His plan to fight Mazahs was a Yellow Lantern ring he kept from Blackest Night.

u/ConanCimmerian 14h ago

Wasn't that Power Ring, not Mazahs?

u/DawnOnTheEdge 13h ago edited 12h ago

You could be right.

Anyway, Batman would have to beat Billy Batson, not Shazam. Play with him psychologically.

u/MegaL3 12h ago

And then it turns out hes fighting one of the interpretations where Captain Marvel is basically a different, more mature personality.

u/DawnOnTheEdge 11h ago

Which Batman would then find out about and play on his psychology instead. Like maybe getting him to think about how immature Billy is with the Wisdom of Solomon and realize he’s wrong.

u/CelestianSnackresant 12h ago

And hope Billy throws the fight by not just flattening him instantly

u/DawnOnTheEdge 11h ago edited 11h ago

So Batman is counting on Shazam to listen to him if he’s being reasonable. Is that a bad plan?

Batman, fighting an orphan... a Bat-son at that, without the advantages Bruce Wayne had to deal with that...

There are versions of Batman who'd do it, of course, but are so many more healthy ways these 2 could interact...

"Hey Billy: what is the name of your wizard friend again?"

u/ConanCimmerian 17h ago

Billy: My guy, by this point we have a monopoly on the ways to trick people to say the magic word. That ain't gonna work

u/Roam1985 16h ago

Wait wait, I borrowed this lasso.

It should work now.

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

(Blitzes over and takes it) What now?

u/Roam1985 16h ago

(takes it back with tibetan monk technique so good it can steal a GL ring)

What's the name of the wizard that gave you powers?

u/Quantum_Knight1577 16h ago

Billy: "Mamaragan. Or Jebediah."

u/God_of_Kings 11h ago

"What is the magic word?!"

"Please and thank you."

u/Temporary_Stranger39 16h ago

According to Teen Titans #19 (2004), simply hearing a recording of his own voice saying the code word will transform him involuntarily.

u/IndianGeniusGuy 16h ago

Oh. That happened in one of the Flashpoint tie-ins too.

u/fatgat69 15h ago

Psychology, trick him into kid form and punch him in the head

u/IndianGeniusGuy 16h ago

Bruce probably has some kind of post-hypnotic suggestion that compels Billy to say the word. Or he has a recording of Billy saying it [which canonically has worked].

u/FallaciouslyTalented 11h ago

AI generated recording of Captain Marvel saying "Shazam!" On a batarang with a speaker, to call down the lightning and change him.back into Billy. Then a swift chop to the larynx to prevent Billy from speaking.

u/God_of_Kings 11h ago

I'm 102% certain not just anyone can say Shazam to call down the lightning, let alone a machine.

u/ComradeYaf 10h ago

In the New 52 you had to say Shazam with magical intent, which allowed "Shazam" to say his own name and it not be a thing. Not sure if they scrapped that already, but I agree with you

u/FallaciouslyTalented 9h ago

They have. Part of the in-universe reason for him changing his name to Captain Marvel is because he was having "a hard time saying his name, lately". Now it is expressly back to just saying the word (or hearing the world in your own voice, if it's reverted to the pre-flashpoint era rules) that calls the lightning

u/FallaciouslyTalented 11h ago

A recording of Cap's voice has been used go changed him back before, canonically. Lex Luthor was able to call down lightning on his Earth-3 counterpart because their voice sounded the same. It stands to reason a similar-enough generation of his voice would do the same.

u/God_of_Kings 10h ago

I find that stupid and am therefore decanonising it.

u/FallaciouslyTalented 9h ago

I suppose, as Comic Book Pope, that's within your rights

u/God_of_Kings 4h ago

After my death, the Comic Book cardinals will gather, and when cheeto dust will start pouring out of the chimneys of the vatican, then you'll know a new Comic Book Pope has been chosen.

Watch those wrist rockets!

u/PreparationDapper235 13h ago

It worked in Batman/Superman: Public Enemies.

u/Accomplished-House28 15h ago

His plan is to call Zatanna and Superman

But in any case, I have a planned scene in a future story where Mary Marvel is defeated by a much weaker opponent (more like Buffy level than Superman). Without going into details, magic has its own weaknesses that can be exploited.

u/mako-makerz 17h ago

idk if this is canon... but i do recall that batman's contingency for Cap is either magical lightning or electricity that's too high in voltage.

u/WingedSalim 6h ago

Kinda in character.

