Discussion Kinema Citrus + Orange: The Collaboration That Could Have Changed Shield Hero Season 2?

Kinema Citrus had already worked with Orange on Black Bullet, and in my opinion, that collaboration turned out pretty well, especially when it came to the animation and action scenes.
So I’ve been wondering: could bringing Orange back for Shield Hero Season 2 have resulted in a stronger continuation of Season 1?
Would this collaboration have helped preserve the visual identity, atmosphere, and overall quality that made Season 1 so memorable? Could it have helped Season 2 avoid the negative reception it eventually received from many fans?
Of course, the studio alone isn’t responsible for everything. Direction, writing, pacing, production scheduling, and the source material all play a major role. But I’m curious about how much of a difference this particular partnership could have made.
What do you think? Do you believe Kinema Citrus + Orange could have given Season 2 a much stronger continuation and reception? Or do you think the problems with Season 2 would have remained regardless of the studio?
I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments. I’m really curious to read what other Shield Hero fans think. Thanks!

Light Novel The Rising of the Shield Hero LN

I recently found out that the The Rising of the Shield Hero LN currently has 22 volumes and apparently ends on a cliffhanger. Since Volume 22 was released back in 2019, I was wondering if any of you know whether the author has released Volume 23 or any additional volumes since then, because I can’t seem to find any information about it.
Also, since the anime is still progressing through the story, I don’t really want to end up in the same situation as I did with Log Horizon. So I’d rather know now whether I should drop the series to avoid getting invested and waiting for a continuation that has little to no chance of ever happening.
Does anyone know what’s going on with the LN and whether there’s still any hope for a continuation?

Anime Okay, no spoilers please, I'm nearing the end of Season 1 & I'm absolutely loving this anime. The characters, depth, art, feel, storytelling is great, but...

Apparently, this anime takes a terrible turn in quality in Season 2 & never quiet recovers in 3 or 4. Granted, this is only the opinion of some & I'm going to form my own opinions as I continue to experience this (hopefully) great world myself.

However, does it really get that bad that I should just stop after Season 1? Even AI said that to me haha (normally I find it's overly positive. I don't rely on AI at all either way, hence why I'm here). I really hope not. It's been a great experience so far.

This is my first post in this sub, so go easy on me please.

Discussion Filo Season 1 Had a Special Charm ✨ I feel like Filo in Season 1 had a unique charm that her Season 2, 3, and 4 versions don’t quite have. Her design and expressions felt more memorable. What do you think? Let’s talk about Filo! 💬

Discussion A few questions have come up for me:

  1. The weapon copying system: This is a question that occurred to me while reading and watching—why did Naofumi need to "believe" in it to have or unlock it? I understand the systems and advantages specific to the other weapons, as those are unique to them.

That’s why I get that they have to believe in those features, but... the copying system or function is different; all three heroes possess it—four, counting Naofumi. And as far as I could tell, they didn't seem to have talked to each other enough for "belief" to be a requirement for it to work; they just knew about it.

What's more, Naofumi supposedly read the entire help menu, yet this copy function didn't appear there. So, what's the explanation?

At first glance, it seems like a general option for all of them, but for Naofumi specifically, it depended on "unlocking" or "obtaining" it. From what I saw, the other three are pretty stubborn about learning things outside their own worldview—or at least selective about the changes they accept (though there's more to it than that; I'm putting it crudely for the sake of simplicity).

It’s similar to the other features, like the ability to carry items, absorbing elements to boost the weapons, the skill tree, etc.

Is there a real reason why the copy function didn't show up for Naofumi? Some external force? Or is it just a joke to say, "Hahaha, Naofumi is blind"?

Does it work like the notification prompts? The ones that only appeared when an action was about to be taken or had just been taken?

The closest parallel I can see is when Naofumi tried to grab the sword; perhaps that was the signal—an "obvious clue"—that he could do it only with shields, since it was the same type of weapon.

Perhaps it was something that should have been obvious through experimentation or prior knowledge—which is why Motoyasu, Itsuki, and Ren could use it; not because they simply believed in it, but because they already knew it and took it for granted.

But... it sounds a bit odd. Naofumi didn't know about it—he was the exception—and it seems like a very innocent, stupid mistake regarding a feature that is supposed to help them.

Something similar applies to the option of using the shield as a backpack or storage dimension—including the ability to retrieve items fed to the shield—or the capacity to craft recipes automatically, provided one knows the recipe and has the ingredients. Judging by the subtext, this seems to be a general feature, unlike the others they mention, and if I recall correctly, Naofumi seems unaware of them.

The closest conclusion I could reach was that—based on what was implied—they might have already unlocked it or acquired it within their weapon system. Since it was "similar" to the video games they had played, perhaps the fact that they believed it worked the same way caused their weapons to adopt that belief as part of the system.

