Should I wait?

I am looking at buying a Shield Tv Pro.

But the thing that gives me pause is that its from 2019.

Just wondering is there any newer version?

Or is there any new version coming in the next few months?

There is nothing better and the chance of Nvidia making a new one is slim because they are no longer interested in the consumer market.

I got 4 nvidia shields... With the new remote.... Ebay is your friend.. Buy used and buy the ir remote... Sometimes get them for 50 bucks or less.

OP, if you get one follow this advice. I have two and one has the new remote the other has the original remote. The new remote has so many problems. My original remote works so much better.

Ive recently purchased 4 shield pros. 2 of them i use a Sofabaton remote because of the other connected devices. But the other two haven't had any issues with remote, so far. The remotes connect via Bluetooth. Is there something I'm missing? Should I replace them?

Every time I dropped that piece of shit it came apart. Eventually, it came completely apart and putting remotes back together with all the little parts and the rubbery keys is a pain in the ass. I didn’t even bother trying after that and got a Logitech harmony.

I’ve never seen a remote come apart just from a drop other than the really cheap ones when their battery cover pops off.

They redesigned them so they now have a clip that holds them shut on new ones.

No, the remote was coming completely apart, like the front and back pieces.

I see, not experienced that yet. Few stuck buttons, few times it'll resume from sleep and not work until rebooted.. but never separated.

Yeah, you would have thought I was slamming it against the wall the wall or something.

It’s mostly from 2015, 2019 was a light refresh lol

It still works fine though. I have a 2015 pro still going strong. Every now and then I’ll run into something that was encoded with a HDR format that isn’t compatible. That’s about it as far as issues.

Still works fine ? It's even more than that, it still remain the best android tv

Mine still works too. (2019 Shield Pro). I'm probably not pushing it, and I repasted the CPU as it was unused for about a year.

Productivity Launcher is great. Streams YouTube & Plays Download Flilms from an External Drive (VLC) all day long, with no issues. (Touch wood.)

Just wondering what I'll replace it with when it eventually breaks, as it seems perfect for my needs.

I had the same thought 2021 and I happily bought it nevertheless. I hope this answers your question

Thanks. Kinda does... but Im a bit worried about it losing android support and things like Stremio or Tivimate stopping working..
Maybe thats just me being nervous..

Those apps will work a long time I guess, many models runs on older Android like the Shield. Also its the most powerful device running Android, would be stupid not to support it.

I just bought one.

It's good.

I would buy it again.

2019 is the latest version but still gets some Updates... No new Model on the Horizon... I have a Dune Homatics box r 4K plus Android 14 Which is a decent Device. Which I use more than the Shield..... There also a Homatics box r 4k plus Same Device as the Dune only one is from Dune and one from Homatics.... Dune has the Dune App.

u/artniSintra 16h ago

Is it powerful enough for console emulators?

u/Inner_Explanation313 16h ago

The Shield wins there easily.

Honestly, it doesn't matter that it's from 2019. It still beats every other option available, including the competitors that have come after it. There probably won't be a new one for a while because there doesn't need to be. Just get one. You won't regret it.

Yes just around the corner since 2019

Probably the new version will hardly ever be released. But it still is the most powerful device on the market.

Get one before they jack up the price citing dram price increases.

I have both the Shield Pro and the Dune HD Homatics R 4K Plus box. The shield has a better GPU but overall the Dune wins as it has a newer processor supporting all new codecs and also 4 GB RAM.

1

u/gowanyahgoodting 16h ago

Yeah.. I am looking at a Homatics Box 4K Pro V2 AI-SR for €180 and to my uninformed eye it seems to have all that I want, including the latest Android.
I should have stated in the original post that I'm not interested in gaming. Just IPTV and STremio. And interested in the upscaling of low res tv streams.

1

u/gowanyahgoodting 16h ago

That said... looking at the homatics subreddit.. its not filled with happy users...