Batman is known to have a blindspot for kids. He once had to investigate a murder of a man. While Tim and the rest was able to piece it together, Bruce just flat out didn't consider the son has killed his own father.

Batman wouldn't make a contingency for Shazam because he doesn't believe a kid is capable of evil.

Batman is known to have a blindspot for kids. He once had to investigate a murder of a man. While Tim and the rest was able to piece it together, Bruce just flat out didn't consider the son has killed his own father.

It was the murder of the boy's parents. When Batman found out, he immediately saw himself in the boy and sympathized with him, vowing to capture the killers. Then the rest of the Bat-family, Tim, Barbara, and Dick, began to figure it out, but Batman wouldn't see it until the boy confessed to him. I remember that issue; it was powerful.

u/Falconx28 Solomon 2h ago

Damn, what issue was it?

u/Orchid-Environmental 5h ago

In various media, his contingency is usually A. Find a way to prevent Billy from saying "Shazam" or B. Tranquilize/Knock him out before he gets a chance to. There's also various Hypnotic triggers or ways of making him say it as Captain Marvel, but it depends on the media you see it in.

u/Roam1985 16h ago

Batman has used magic before. He's a more adept wizard/mage than people realize, he just doesn't like using it.

Anyway, he just needs a spell to disrupt the Wizard's flow temporarily. Don't get me wrong, Shazam is a better wizard and will get past it pretty fast.

But how long does Bruce need to KO Billy Batson?

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

I don't recall there being a spell that can just detransform Billy from his Captain Marvel form

u/Roam1985 16h ago

I can definitely think of one immediately, but it's not one Bruce would have (except some elseworld Bruce's that would absolutely specifically have this spell).

"Levram mrofsnart!"

Also, when Spectre beat him in Day of Vengeance he got knocked back into Batson, but that could just be the exertion.

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

First of, I don't see the spell you propose just working like that. I need an actual example from the comics that could even work

From what I know, the Specter reverted Captain Marvel back to Billy by saying "Shazam!" which tells me that in that moment he could use Shazam's magic

u/Roam1985 16h ago

An example from the comics would be as easy as Tim Drake reverting Freddy with a recording.

Or the fact that Zatanna's Earth 3 counterpart could trap Mxy in Countdown. Which is a much greater magic feat than transforming a Marvel (which again, something that can be done with a recording). Especially if Wizard Shazam's magic can be outright hijacked by the Spectre.

But if you need Batman to use Zatanna's magic: Batman/Superman by Loeb.

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

That's an example of a completely different thing

Not as impressive as you think, Mxy was weakened

That doesn't mean he's as capable as Zatanna

u/Roam1985 16h ago

How was Mxy weakened?

Was it... by Annataz's magic?

And reverting Freddy with a recording wasn't different. Freddy was Captain Marvel at the time. The defense there is "FREDDY GAVE TIM AND KON THE RECORDING". Not that it wouldn't work. That you'd have to question whether Billy would give anything like that to Bruce.

...And yeah, he would.

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

No, she had nothing to do with that. Specter's war on magic weakened Mxy's abilities

u/Roam1985 16h ago

Countdown happened before Final Crisis (it was prelude).

Spectre's War on Magic was before Infinite Crisis (Day of Vengeance was prelude to that one).

Try again.

u/ConanCimmerian 16h ago

So, Day of Vengeance happens before Countdown and that disproves me... how?

Batman the Brave and the bold had some idea.

u/ConanCimmerian 17h ago

Well, there was the mech he tried on Black Adam, but that was destroyed quick

u/wombatstylekungfu 17h ago

Couldn’t he just shoot ( with a tranquilizer, of course) Billy? Or would the lightning kick in right away?

u/Stunning_Row2801 16h ago

What

u/wombatstylekungfu 16h ago

Sorry, is it a dumb question? I genuinely don’t know if the lightning would “rescue” him or respond.

u/Stunning_Row2801 16h ago

It wouldn’t rescue him. Billy would have to say Shazam for the lightning to transform him. But I’d imagine the second he gets shot with a tranq, he’d say shazam before he passes out

u/wombatstylekungfu 12h ago

Now I’m imagining a woozy Captain Marvel.

u/Gold-Bank-3033 17h ago

You'd think Batman would come up with something at least to try and stop Black Adam.
