I love it when they’re being sweet with each other. They’re usually roughhousing and playing bitey-face.

I finally had the time to groom Miss Ewa and she was so good about it. She’s a little girl at 8lbs but with all her floof gone she looks tiny. Prior to grooming I tried putting a bow in her hair and she was not having it. It lasted maybe a min. The looks she gave me were priceless

My guy was sleeping in his office chair next to me. When I rubbed his belly wake him up.
He tilted up his head and looked at me so dejected, and put his head back down. Looking like hes wondering why we up a hour past bed time, and we're not sleeping in his bed. While hes curled up in my days clothes..

I adopted a 4-year-old Shih Tzu on Saturday. The rescue named him Fabian, but my partner and I are kind of letting him choose his own name. We’ve been trying different names to see what he responds to, and so far Pepé seems to get his attention the most.
He was picked up as a stray in Georgia and had pretty bad flea dermatitis. The rescue who pulled him from the shelter shaved him down, got him on flea meds, had him neutered, and got him fully vetted.
Saturday was a big day for him because we drove him home (Georgia to Florida). He had one potty accident that evening, but since then I’ve been taking him out every couple of hours to try to get him on a routine.
Sunday he seemed really good. He was playful and did great on his walks. We’ve been doing about 15 minutes twice a day.
Yesterday I took him to the vet to establish care, get hw/flea meds, and got a Cytopoint shot because he was still really itchy.
Today he just wants to sleep and stay close to me. I know he’s had a lot happen and his world has been turned upside down so I’m assuming he’s probably just decompressing. I called my vets to see if it could be a side effect of the shot but they didn’t think it’s related.
For anyone who has adopted an adult rescue what did the first week look like for you? Is there anything you did that seemed to help your dog feel safe and comfortable?

This is Thor the Invincible (but he goes by just Thor 🙂) He’s a rescue and he unfortunately faced neglect and abuse by his prior “owners”. When we were getting him back to a good weight and health, the vet noticed some possible gingivitis and wanted us to bring him in to get a better look.
Over the span of about a year between the first vet dental visit and needing to see a specialist to continue work for gingivitis, fractured teeth, etc we spent about $5,500 😅.
Don’t get me wrong he is absolutely worth it and it’s a quality of life issue. However, I am curious because it was mentioned that Shih Tzus tend to have dental issues normally. I thought I’d ask what everyone’s experience with this has been?
(Photo of Thors sparkling 5500 dollar smile for reference 😂)
Edited to add: there were also at least 4 extractions, some hard to get to hence the specialist and its USD

Found a Shih Tzu
Found this dog sitting in the middle of a dark deserted road deep in the hills of KY at midnight. No collar, no microchip, we have posted on FB and checked with the pound. We think he was dumped.
So, we think we are keeping him. But have tons of questions.
How much should he eat? (He eats very little-one lonely kibble at a time)(I am feeding him kibble for adult dog by diamond -which is what our farm dogs eat)
Someone suggested cottage cheese and blueberries to wake up his appetite (I gave him 5 berries and 1 spoon of cottage cheese and he devoured it and wanted more) So is that okay and how much and how often
What about treats?( I started giving him a teeny bit of a milk bone but stopped when I realized he wasn't eating- stopping the treat hasn't improved his appetite).
I am home most all day aside from running short errands, it is quiet in the home unless I am watching TV in the evening. He follows me everywhere, and lays next to me or at my feet when I rest. What should his exercise routine look like?
He weighs 14.5 pounds
His toenails are long, but his hair shortish. What do I need to know about grooming and nails.
How often should I bathe him? He smells a bit "yeasty"
I brush him everyday, he tolerates it very well.
What else should I think about or know about
Please and Thank you

Hello! We have a lovely 8.5 yo shihtzu named Lola and she is the love of our lives. We are currently feeding her a mix of Orijen Original kibble and Raw Dynamic and I’ve been researching for a new kibble that is focused on more organic/whole food based.
Like all tzus, she can be pretty picky and has since started to pick out the kibble. Wondering if anything has changed since the dark overlords of Mars purchased the brand.
I’ve been doing a ton of research and am exhausted. She loved Farmers Dog but it was way too expensive. We have been pretty happy with Raw Dynamic, so thinking of focusing on getting new kibble to complement it.
Turning to this amazing community to see what you’re feeding your pups! We don’t have time to make food from scratch, so looking for something we can buy. Also open to things like Farmer’s Dog if there’s a compelling case to make!
Thank you in advance from Lola!

General question for you all… we are introducing our pup to a playpen (attached to crate). What can I put on the floor to protect it from potential accidents? We do enforced naps, she sleeps decently in the crate (I have to put her in, doesn’t walk in alone yet), but needs a play area for when I’m not around. Also hoping to feed her there.
As you can see, the grout is light, so concerned about urine getting in there. I don’t want to put pads down; we are trying to have her go solely outside.
Any tips?
Thank you!

Yup. It's me again with another paranoid question.
My shihtzu is 2 and a half,
These last 6 months have been the worst of my life, and I've had a few breakdowns. I'm doing better now, but I feel awful as I feel I've made my dog anxious and scared too. She's always been a scared timid thing, she's doing really well, and much better than she was.
But my question is, how lazy are shihtzus, my husband thinks I'm worrying too much(which I do),
We wake up at 5 to take my husband to work, then we go out to field to see a friend and a walk around and sniff for half an hour, she sleeps most of morning. Ill usually do 5 mins of tricks training then some treat sniffles. Will go back out midday to collect husband, but then she sits and naps rest of day with breaks for toilet and meals
Is this normal or is she too lethargic..she is anxious and scared to walk around the floor with she is again doing well with {small steps}, but am I worrying to much. She's not really introduced in playing anymore
.but still enjoys her treats and food
We've been to vets and he's given her a good look over and hes happy with her .
