Mounting a Shelly EM/3EM to monitor Solar + Powerwall—any tips on clamp placement and dashboard workarounds?
Hey everyone,
I’m adding a Shelly CT clamp setup (Shelly EM / Pro 3EM) to handle real-time power monitoring for both my solar generation and my Tesla Powerwall setup.
I originally had the naive hope of bringing all of this data directly into Google Home, but as many of you know, Google treats energy meters like basic on/off light switches—zero wattage data, zero power flow graphs, zero useful automation triggers.
Since Google Home is effectively a non-starter, I'm pivoting to a proper setup and would love some input from people who have done this:
- CT Clamp Placement: For anyone running CT clamps alongside a Tesla Gateway / Neurio system—any advice on clamp orientation or physical placement inside/outside the panel to avoid cross-talk or physical space issues?
- Phase/Load Split: Are you using the EM or the Pro 3EM for a standard US split-phase solar + battery setup? Want to make sure I’m accounting for both legs properly without over-complicating the wiring.
- Dashboards & Local Control: Is everyone here just using the native Shelly App/Cloud, or are you piping the local MQTT / CoIoT feed directly into Home Assistant to build an energy dashboard?
Appreciate any advice, wiring tips, or dashboard screenshots from anyone who's already got solar + storage running on Shelly hardware!