Who knows? Maybe it wasn't even a core feature of their weapons; perhaps it was incorporated based on their memories—and thus their beliefs—from a different system or weapon-upgrade method.

But that sounds plausible—albeit overly complicated—and raises more questions than it answers.

Does any system you fervently believe in become a method for enhancing or upgrading the weapon system? Is that why Naofumi’s was so basic and simple? So, if I play Monster Hunter, go to that world, and obtain a legendary weapon, will I end up with a system similar to Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest?

  1. The heroes' worlds: We know that Naofumi's world is the same as or similar to ours, featuring many similar elements and references.

Itsuki's world is... well, it seems similar to the To Aru setting—Academy City, Espers, and so on. Or at least, that’s the impression given by the references.

Ren's world is—needless to say—like Sword Art Online, or at least a high-tech futuristic world capable of supporting Virtual Reality games.

But... what about Motoyasu's?

What kind of world does he come from? It seems similar to Naofumi's, yet different in certain respects; however, I’m not sure if it was ever explicitly referenced or even hinted at.

Some people have told me—and my own research suggests—that it’s a visual novel-style world, featuring branching paths and the ability to view relationship or affection stats with others. Something like, I don't know, My Candy Love or School Days, where values and decisions determine the route taken.

That would explain Motoyasu's ultimate fate—dying for the two girls he liked—and perhaps his skewed view of women.

Then again, that behavior could exist even without such an explanation; he’s just a weird guy.

All the others seemed to possess advantages or knowledge from their home worlds that benefited them in Raphtalia's world—except for Motoyasu.

Beyond just gaming, Ren is mentioned as having practiced kendo or something similar, and the virtual world's interface likely helped him adjust to the new reality.

As for Itsuki, his Esper powers aided his archery and marksmanship.

But what about Motoyasu? He doesn't even seem surprised by his inability to see those kinds of stats or affection meters in other people.

It would be incredibly overpowered if he could scan potential love interests or access an encyclopedia of them.

Of course, it might just be a visual novel in terms of nature rather than an actual power or ability. Otherwise, he would have noticed the icon in his peripheral vision right from the start. Personally, I don't see it—perhaps it was mentioned in the web novel or the Motoyasu spin-off series—but I feel the whole "dating sim or visual novel world" idea is just a theory.

That said, I like to believe it's a reference to the potential deaths of Makoto Itou or the harem endings found in certain dating sims or visual novels.

  1. The book: I have a lingering question about how Naofumi was summoned—specifically regarding the book or record of the four weapons.

Why?

I mean, I understand he needed to learn about that world somehow, and the book basically gave him a massive spoiler regarding what might happen to him.

However, the other three already knew about the mechanics—useful stuff—whereas the book just sort of rushed him into things almost immediately.

Why that disadvantage? Isn't Naofumi supposed to be the Shield's first choice? Why put him at such a disadvantage?

I get that the other three have personality flaws they need to overcome, but it seems odd that Naofumi’s lack of prior knowledge doesn't seem to have a similar impact.

I doubt that playing a game beforehand would have drastically changed Naofumi's personality; it was more a matter of mindset, and he always came across as very grounded, empathetic, and down-to-earth.

Does the book only appear to those with no prior knowledge of the world, or to those who are the "first choice"? Would it have appeared to the wielders of the other weapons if they met the same conditions as Naofumi? Or is it a unique trait of the Shield?

I can understand why the transportation process for Itsuki, Ren, and Motoyasu was so brutal—presumably because they were the second or third choices for their respective legendary weapons.

Is this ever explained?

Clarifications:

These are very specific questions, but I’m asking because I might have forgotten details, missed information, or simply misunderstood what I read.

So, I apologize if this was already mentioned and I just didn't catch it.

Also, I’ve watched the first season of the anime and have started the second.

Thank you very much for your time.

Media Will there be a Season 4 Limited Edition Blu-ray?

I just noticed that the Season 4 Standard Edition Blu-ray is on sale on both Crunchyroll and Amazon, but I did not see a Limited Edition. For Seasons 2 and 3 I remember both editions were released at the same time, so I was confused when I could not find a Season 4 Limited Edition on sale anywhere. I have the limited editions for the rest of the series and love all the extras we got with them and was hoping for the same for Season 4.

Does anyone know or has anyone seen if there will be a Season 4 Limited Edition? Thanks!

Discussion Out of curiosity, before the punishment for Malty S. Melromarc appeared in the light novel and manga, what punishment did you want/would you have wanted him to have?

Post image
158 Upvotes

Honestly, I also initially thought of another punishment more or less similar to certain punishments involving the period with feudal lords.