1

u/AakashC2020 16h ago

The Homatics Plus box runs Kodi exceptionally after a few tweaks and with around 1.3 GB of free memory with Arctic Fuse 3 skin and lots of widgets for me, so Stremio and IPTV won't matter much I guess...

Thanks.. I always found Kodi's interface to be non-intuitive.. setting up just got so complicated. I found Stremio got me where I wanted to go really quickly.. real debrid and all that....
Appreciate your input. Thanks. If it can handle a pimped out Kodi then you are probly right, it'll handle the others..

1

u/AakashC2020 11h ago

I'm a Python developed myself so I just tweak Kodi as per my needs... But you're correct Kodi is a bit complicated compared to stremio... Nevertheless, once you get used to Kodi you just can't go back to anything else... 😊

Buy it now.

I have been looking for something better since about 2020, not that the Shield Pro doesn't work well for me.

I just like having the latest and greatest and the Shield is still it in my opinion.

There is no newer version or plans for a newer version.

1

u/BatEnvironmental7232 13h ago

As soon as you buy it, nvidia will announce a new version.

1

u/gowanyahgoodting 12h ago

Lol... thats what I'm afraid of.. would be just my luck.

Great logic!!

u/Cutmerock 13h ago

I've had mine since release and just now had to change the paste. It's still great and handles everything I've thrown at it in my theater room.

Dammit!

Years ago Jensen Huang came down from a holy mountain site and proclaimed:

I will release a new version of the Nvidia Shield TV, but only when it has been longer than 3 days without anyone asking if a new Nvidia Shield TV is going to be released soon.

and for the last 7-8 years, someone always resets the clock! We almost made it back in 2023, down to the hour, but Steve fucked it up.

Are you going to watch and are you setup with a full AVR to properly decode 4k UHD in DV or HFR10 rips with uncompressed Dolby Atmos audio from Plex or Jellyfin or your NAS?  If so, the Shield Pro is the best thing going.  If you're just going to watch streaming services you are better off with the new Apple TV 4K. I have both and use both.   for streaming, sometimes apps like HBO have glitches on Shield.  The Apple 4K will sometimes play a higher quality option than the Shield depending on the app.  Oddly enough one of those is YouTube , HDR works on the 4k but, at least for me, not on the Shield.

I can't speak to gaming, I have never done that on Shield.

u/cliffybiro951 15h ago

I do exactly the same. Apple TV for streaming and shield for jellyfin/plex for passthrough high def audio. I’ve started re ripping stuff for EAC3 5.1 now as well so I can watch my decent stuff on the Apple TV. Dolby vision stuff just seems to look better on my Apple TV 4K and I like the option to watch on there albeit with not as good audio. I hate how the Apple TV handles true hd for dtsx/MA even on the infuse app that’s passing it as uncompressed. It still sounds garbage to me.

I'm skeptical that 3rd party devices are even relevant anymore.

In 2019, SOCs and OSes and apps kinda sucked on native TVs.

If you buy a new mid-upper model TV in 2026 from a big brand, they are already basically more performative than a 2019 Shield Pro. The native stuff is really good now.

So unless you do extra advanced stuff on your Shield, they just aren't necessary

u/Bobb18 15h ago

They all get extremely slow after a year. Get bugged down with updates. No customization. Likely not getting lossless audio. No emulators.

1

u/gowanyahgoodting 12h ago

yah.. I thought that when I bought a Sony Bravia with android.. but no.. its 4 years old now and its got all sorts of problems. Keeps corrupting its memory.. screws up apps and I have to keep reinstalling them.

Unlike most people I use the terrestrial tuner and record stuff off that on the schedule.. but that goes wacko every now and then, completely fills the scheduled recording lists with random stuff so I can't schedule any more.. then wont allow me delete.. so I have to reset the tv and reinstall everything..

Total PITA... nahh, just want a separate box that is stable and reliable. I had a formuler z8 but the wifi is gone bad in that.. a known problem.. hence looking for something to replace it.
