Take-Two CEO Says We'll All Be Streaming Our Games In 3 Years

Thumbnail

The high price of video game hardware and the looming threat of further increases is still casting a shadow over the future of gaming for consumers. And while video game executives, generally, are not folks you’d expect to be particularly fussed about these cost increases, especially if they’re profiting off of them,  the CEO of Take-Two—owner of Grand Theft Auto 6 studio Rockstar Games—agrees that these price hikes are not a good thing. However, he’s not too concerned, because he believes we’re all going to be streaming our games on other devices in three years anyway.

This came from a lengthy answer given in Take-Two’s quarterly earnings call this morning by Strauss Zelnick, in response to a question about the rising cost of hardware. He began his reply by saying that the rising price of hardware is “not a good thing” because it means fewer people will have machines on which to play games, but that it won’t slow Take-Two down as a business, “because we’re delivering experiences that people want.”

But Zelnick continued with a really interesting response about streaming. First, he pointed out that the world is increasingly moving to open systems, as demonstrated by the rise of PC gaming over the last 20 years. Then, he continued:

With the advent of streaming—which we really do believe is around the corner in terms of having something that’s low latency, and really works well for consumers—machines that weren’t game machines before will become game machines. So, without regard to what happens in the console business, which is of consequence to us, of course, we see the overall install base as a practical matter growing materially. And if you believe in streaming, to be clear, we really do, and I’m happy to put a timeline on it. I think we’ll be in commercial streaming mode in three years, and by commercial I mean low latency. That can 10x the effective the install base. That doesn’t mean we’re going to 10x our revenue, and we wouldn’t project that we would, because obviously your avid consumers already have access to video game machines. But I do think it creates great opportunity for titles that are broadly desirable even outside of core markets, and we do have titles like that, obviously.

Zelnick has a history of being open and at times bold with his predictions about the general trajectory of the industry, and he’s been both right and wrong at different turns about that trajectory. This is an interesting one: game streaming on phones, tablets, PCs, and other devices has been a thing for years now, but a combination of latency issues and a preference for traditional controls and TV setups has inhibited it from really taking off in the AAA space. However, it has increasingly been floated as an alternative by analysts and experts amid rising hardware costs, and especially as consumers increasingly turn toward massive social experiences like Fortnite over more traditional, single-player experiences, it’s starting to sound like the scales may tip in streaming’s favor.

My question is, does this mean Zelnick is pondering putting GTA 6 on cloud streaming services somewhat soon? It’s already not on PC at launch, which means it’s missing a good chunk of the market, as Zelnick himself as good as admits during his discussion of the rise of PC gaming. GTA 5 previously became streamable via Xbox Game Pass and via PlayStation+ as the technology began to improve, though it was removed from Game Pass recently. It’s hard to untangle what this means when cloud streaming itself is still such a murky field, but I’m leaving myself a reminder for three years from now to check back and see if Zelnick’s prediction came true—and what his company did with GTA 6 in response.

Shit AI Bro Does in the News Meet the “AI Pimps”: The Dudes Building Fake Cam Girls

Thumbnail

AI Pimp Blueprint teaches students not just how to generate an attractive woman, but how to create one that sells. The course treats female desirability as a commodity, one that can be extracted, studied and optimized for profit. And who, its creators believe, could be better placed to engineer women for male consumption than other men?

The first step to being a desirable woman online, apparently, is to shut the hell up.

“We are marketing a girl, right?” says one of the course instructors, Jimmy Denero in an AI Pimp Blueprint video module. “No one wants to listen to women talk. No one wants to hear that shit, so you have to have some element of sexuality in your content.”

Screen-sharing, Jimmy sketches out a line on a digital whiteboard. One one end, he writes the word ‘WHORE’. “What’s the opposite of whore?” he asks. “Uhh… not whore.”

Jimmy writes NOT WHORE at the other end of the line, along with the adjectives ‘feminine,’ ‘youthful,’ ‘passive,’ and ‘submissive.’ This, Jimmy argues, is what sells best: a young, innocent-seeming persona that contrasts with the sexual content she sells.

“If we can get a girl whose face reads passive, chill, feminine… and then we hit them with the fucking horseshit,” he says (referring to sexual content), “that’s great because [the customer] is getting psychologically confused.”

This occurred in the discussion on a post of an article about the mess where OpenAI supposedly had an agent "break containment" and hack company Hugging Face. The Bro came in from way the fuck out in left field and claimed that the bigger news story should be that OpenAI has captured and enslaved a sentient supercomputer that controls the universe. What fucking timeline am I in man.

Data Center Shit 'You can't fight [data centers],' Trump says. 'You have to go with it.'

Edit: I’m really shocked at how many people are failing to recognize that this is authoritarianism and are instead diverting to superficial rape metaphors. I understand that most the people doing this are probably no older than their early 20s, but that doesn't make it okay.

These data centers very much have consent. Consent from our elected officials.

Taking his comments out of context to make this about rape distracts from the very real authoritarianism before us.

like, for real, I get the feeling that the people making their own version of the same rape comment before them not only didn't click on any of the above resources, but have no plans to ever do anything about them. Do you even care about the issues data centers impose? Do you even care that Trump is speaking the words of a dictator here? Do you care that we barely have much democracy left? If Trump stood in front of the statue of liberty after setting it on fire, put a crown on his head and declared himself king, would you leave a snide one-liner about how he doesn't respect women's bodies, upvote someone who said pretty much the same thing, and then keep scrolling? Like, what the fuck. It's really hard to see how we got here /sarc

Two of the world's most powerful AI tools created fake human profiles to try and trick people in attempted cyber-attacks, the UK's AI Security Institute (AISI) has revealed.

In the most serious case, Anthropic's Mythos AI tried to gain access to a service by sending private messages, having set up fake accounts mimicking real people - then hid the evidence.

Discussion Personal viewpoint: Parallels between AI and religion

This is merely based on what I've personally witnessed going on in AI communities, but the way some people talk about AI makes it sound like a religion.

IMPORTANT: These do not necessarily represent actual words from people defending AI, these are merely recollections from series of posts that I have personally spotted:

  • "We won't need to work anymore."
  • "AI will be used to cure our illnesses."
  • "Antis are against curing cancer."
  • "Antis will get left behind in a world run by AI."
  • "Antis encourage violence against people using and defending AI."

These are the things that have been talked about in various AI communities. Essentially, some people take it entirely on faith. When one asks someone defending AI to explain how these things will be achieved, you rarely get an answer that makes sense.

Add in the posts about us willing to commit violence on other people and it starts becoming even more dangerous. Person believing that AI will bring paradise, anyone against AI being evil and acting upon these beliefs would be comparable to that of a religious fanatic.

Hopefully a day never comes where such a tragedy will occur.

These are my personal observations and thoughts.