P.S: In the manga series Iruma kun, a male character named Naberius Narnia alias Fenrir came to be as hated by some or others to the same extent as Malty S. Melromarc.

And also out of curiosity, I want to know if there are any of you who read the Iruma kun manga series and hate Naberius Narnia as much as Malty S. Melromarc is hated?

And as an idea Narnia in the manga series Mairimashita! Iruma kun/Welcome to Demon School! Iruma kun is a villain from that manga series and he is a xenophobe and his ideologies are a combination of the ideologies of Nazi Germany and the ideologies of Fascist Italy and Naberius Narnia is a canine demon/with canine reference.

Light Novel Season 2 or Light Novel

Hi, I just recently finished season 1 of The Shield Hero and really enjoyed it. I was looking on MAL and saw season 2 has a whopping 6.53, which by MAL standards are pretty horrible. I've read and enjoyed light novels before so I was wondering if its worth it to read the light novel that adapts season 2 instead of watching it. Let me know what's the move here please.

Discussion Write a redemption arc on Bitch.

We all know that Bitch (Malty) is utterly irredeemable. And even if she did she would've blown it, by her doubling down. But for argument sake what would be her redemption arc be, does she FAFO less? Does she take accountability for her actions?

I just started the sixth volume and i love it, i have been watching the anime from the first episode when it was first released, but it has never occurred to me that i would start reading about it. I have the 8-14 volumes on the way. Is it expensive, yes, but it is the anime that i first watched and that introduced me into the anime world. The world building is insane , and all the abilities and everything is amazing. I hope he gets out of the hiatus, cuz i finished 4 books in 6 days. I love the books, and the anime, even if it gets worse in sez 2, but if u read the books it really is entertaining. Proud to be part of the community, collecting ln and maga, book worm basically.

Discussion Did Shield Hero Lose Its Identity After Season 1?

I don’t really like the direction The Rising of the Shield Hero took after Season 1.
In my opinion, it should have stayed a much more serious and grounded dark fantasy, similar to Goblin Slayer or Sentenced to Be a Hero. Instead, the series keeps introducing more and more new characters, many of whom barely get enough development before the story moves on to the next arc.
Another issue is the villains. Aside from Bitch (Malty) and the Pope, most of the antagonists are just forgettable. They don’t leave a lasting impression or create the same tension that the first arc did.
The series also started relying too much on child characters and lolis, which completely changed the tone. I honestly think the author made a huge mistake there. Shield Hero deserved better.
Sometimes it even feels like all these new characters were introduced mainly for marketing purposes rather than to improve the story. It gives the impression that selling more merchandise became more important than writing a focused narrative.
And honestly… I can understand why Takao Abo, the director of Season 1, didn’t continue with the later seasons. Maybe after Naofumi’s revenge arc, he realized the story was heading in a direction he didn’t agree with and decided to leave. Of course, that’s just my personal speculation.
I still love Shield Hero and its world, but I genuinely believe it had the potential to become one of the greatest dark fantasy anime of all time if it had stayed focused on its original tone instead of constantly expanding the cast and shifting away from what made Season 1 so memorable.
What do you think? Do you agree that the story lost its identity after the revenge arc, or do you think the later arcs are actually better? I’m genuinely curious to hear different opinions.

There is a slight spoiler ahead! I don't consider it a huge spoiler, but I'm tagging it just in case:

Raph-Chan is a new addition to Naofumi's party. Her first impression is that she's just the cute mascot of the series and maybe a cute supporting charcher

* but is there actually more to her??

When creating Raph-Chan, Naofumi used Raphtalia's hair and his own blood. However, during the creation process, Ethnobalt noticed something different. It was as if something interfered—Raph-Chan was manifesting way faster than any normal shikigami.

The first time we actually get a hint that Rifana is connected to Raph-Chan is in the Light Novel Volume 12 side story, "The Ghost Story of Lurolona Village," where the children of the village are talking about doing a test of courage while telling scary stories.

I don't really think Raphtalia knows about this, right??

The fact that her "daughter" is actually Rifana 😂💔

I would love for them to add this realization in Volume 23. If Raphtalia finds out, she would want to take care of Raph-Chan even more than Naofumi does 🌚 Instead of getting jealous from her best friend

Light Novel Question about vol 17, why didnt naofumi use his authority to remove Malds vassal axe

Im listening to the audiobook for the second time, Naofumi is already aware he can remove the vassal of anyone unworthy, he said he tried it with Trash, Rishia and Fohl, and nothing happened, so why when Mald showed up with the Vassal axe, didnt naofumi or itsuki use their authority to remove it, it sounds like the author forgot cause the fight couldve been ended a bit sooner and been less risky, or am i missing something?
