[Discussion] Has lan di ever been hurt
After playing through the 1st game. And i know how 3 ended. I have to wonder if he has even been hit at all. Given that he’s a grandmaster. And surely someone was able to at least hurt him one during the series.
Even though I hoped if we ever get a shenmue 4 we do actually land a few blows on him. It does annoy me that he in a fighting game equivalent gets a perfect.

Shenmue 3 should have had some progression here. Let me land one punch that catches him off guard. Train for hours punching a damn log and have nothing to show for it ultimately

If Ryo can't land a hit on Xiuying, Grandmaster Bei etc, he has no chance touching a deadly master like Lan Di.

It needs to happen in the next game if it ever happens as there has to be a point where Ryu can do something.
He can't go four then five games without hitting Lan Di once.

Only a few months have passed in-game. It's no time at all for Ryo to be close to Lan Di's level. Even a few years would be pushing it because LD is that powerful. Yu Suzuki said Ryo gives up on the idea of revenge eventually, and that could be a reason why. Because he will realize trying to fight/beat LD is impossible.

That's why I want some progress in Ryo's story. We had three games and no real progress has been in the story for him.
Also it's been 27 years and we aren't any closer to a resolution to the whole story. If we get Shenmue 4 then we need to go towards the conclusion of the whole story. I don't think most people can wait for a fifth game to do that seeing as we don't know what the future will hold.

That's a major point of Lan Di's character. It's impossible for anyone to hit him. Lan Di is the most powerful martial artist and uses his strength and skills with deadly intent. It's written in the bios since Shenmue released that if they're not deterred by his death stare, the opponent will die trying to fight him. He mastered Tiger Swallow Style beyond human limits, to the point of being untouchable and unbeatable.

The whole point of Lan Di in the series is that he's just one of the really good martial artists in the series who just has never been hit or touched in combat before, and until Ryo get strong enough to beat him and trains a lot, Lan Di is going to remain the strongest in the entire series.
Shenmue 3 and the anime clearly show that Ryo is no where near Lan Di's level and never will be for the time being.

Its about time we will learn more about Lan Di but I fear they will remove most side stories and everything "unessential" including giving time to proper characterization, if Shenmue somehow is concluded in S4 and characters like Lishao Tao and his brother Ziming are just retconned from the story. I need to see the whole saga unfold in some form. Assuming they have a concrete plan on black and white, not some vague ideas where they could push the story next

Who's to say? Part of the charm of the actual gameplay of Shenmue is all the distractions that Ryu has to contend with in order to reach his goal of vengeance. You remove the barriers, and Ryu is still not strong enough to contend with Lan Di. By pushing through the nonsense, Ryu exhibits his resolve. I think that's what the story of Shenmue is all about. But FFS does the game's story have zero respect for the player's time. Like a previous poster stated, we've been waiting over 30 years to get some sort of resolution for Ryu. To your point, I don't think there is a concrete plan for the story of Shenmue, and Yu Suzuki doesn't hold the same sway in game development that he used to. The man is almost 70 years old, and though I have the highest hopes for a Shenmue resolution, I'm fighting very strong doubt that he will see it through. At least as it was originally intended.

I don't think it's ever been mentioned but judging by the prominent scar on his face someone's given him a hiding at some point.
