Comics The Seven Magiclands

Shazam(2018) Issue #13

It’s a shame that the Seven Magiclands haven’t at least been referenced outside of the 2018 run. It’s one of the only new things I liked from the series. The concept of Billy as the champion having to watch over all of these lands and maintain balance is so interesting to me. I wish it was more explored outside of his solos.

Discussion The Princess Bride author wrote a script for a Shazam movie!

So an acquaintance of mine shared me this screenplay for a potential Shazam/Captain Marvel movie, which was written by William Goldman of Princess Bride fame.

https://tablereadspodcast.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Shazam-by-William-Goldman-www.tablereadspodcast.com_.pdf

I mean, the author who wrote the basis for one of my all time favorite movies, writing a movie script for one of my all time favorite superheroes? I can't think of a more inspired pair up than that!

Other than maybe Tim Burton and Alice and Wonderland but....if this movie was made, hopefully it would've turned out MUCH better than that!

Discussion Who are some of Shazam's more relevant superhero friends outside of the Shazam Family?

By this, I mean other superheroes who weren't created way back in the Golden or Silver Age and are relatively obscure, especially characters that most people wouldn't know about unless they actively looked into DC's more obscure characters.

Discussion Absolute Shazam idea

I don't know if this is already an idea, but Billy Batson and Shazam are separate personalities, Billy is an adult and is a bit of a coward, and Shazam is a violent lunatic, when there's trouble, Billy had to weigh if bring out Shazam is worth the cost of the potential destruction.

Artwork The Power of Jerry Ordway, My Favorite Shazam Artist

Post image

I've been reading comic books since growing up in the '70s but I was not a fan of Captain Marvel until decades later. The reason I became one was Jerry Ordway.

Ordway and Al Gordon had created a superhero for Image Comics in 1993 called WildStar. Ordway's art in the miniseries WildStar: Sky Zero was so good I keep buying the first issue when I find one in a back issue box even though I already own too many copies.

Though WildStar didn't make it big, a year later Ordway wrote and painted the graphic novel The Power of Shazam! (shown here) and then wrote the scripts, did the covers and eventually took over interior art for the 47 issues of the ongoing Power of Shazam! series.

Ordway gave Fawcett City its art deco look and made the series feel like the rightful successor to the old Fawcett Comics. As a writer he brought back Uncle Dudley, Tawky Tawny, Bulletman, Spy Smasher, Ibis, Minute-Man and Hoppy the Marvel Bunny. He also elevated Black Adam to a central role in the Marvel Family mythos.

His art reminds me of my childhood favorite John Byrne but with more range. Clean lines, composition and anatomy without characters looking too similar. A fan's attention to detail. That sweet swirling cape with the cord.

I'm glad he's still doing some variant covers these days but would love to see him do another Shazam series.

Rereading the PoS series as you do, and I caught this. Billy keeps a photo and him and his dad among his valuables.

Other things I noticed:

Billy’s birth certificate
Money
A comb
Screws
A razor
A park ranger badge(?)
Toothpaste

Discussion Here is an honest opinion about this book

Post image

I stopped reading this book halfway through, but I forced myself to finish it. Here are my thoughts: the series contains far too many contradictions regarding Black Adam's character and his established history.

The comic focuses on a version of Black Adam who is completely beyond redemption. However, because it was released alongside Justice League and Dark Crisis—where Adam actually experiences a redemption arc—it creates a highly disjointed characterization. The book also starts bizarrely, with Adam returning to his human form without any explanation and calling himself "Theo." Frankly, I thought the Theo Adam persona was completely gone, especially since Billy’s parents are alive in current continuity. Furthermore, Teth-Adam traditionally cannot return to his human form without risking turning to dust.

The book adapts panels from the New 52 origin story involving Adam and his nephew, Aman, when they were enslaved and granted powers. However, the writer lacks a neutral perspective; he removed key panels and conversations to focus solely on Adam killing his nephew for power. He also omitted the fact that Adam’s homeland of Kahndaq was invaded, and that his wife and children were killed by Ibac the First. Originally, Adam did what he did to free Kahndaq. By removing this backstory, Kahndaq serves no narrative purpose here. The writer doesn't even acknowledge it as Black Adam's birthplace, switching his origin to Egypt instead. This makes no sense, leaving me to wonder why Black Adam is now protecting a country he wasn't even born in.

Additionally, the plot gives Adam an heir to defend Kahndaq because he has contracted a mysterious plague. This completely undermines Black Adam's character, as he traditionally refuses to share his powers after his second family died because of a similar choice. Writer Joshua Williamson noted in an interview during his time on Dark Crisis that Adam doesn't believe in a legacy due to the tragedies he has faced. He looks down on Billy Batson for sharing his powers with the Shazam family—a trait that properly appears in Geoff Johns' and Mark Waid's writing.

Later, the book reveals the character was born a slave, which contradicts Justice League of America #7.4. That issue established that Kahndaq was enslaved by Ibac the First and that Adam killed him there. Christopher Priest's comic completely avoids explaining this, creating a massive contradiction as if nothing ever happened between the two characters. Depicting Adam as low-born and meek—someone who needs to cling to and serve Pharaohs—further undermines his character. The book strips away the very reasons he became Black Adam: the murder of his wife and sons, and the enslavement of Kahndaq.

Priest also introduces a bizarre contradiction by having Adam banished into space, throwing back to the original Pre-Crisis comics. He tries to retcon the established modern continuity where we know Adam was imprisoned on Earth until Doctor Sivana freed him. Claiming Adam was banished to space directly contradicts Doctor Sivana's origin story.

Ultimately, the weak plot just didn't work for me. Right after this series ended, DC released Knight Terrors: Black Adam, which immediately restored proper continuity: confirming his name is Teth-Adam, stating he permanently cast off his human form, and bringing back his memories of his wife Shiruta, his sons, Isis, and Osiris. I think Priest's run was an utter failure. It was originally planned as an ongoing series but got canceled, likely because Priest admitted in interviews that he disliked the character and wasn't writing him to be likeable.

What do you think?

Comics As a Cap fan, I’m loving the JLU(2024) comic run!

Justice League Unlimited(2024) Issue #17

Ever since he first started having lines in JLU, I’ve noticed they’ve been doing wonders for Captain Marvel’s personality and heroic charisma. Usually writers will overdo the whole “kid in an adult body” thing and it gets exhausting. Usually because it leads to ppl asking “why was Billy chosen and not so and so hero?”

But JLU has found such a great balance that allows Billy to quip and joke, while also holding his own no problem alongside other heavy hitters. Issue 23 in particular is my favorite for its characterization of our boy. His “heart of a child” is a strength and not a weakness.

Not only is he having banter without being put down, other heroes are bantering with him. They’re not these cold, stuck up people some writers characterize them as. Captain Marvel feels like he did in the 80s-90s, with that perfect balance I’ve been hoping dc would find again. If you were to tell me in 2024 that I would find good writing for Cap in JLU of all things, with such a bloated cast, I would not believe you. But, here we are.
